Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Sharing this for the safety of others. My husband and I stayed at the San Lazaro Art Hotel for 4 nights. My biggest concern was safety. HUGE SAFETY ISSUE: Upon returning to our room from breakfast on our third day I noticed that someone had shoved toilet paper into the holes on the door where the door locks are supposed to catch (see photos). The paper was shoved in exactly deep enough to keep the prongs on the lock from going in. And just shallow enough to keep it from being visible unless some was really paying attention. The depth of the tissue was perfect for someone to slide a thin object such as a credit card into the latch area and easily push the door open. It was clear that someone who had access to our room while we were away had done this. Which narrowed it down to staff members or cleaning crew. If you stay at this hotel PLEASE BEWARE!!! Another safety concern to be aware of is the outside patios. The patios are connected to the rooms next to you. After the first night I noticed that the planters that are supposed to act as a barrier between the connected balconies were moved and our patio chairs were removed from our patio table by the people in the room next door. The night before each room’s outside table had 2 chairs, the next night the neighbors had 4 chairs and we did not have any. The design is unsafe. We brought both issues to the attention of management. The manager on-site asked me not to write a review because she wanted to investigate. The manager then offered to pay for our taxi to the airport for our departure to “make things right”. We could have robbed or even worse!!! There is no excuse anyone can give for tissue shoved into locks. BEWARE IF YOU ARE A WOMAN TRAVELING ALONE OR WITH YOUNG CHILDREN!!!

Dear Awashing05 Thank you for taking your time to give us your review about your stay at our hotel. We are very surprised by what you say about security since for us the most important thing is that our guests are comfortable and safe. We will check what you tell us about the paper on the door locks and the planters and we will investigate it, however it is important to notify you that our worker selection process is very rigorous with the safety of our guests as a priority. We are very sorry that we did not meet your expectations during your last stay. We hope to have a new opportunity to welcome you and change your perspective about our hotel. Hotel's Favourite
Excellent hotel. It's a ten minute walk out of the old town. But the pro is that it is quiet and an amazing view of the castle from the restaurant and bar. The staff were extremely helpful and stood outside to get you a taxi and make sure you got to the right place. The place is very clean and the AC works really well which is very important as the town is scorching hot in the afternoon and hot the rest of the 24 hours. Definitely get the breakfast buffet to start your day. It's also right next to a huge shopping mall so you can go over there to buy water or food or books or whatever. Very useful. I felt safe walking to and from the city even in the evening, but I'm a fat ugly old 60 year old so maybe I'm not a target!

We stayed at San Lazaro for 3 weeks. We have stayed in many hotels, but never experienced anything like this hotel. A wonderful friendliness, helpful staff, nice people who meet you with respect and a genuine smile. They listen to you and arrange things for us to have the best possible stay. . The view of the fortress of San Felipe is amazing! The breakfast and the room were good. There is a shopping center 3 minutes away. Fantastic! Here you get everything you need. It is only 8 minutes to the center by taxi and costs 15 pesos. Our 3 weeks exceeded all expectations and we strongly recommend the hotel.

My wife and I stayed here with another couple for three nights. We liked the fact that the property was directly across the street from San Felipe fortress. We also liked the fact that this is a fairly small place, I think 36 rooms. It was fun hanging out at the pool while having cold drinks and watching people tour the fortress. The breakfast was very diverse and guests can get cooked to order eggs. We had dinners in the food court at the large shopping mall which is about a block from the hotel. The property is close enough to Cartagena old town to walk but we were advised not to do so in nighttime hours. The staff were pleasant and helpful. All in all we enjoyed our stay.

The service here is 5 star, all the staff really show a lot of warmth to the guests. Henry even helped my husband get his prescription sunglasses fixed, by taking them to an opticians himself, the charge was minimal, it would have been far more expensive for my husband to have got them fixed himself. Robert was always helpful and friendly. Roger made the best cocktails. This is the second time we have been to this hotel, and absolutely loved it. The food and drinks are all very good, and below normal hotel prices. Everything was excellent.

I have travelled with family for vacation in Cartagena. The hotel is very well located, just outside the San Felipe fortress and next to the shopping mall (Mallplaza Cartagena). It took several minutes to reach the walled city of Cartagena using Uber. The rooms were large, mini bar filled with snacks and drinks, cleaning very good, concierge very helpful for booking trips and activities, breakfast very good. Overall, the staff was always very attentive and quick to react to all the requests.

I have stayed here multiple times. I must say my stay is always top notch. The staff are so nice and the hotel is very clean and in a perfect location. Its right next to the mall and shopping and its right across from the castle. There is an ATM right outside the door so you don't have to look for one. Plus it is very secure even at night. There is security to let people in the hotel at night. So this is the only hotel I stay at when I'm in Cartagena.
