Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I turned up with no reservation and got a room easily - helpful staff especially when I got myself in a mix up about the room. Room facilities were good, functional, sufficient (no TV but I didn't need one - there's all of Qingdao to see!), and the restaurant/bar looked good, though I didn't partake. The hostel is in a very pleasant part of old Qingdao with many places to visit in walking distance. I would definitely stay here again on my next trip to Qingdao.

One of the best hostels I've stayed in in China. The attached cafe/restaurant is affordable and offers wide variety of food with good deals for hostel guests. Both private and dorm rooms were very comfortable, although bathroom facilities weren't as nice as the rest of the hostel. Beautiful building with great design as well.

Kaiyu in the heart of old Qingdao was once a big church back in the day. Now it's put to much better use as a very nice place to stay. Yes, it's old. Yes, the floors are dirty and too old to polish the way that many are accustomed too. What matters is the bed and sheets... both were impeccably clean. The large group restrooms were clean as well. Its a much better deal than some of these business hotels folks! The best thing about the Kaiyu is the lounge. Very artistically done, and EXCELLENT western food! Cheap! I've been to many youth hostels in China and the food is usually a disappointment at best. This food rocks, tastes authentic and much cheaper than western expat places. I live in QD now, but still return to Kaiyu just for a bite to eat in their lounge. Very cool old mellow soundtrack by the way. I would like to point out that the staff is quite friendly, sometimes they can't understand English so well, but HEY! your in China and they are doing their best. With patience I found that every staff person I dealt with wanted me to have a good experience. They like westerners here! I did leave my $40 swim trunks in the WC and came back 4 days later and they found it! They really do care at the Kaiyu.

Rooms are really very simple. I have seen much better hostels in China.
However bar in the first floor is really nice and cozy.

We stayed in this hostel back in October 2010 and really enjoyed our stay. The room and bathroom was fine, the food and bar was very good and the staff were helpful and friendly.

Stayed here over a bank holiday weekend and really loved this place. The bar/restaurant was really relaxed during the day & quite lively at night with live music and great drinks. The rooms were nice, super comfy bed and lovely new bathroom. Great breakfast in the morning, although a little pricey for what you got, but after months of no western food I was happy to pay for it! The staff were super helpful - even gave us their own hostel map for LaoShan to take with us! They're really informative, welcoming and genuine. But really, the bar/restaurant probably was the best thing for me, great food and service and just a lovely homely atmosphere! Will def be back if I'm in Qingdao again!

This hostel is clean and quiet which is really all I require. The only downside for me was the travel guide we are using said the private rooms were Y120 in actuality they were Y180. Nevertheless they were clean! The food was good; I mostly ate toast for breakfast (best huge chunky toast of my life), pizza was decent, it could have used a couple extra minutes in the oven, and we dined on the lasagna which was EXCELLENT! Right across the street literally on the corner, there is a woman who has several kegs set up and you can purchase a BAG of beer. Or you can grab a class for Y2 and hangout with the locals which is always fun! It was by FAR the cheapest beer out there and beats spending Y10 at the hostel. :)

The best thing about this hotel is the bar and restaurant. We met lots of people and enjoyed some very reaonsably priced beer.

The room was clean and spacious and the staff were incredibly helpful.

The only reason I don't score it as 'excellent' is the bathrooms which are not as nice as the rest of the hotel even though recently refurbished.

Would definitely stay again.

a very nice hotel with spacious rooms, nice bathrooms, very comfortable bed; on the fourth floor there is a nice littel balcony and a spacious common room. downstairs is the restaurant but the choice for breakfast is a bit disappointing and the coffee is extra. great is the location: right in the centre of the old part of town.
