Stepping into Hotel Posada de Don Rodrigo was like taking a journey back to the early days of the Spanish colonial city in Guatemala. The doors, ceilings, courtyard, floors, and decor capture that time to make staying at the hotel like living in a museum. The hotel is lovingly restored and maintained. My favorite room was the restaurant with a spectacular intricate carved wood ceiling painted green and other colors. There's a wonderful old fountain on one wall. In the mornings and evenings, a band plays Spanish music. At night, dancers in costumes perform as well. The room, performers and excellent food and drinks make a visit to the restaurant a don't miss event. When we came back to Antigua a second time before our flight out, we decided to go back to the restaurant for dinner again because we loved it so much. We especially enjoyed the beef tenderloin and sangria. The courtyard is lush and green, with a series of colorful paintings set on easels capturing various sites, and flora and fauna of Guatemala. Flowering plants and the chirping of birds add to the ambiance making for a romantic and charming setting. The rooms line the courtyard with eclectic sitting areas with furniture consistent with the colonial era. There are large pottery urns sprinkled throughout providing water for drinking. The contrast between the hectic street right outside of the hotel, smack in the middle of all of the action, and the serene open hallways and courtyard is striking. We were a bit disappointed our room was very small with just a standard double bed. My husband is 6 foot 6 and it was snug. The only window was a hinged opening in the heavy dark wood antique door out to the courtyard. There was no safe in the room which concerned us because we didn't want to carry all of our cash with us. We ended up hiding money in the room. I suspect we didn't need to work so hard to hide it because when we left money out to tip the people who made up our room, they didn't take it. This happened in other hotels in Guatemala as well. There's security at the front door and the staff members were all warm, friendly, eager to assist, and competent. We didn't expect air-conditioning, and there wasn't any. During the day, the room did get a bit warm and stuffy, but by evening, it cooled off enough to be comfortable. Despite the hotel's age, it was spotless and well-maintained. We ended up staying in three different hotels in Antigua during our trip. This one was my favorite, despite the small room, because the attention to every detail was so thorough. It is an unforgettable place and among the highlights of our trip.

Courtyard is pretty. We found our room to be very basic ( no charm); thought the bed was comfortable & room clean. Our room had cheap carpeting ( some rooms have title floors). Not enough towels & those we had were quite thin & no washcloths. They had those huge old fashioned keys that were really difficult to use ( suggest they change to something more modern & easier ). We were with a group & had dinner which was ok; nothing special. Unfortunately the entertainment was in another room which was a shame. They offer filtered water throughout hotel & two bottles in room which was nice. Best part: Great location! We only stayed for one night which was enough.

This hotel is charming in an old historic building with beautiful courtyards flowers and a friendly helpful staff. The reason I can’t give it any more stars is the bed was very hard and I had trouble sleeping every night, and the room was not clean enough. I asked for a fan and they gave me one and it was black with dirt and dust. When I cleaned the curtain rod in preparation for my laundry that also came up black. Whenever I walked barefoot across the room my feet got dirty. The breakfast was decent with minimal choices as I was on a tour and it was included.

Excellent food, service and location. The premises are absolutely fabulous and the service excellent with show included. The traditional dances and dresses they all wear are exquisite. I loved all if it.

We went for breakfast our first morning in Antigua. The hotel is very beautiful ( has a nice garden in the main entrance). The service was top 10/10. They had live music. The food was good (we ordered the Guatemala breakfast with fresh fruit juice). Definitely we will go back. Highly recommend it.

Everything at thus hotel was superb. The room, the ambiance, the location, the interior multiple gardens and balconies. Buttge best part was the kind and attentive service and help of all the staff, starting with the office staff with daily greetings and the restaurant staff. Don't miss the wonderful breakfast selections. Even though the small city has so many good restaurants, I had breakfast here each day and two other meals during my five day stay.

This is an old hotel with great character and atmosphere. In the centre of Antigua, it is an ideal base to experience the town. The rooms have lots of character and the food is very good. On the evening we were there there was also entertainment in the restaurant. However the WiFi was poor. This hotel is highly recommended due to its history and setting

I stayed here 5 nights. Rooms in this hotel are very different depending on their location in the hotel. The first 2 nights I stayed in two different rooms in the same area where there is a smaller courtyard. These rooms were dark, moisty, and smelly. Beds were hard like a rock. I was also itchy and then I noticed there were small red ants in the room. I could not sleep at night. Wi-Fi connection in these rooms was poor. Per my request, they moved me to a room that was located in the courtyard located just when you enter the hotel. That room was larger and brighter, as it had two windows. It was not as moisty. However, bed in this room was still as hard as in other rooms. Also, walls were very thin, and I could hear all the noises coming from the neighboring room. This hotel has a good location. However, I stayed in much better hotels in Antigua that also have a great location. I recommend not to pay the rate that includes breakfast. The price difference is significant. They don’t explain it to you but... If breakfast is included in your rate, then you have only about 7 different choices on menus that are not good and not worth what you pay. These choices do not include bacon or sausage. If you want a slice of bacon or a piece of sausage, you will be asked to pay extra. The breakfast that I order was not tasty. It included scrambled eggs, piece of bread, and a small cup of weak coffee. There was only space left for me to sit inside the restaurant The tables outside were occupied. The restaurant was dark, moisty, messy, and unappealing. Immediately I asked to switch to charge me a rate that do not include breakfast. The difference was about $20 per night. You will be able to get a great breakfast for less in restaurants located close to the hotel. You will even have a choice to try different restaurants each day of your stay. To summarize, I do not recommend staying here. You can find way better and less expensive hotels in Antigua. Most rooms in this hotel are dark, moisty, and smelly. Some rooms have small red ants and you’ll be itchy. Wi-Fi connection can be very poor inside the rooms. Beds are hard as a rock; you will not be able to sleep. Rooms have thin walls and you’ll be able to hear guests in the neighboring rooms. Breakfast included in the room rate is poor and overpriced. You can find better hotels with great location in Antigua.

BUGS!!!!! I was itching for first two nights but could not see anything around the bed or the room. Noon of the second day I actually found very small red ants in the bathroom as well as in the bed. I complained to the reception and requested to speak to the manager. Their English was pretty bad and unfortunately they were completely powerless and could not even contact or find the manager on duty. I could not speak to a person of authority till my departure next morning at 6:45am. They said they would move my room and not to worry that they would be get all bugs killed. I had to get all my clothes washed at an outside facility; returned to the new room at night and same thing; more bugs bit me that night. I requested an apology and a refund next morning, neither of which they provided, and I saw an exterminator enter the hotel around 6:30am, 18 hours after the incident was reported. It took their manager Rogelio Jolom to get back to me two weeks and several emails. She simply said apologies but they were not responsible for any of this since they changed my room the last night of my stay!!!!! I am very saddened this ruined my great trip to beautiful Guatemala. More than anything lack of customer focus and non responsiveness is the issue. I will continue seeking a refund.
