I stayed here mid-February. The hotel is across the street from the beach, less than a minute walk. The room was small but I don't spend a lot of time in the room. If you are out all day, and just looking for a place to sleep, it's perfect. The wifi was ok. Standard buffet breakfast was included. I liked it. Helpful, friendly front desk staff, who spoke decent enough english. Short walk to Bocagrande beach. Overall decent location.

After spending two evenings at home researching online for a hotel in Cartagena, I decided on booking Hotel San Martin located in Bocagrande. My decision was based on the high rating Hotel San Martin received from three different websites, and the very affordable price point. When I arrived the front staff were friendly and very helpful, which was the beginning of a very positive stay. The room was very spacious, clean and the bed was comfortable. The breakfast buffet was good, the coffee outstanding, and it was nice to sit outside on the patio to enjoy breakfast. The front desk booked my MarSol shuttle to Santa Marta for the following day, which arrived on-time to pick me up from the hotel lobby. I would most certainly recommend Hotel San Martin to any traveler based on the positive experience that I had.

I stayed 2 nights in Hotel San Martin in Bocagrande then went to the old city to a hotel of similar quality. In both there was Wifi, hot water, nice tiled bathrooms with glass showers, AC, TV, and hot breakfast. I paid my bill at San Martin then was shocked to see the hotel bill in the walled city - it was exactly twice the price.

If you really want to spend most of your time in the old city, a cab ride of 3 dollars or a walk of 15 minutes will get you there. Personally, I enjoyed the beaches and long bike/walkway around the peninsula. There is lots of shopping for great colombian fashions as well.
It's TOTALLY safe and the walkway has charming lights and security guards every block for evening strolls. It has a distinctive COLOMBIAN feel rather than the TOURIST feel of the old city.

I've read many websites dismissing Bocagrande as destination of interest but I'm glad I went to see for myself. On my next trip - I'll be staying at Hotel San Martin in Bocagrande.

I booked this hotel after reading reviews on Trip Advisor. I have to say the hotel surpassed all my expectations. The location is great. The service was unbeatable (I later had the opportunity to stay at a 5-star hotel down the street and it was bad compared to this hotel). The front desk is extremely serviceable. The breakfast selection was great and fresh. The location was perfect. The beach is a block away from this hotel. There were no vendors on the beach approaching tourists. Very safe area.

The Hotel San Martin was a very cute and reasonable option while touring Cartagena, Columbia. It's located in the Bocagrande area, it's easy to get around and well situated for dining, shopping and beaching. The hotel is a good 3 star option with clean rooms and very attentive staff.

If you are looking to spend all your touring time in the old city, the walk from the hotel is quite long (and hot) but the taxi options are plentiful. The breakfast is good and very comfortable when sitting outside in the early morning.

Front desk staff very accommodating and English is spoken very well. They can also help arrange tours of other areas, including a boat trip to nearby islands for a prettier beach experience than the one a few blocks away.

My parents and I stayed in Cartagena for 4 days and 4 nights. We flew in from Bogota to spend a few days in a different city. We were pleasantly surprised with this hotel. At first we thought with the street its on, it wouldn't be up to par. The staff was incredibly friendly.. Literally wouldn't let you do a thing. Always there to open the door, pour your coffee and prepare your breakfast. (breakfast is extremely good as well!) Every day we would leave to explore the city and our rooms were constantly cleaned as well as our sheets. Room would be kept pretty cold as the days can get hot. Everything went smoothly at our stay here!

I will say that most the shops around this area are purely for tourists. Vendors selling things like hats, sunglasses, anything you can think of. We recommend to go to one of the newer malls built that are extremely clean to get your shopping done!

In regards to the location, it cost us 3$ to get to old towne so not a big deal at all. The cab ride is worth the savings as you are just paying for location in old town.

Hello all, got back from Cartagena last week and spent 3 nights here. Originally I wanted to stay at a Bocagrande hotel right on the beach, but as my trip got closer I couldn't really afford the extra money to spend & decided to stay here, just one block from the beach and save roughly $75 per night compared to the others I was looking at. This hotel is great, so glad I decided to stay here and save my money. A taxi from the airport is around $9, check-in was very quick. It is a small hotel so the staff was expecting me and even guessed my name when I arrived to check-in. Before going out I would have a beer in the lobby/ patio for $2 and they knew my name to charge it to the room. Great A/C, hot water, and a safe populated area. There is a McDonalds across the street, a couple small casinos real close, and the beach is a 5min walk. It's located on a busy one way street, but that was great because I could walk out of the hotel and get a taxi within seconds. $3 cab rides to the walled city /or getsemani. Save your money, stay here.

If you want to save some money (even though you will pay cab rides) by not staying in the walled city, then it maybe a good choice. Most customers are locals, it is a clean place, rooms are a little better than basic, breakfast is average. There are a few good food options around in the next few blocks toward the old city. I was unsure what to expect when arriving at this hotel as all the hotels in Cartagena seem lovely in photos on the internet and this hotel was very reasonably priced for its location. (We paid $176,000 pesos for a triple room, including buffet breakfast) However, we were quick to realise that this hotel was everything it claimed to be and more. A lovely change from the high rises all over Bocagrande, it is laid out over only one floor, nice and cool within and beautifully decorated. The rooms were very spacious with nice bathrooms, flat screen television with cable, minibar with very cheap prices ($2800 pesos for a beer) and powerful airconditioning which you can adjust to suit you. The best thing for us was the staff who were very helpful and so friendly. They gave us the latest check-out they could manage as our flight left late at night, kept our bags behind the desk until 9pm. We kept our valuables in the safe at reception and had no problems with that. The receptionist booked us a trip to the Islas Rosario with a discount unmatched by any other operator that we found in Cartagena. Even the touts by the docks acknowleged they couldn't beat it! Perhaps the only thing that would have made it better is having hot water, as we arrived in the rainy season and it wasn't really sunny at all. A good trick, though, that the receptionist mentioned is that at 12pm the water does in fact come out warm!
All in all, it was the best part of our holiday and I am thankful for the other reviewer here for recommending it, as that was the reason we finally chose this gem of a hotel.

I stayed at this beautiful hotel for four nights in early May 2008.
May 2-6. I stayed in room # 104, on the ground floor. Room had a big queen size bed and a single bed. This is a great little 40 room hotel, located on Cartagena's main road of San Martin Avenida. This hotel has been recently completely refurbished in the old Spanish colonial style. Great A.C. in the room. Fully stocked mini-bar with reasonable priced items. Room service is available, from a reasonably priced menu. A free breakfast buffett(which is hard to find at any other hotel in this town). They have a great big veranda slash side-walk cafe type sitting area on the front and side of the hotel, but no dining tables on the inside, so, I would imagine that inclement weather, you would carry your free breakfast buffett back to your room, in order to eat it. With the front of the hotel facing north, the sun, is constanly on the hotel, so, there is very little shaded areas. if they would add shades to the tables, that would help a lot. Or better yet, extend a roof over the entire area, in keeping with the arcaticture of the style of the building. The food was good, most Colombian food is nothing to get excited about. It's basic and filling. For you Gringo turistas, diagonally across the street is a Micky D's(McDonalds)(the only one in town) So, if you can't remember the address of the hotel, for the taxi driver, just tell him to take you to McDonald's. Directly across the street is another well know S.A. restaurant chain, Crapes & Waffles. But, it does not open until noon-time, until 11 P.M.
I rated this hotel as 3 stars. It does not have a swimming pool, but you are just a one block walk from the ocean. The ground floor rooms do not have windows that look outward of the building, but they do look inward, toward the small courtyards.
The biggest negative I found, was that they did not have individual room safes in the rooms. Security, is a big plus for me when I travel. The hotel was very secure and safe, but, I just like that extra benefit of having my own room safe.
The price of the rooms are from 132,000 COP(Colombian Peso)
( $ 73 U.S.D.) to 143,000 COP( $ 80 U.S.D.)
This is a great convient hotel, very well kept, and staffed, great maid service, they can arrange tours for you also. About half of the staff understands some English. Everybody was very helpful.
There was one other negative, this hotel does not have it's own web site(and it should). So, you have to book through a third party web site, which I really do not like, but, I took a chance.
And, the only reason that my booking went right to begin with, was that I was already in Cartagena(staying at another hotel), and, I went to this hotel to re-confirm my reservations. After a couple of hours of confusion, my reservations were confirmed.
I booked my stay at this hotel for when I returned to Cartagena, after my trip to Ecuador.
Please, Hotel San Martin, invest in your own web site, and add some room safes, and, you could add another half a star to your rating. I would definately return to this hotel on my next visit to Cartagena.
Free internet(one computer) in the lobby, for use by guests.
