We stayed 5 nights at the end of February 2023 in suite 407 of the Hilton Nacar hotel in Cartagena, Colombia. Suite 407 is the penthouse suite with a private pool on the roof. The hotel is in 2 separate buildings. The main building ( where we checked in ) is just around the corner from the building where all the suites are located. The hotel is situated in an old colonial style residence but has been completely renovated with all the modern conveniences. There is no elevator, but all the suites are on the second floor. However, due to the fact that the local architecture favors rooms with extremely high ceilings to combat the heat, climbing one flight of stairs takes you up almost 25 feet - more than double of an average North American home’s ceilings. The renovations have been done with great care. Modern elements ( plumbing, lighting, air conditioning ) have been seamlessly integrated into the rustic charm of the original architecture. The decoration of the rooms and common areas favors light colors and natural materials giving one a sense of harmony between past and present. The vibe is really Caribbean chic. Our room was enormous, almost 120 square meters but with the ceiling rising to 25 feet, the sensation was really WOW ! Everything was white and natural tones with tons of light coming in the tall windows and the skylight over the washroom area. The entire suite is open plan, with only the toilet being separate from the rest of the space. This big suite has everything that defines luxury: a big king sized bed, big shower, enclosed toilet, double sinks, large soaking tub, a large sofa and lots of room. On the practical side, there is also a large mirror, a safe, a remote control blackout shade, a Nespresso espresso machine ( with Colombia coffee pods ) and a mini bar fridge stocked with a variety of refreshments to purchase. One note about this fridge: it not only had enough extra room for 2 large bottles of water and/or wine, but unlike the majority of these minibar fridges one tends to find in hotel rooms all over the world, this one actually got your drinks really cold. The bed was quite soft, but sleepable and there was a choice of pillows. The suite had 2 air conditioning units, so at times it was quite chilly in the room, however you can control them yourself with remotes. There is an enormous staircase in the center of the suite that takes you up to your own private rooftop terrace. This is where the magic happens. As you step out onto the terrace you have a shaded sitting area to your left. To your right is a short passageway that leads you up to the pièce de resistance of the suite: the private 20 foot long pool with 2 chaise lounge and sun, sun, sun! The pool is tiled in small blue squares and is about 4 feet deep - perfect for cooling off after a long hot day of touristing ! The sun shines on the pool almost all day long, so it gets wonderfully warm by the end of the day. This suite is not only perfect on the inside, but it is also in the ideal location for almost instant access to great restaurants, great bars and all the tourist attractions of the old city. It is very very quiet inside the room and on the rooftop. The hotel website describes the suite having a semi-private terrace, which at the time of booking this hotel, made us think that part of the rooftop was a public passageway that led to our private pool area. Once we were on the rooftop, we realized that “semi-private” refers to the fact that one can see a few other rooftop terraces: those of the hotel as well as a few local residents. Our rooftop terrace was definitely private to us and we found that in reality we were all alone all of the time. It was just us and the birds ! There are only 3 negative things to mention. The first would be that the shaded seated area of the rooftop terrace needs a good cleaning and the second one would be the hit and miss telephone service. I called for service three times and each time it was a different story. The first time, it took several minutes for the phone to be answered, the second time, I got through right away but the third time I got no answer, despite calling the front desk, room service, housekeeping and “0”. The third negative point is that there does not seem to be room service offered. There’s a button on the phone for room service, but there’s no room service menu. ( But no one answers when you press the room service button, so even if there was a menu, what good would it be ) However all these slight negative points can be easily corrected by the management. We hope they do, as we plan to be back really soon to suite 407 of the Hilton Nacar hotel in sunny, friendly Cartagena, Colombia.…
