Located not far from Kasane airport, a car is needed as it is a little way from Kasane central. Rooms spacious and breakfast lovely. Amazing staff across the board. Free wifi and run by a lovely lady by the name of Lindy, very helpful. Rooms airy an spacious, do remember not to leave the porch light on at night, our first night we arrived back from dining in Kasane central to a veritable plethora of insects on the porch of our bungalow and one very big bug on the wall inside which took a lot of encouragement to vacate the property. Lesson learned! Tours can be booked from the Lodge. Very nice to be able to sit outside by the pool and bar and see the children playing by the river. A klaxon is in the room so that in the unlikely event that a croc breaches the electric fencing you can summon help. A 24 hour guard is on hand. We loved our time here and highly recommend it.

Nice little lodge, with great location on the Chobe river. Sit down on the shore in the evening and watch the sunset (you can see it only partially), just wonderful ! Quiet and peaceful. Owner very helpful. We had a big family room. Food very, very, yummy. At lunchtime a free lunch is provided. Unbelievable, they should demand money for it ! Really ! In addition, all day muffins are available, the best I have eaten in my life ! Game Drives in the Chobe Game Reserve or boatcruises are offered through third parties.

Don’t get me wrong. The property is beautiful. Tha facilities are clean and quiet. The river view is impacted by all the trees but it’s ok. The ladies who work there are amazing. The cooks and the reception staff - can’t fault them. The food was great but at a price and no choice as it’s set three course menu every day. I don’t eat that much but it’s 200 no matter what you have it don’t have. I’m sure many people would love it here - but only if they are clueless about Africa. The play on the fear of tourists. I drive my own 4x4 and know Botswana very well: I am also a guide. They have one guide who is not well trained and tells the most ridiculous incorrect facts about the animals he encounters. That I can forgive but telling people that a hippo has to stay in the water because it’s legs can’t support them - foolish. These guests could get themselves killed by walking up to a hippo to take a picture thinking they have nothing to worry about (I’m typing this from St Lucia where someone was killed by a hippo in the last few days). He also went awol with the security guard in the mornings. Blocked the open gate so I couldn’t get out on the game drive then was nowhere to be found. Did this two mornings in a row so maybe he was having fun with the security guard and lost track of time. Made me laugh because the guests didn’t like the gate being left open and unattended. I just wanted to go on my drive in my car. So to conclude - this place is great if you want to hide in a lodge scared to explore and have no clue how to fend for yourself and no clue about Africa. And if you want to pay too much for food and be forced to sit with strangers every time you eat then this is for you (not good if you are a couple who want a nice getaway). They are offended if you want to do things yourself it seems and then make comments about how you won’t see anything without them (again funny as I was at every sighting before you and you missed a few bud 🙂. ) There was a Dutch couple that said they had come from Tanzania and found the same - they treat you like idiots. If you are an educated wildlife person or guide,or live in life SA and camp etc, this ain’t for you! So yeah nice rooms, but felt like a prison in the most part - cancelled some river activities and went to another lodge I know and booked through them, wanted them to have my money rather. I will revert to camping in future, what was I thinking!

Dear Shaz, Many thanks indeed for the review and more importantly, congratulations on becoming a TripAdvisor member so that you could post your very first review ever. We are honoured by the effort made in order to post a review as it shows us that even 6 weeks after your departure, you are still reminiscing about your time spent at River View Lodge. To say the least, I am perplexed by your review given the amount of interaction I had with you during your stay with us. Whilst you did raise a concern about a factual error made by our in-house guide, you did not mention all your other complaints to me in our numerous discussions. I would also say that the actual documented issues in your review do not necessarily lend to a 2 out of 5 stars – perhaps you clicked “post” before you had a chance to click on a few more stars, or maybe not. As a lodge manager, it is always intimidating when a client arrives with an unannounced professional accreditation in a field within where one operates, in my case in a wildlife area being Chobe, Botswana. On first sight of your Jeep Wrangler, kitted out to the hilt and with “Beware Poisonous Snakes” decals placed on the doors, bonnet and rear of the vehicle, I knew that a Herpetologist had arrived at the lodge, but little did I know until my first verbal encounter with you that you are in fact also a highly qualified, experienced and decorated safari guide and bush enthusiast in most Southern African National Parks and wildlife areas. With regard to your review, thank you most humbly for the accolades regarding the beauty of our surroundings as well as the cleanliness of the facility and our amazing staff complement. On that note, sadly there are a few concerns that you have documented, which I shall address individually. The cost of the meals and a set 3-course menu – we rotate a 5-day menu as the majority of our guests never stay longer that 5 days. Each of the 5 menus is different, offering 2 choices for starters, 2 choices for main course and a dessert. We do also offer three additional meals, included in our standard rates; early morning pre-activity snack, elaborate brunch on return from the morning activity and then a pre-afternoon activity “safari snack” similar to High Tea but with a name more conducive to Africa. In a nut shell, all guests are offered 3 meals on a complimentary basis, separate to our dinner offering. We are not and do not pretend to be a 5-star property, and price our services and offerings accordingly, closely benchmarking against similarly competitive properties in the market. As a point of reference and comparison, the cost of a main course only at competitive properties within the market is within the region of P85 – P115. That said, we are comfortable with the pricing of our three-course offering. Whilst it is not mandatory, we do encourage our guests to join one another at dinner in an informal seating arrangement so as to facilitate the sharing of travel stories and interact with each other, and in numerous cases, travel advice is received and new destinations are added to the list. The majority of our guests enjoy the fact that all guests dine together, and in your case, had you not dined with the Dutch couple that you mentioned in your review, you would never have known that in Tanzania, the lodges treat guests like idiots. Lesson learned, I guess. With regard to our front gate being blocked/locked/closed by a member of staff, which as a result denied you the ability to leave the premises on your self-drive, early morning safari – I find this very strange as we do have a motorized front gate/entrance and all guests who are on a self-drive basis are given a gate remote for the duration of their stay so that they can enter and leave the property at liberty. I did check our internal gate remote register and see that you were indeed handed a gate remote. Our in-house professional guide, Mathews, is qualified and licenced in accordance with the requirements established and controlled by the Department of Wildlife & National Parks (DWNP). We only ever receive brilliant comments about his etiquette, professionalism, knowledge and patience in ensuring that most guests can return home having seen as much wildlife as possible and securing the “return to Botswana photo”. As mentioned earlier, you are a professional guide yourself and you took the liberty to tell me as much, and you also told me that Mathews told the occupants on the boat cruise that Hippos do not stay out of the water for very long as their short legs cannot support their heavy frames. I reassured you that there are certain “tongue in cheek” comments that all safari guides make and that it was merely a means of introducing some humour into the boat cruise. I did question Mathews in your presence when he returned for duty later on and he confirmed this sharing of humour, and assured me that he also communicated the real reason why Hippos do not spend much time out of the water especially during the day – the lack of sweat glands and the risk of dehydration. The story about short legs on Hippos is similar to how guides in this region refer to Guinea Fowls as Chobe Chickens and Zebras as striped horses etc – all in jest. In conclusion, I am very happy that you and your partner enjoyed certain aspects of your River View Lodge experience although I am saddened that you felt like a prisoner and wanted to do more self-drive safaris and were not happy with our professional guide’s ability and as a result, cancelled some river cruises and went with another operator. Many of the guests who stay with us are on self-drive holidays and prefer to venture into the park on their own, which is why we offer an array of board bases including Bed & Breakfast only, to cater for those guests who wish to do their own ‘activities’. But as they say – “You can please some of the people some of the time but you cannot please all of the people all of the time”. I am humbled that you close off your review by announcing that you shall revert to camping in the future as you mentioned to me that you normally camp but decided to spoil yourselves on this trip and stay in lodge accommodation. As it was basically the guide’s ability and feeling like a prisoner that irked you, River View Lodge as a lodge itself ticked all the boxes and that is what counts. Please do let us know if you would like to extend your services and assist the Department of Wildlife & National Parks in Botswana in an effort to ensure that the country’s guides are of the best on the continent and we will put you in touch with the relevant authorities. Happy camping and beware of the snakes. Regards, Mike

Spacious room; nice breakfast; so-so dinners; small pool ; helpful staff; nice river bank ambiance, curiously lacking in passing wild life. Anyway, we were there to visit Chobe, and the hotel organised morning game drive, and afternoon cruise were excellent;and the guide ,Matthew, was first class. Recommended.

Many thanks for taking the time to write us a review. We are delighted you enjoyed the ambience and facilities of our lodge and felt well looked after by our team, although we are disappointed to learn that our dinners did not quite meet your expectations. We usually receive glowing feedback about all our meals, and will certainly look into what may have gone wrong during your stay with us. We are very fortunate to be located on the banks of the Chobe River and often have hippos, crocodiles, bush bucks and warthogs passing by, not to mention a band of mischievous mongooses that frequent the lodge on an almost daily basis. It is a pity you didn’t get to see any of these visitors during your stay with us, although being that they are wild it is unfortunately impossible to forecast their movements. Thank you so much for your glowing comments about Mathews, he will certainly appreciate your feedback and we are really pleased you had an excellent experience on your activities with him. Your recommendation of us is greatly appreciated, and it would be our pleasure to welcome you back again one day.
