One of the cleaners stole my coat at this hostel. I know this because I happened to be there when she showed up for work two weeks later wearing it. The manager was very apologetic, returned and fixed the coat, (long story, but when she was caught, the cleaner tore a hole in it) and refunded part of my stay. Unfortunately she said she had to talk to owner about firing the cleaner because the theft didnt show up on the security footage (it was an ultralight down coat that easily fits in a small bag or pocket). She said she'd inform me but I never heard from them again. So there's a good chance that thief might still be working there. Pity. In every other way, I quite liked this hostel and if I knew the cleaner was fired I would probably choose it for my next visit. The rest of the staff were lovely and I felt right at home - the location is very good.

Location:
the Hostel is situated well in Poblado next to all basic necessaties. You have 2 exchanges just 2 minutes walk from the Hostel, a barber shop and Exito (supermarket) as well as many restaurants around the area and cafes.

Value for Money:
I found it very well priced for the location and quality. I have stayed for 17 nights in a private room.

Breakfast:
Not that great and repetitive if you are staying for a long time. Can be a little smelly as they don't use any spices or pepper. The lady that cooks is really friendly though and very kind.

Staff:
Very friendly; Alejandro, Kevin, IIorani, Ana and the lady in the kitchen are all helpful, respectful and friendly.

Room:
Clean and in good condition. TV has no english channels so much useless if you know basic Spanish. Bathrooms are good. Room service is done every two days.

Comfort:
My room was no. 207 next to the metal stairs taking you to the top floor. This can be noisy and don't expect to make much sleep. People stay partying until at least 2:00 AM and then walk back to their rooms, where they also are a bit noisy. In the morning from 8:00 AM you start hearing all the plates and people having breakfast. So, you basically get around 6:00 hours in total to sleep, at best. If you turn on the light at night in the room, people passing by will be able to see you clearly in the room, thus not much privacy because the curtains are see through and one of the beds is just under the window. The path to the top floor is very narrow forcing people going to the top floor to bump into the window and the door sometimes at night or in the morning (especially if having big back packs) and waking you up.

I realise this is long but READ IT if you plan to leave Medellin with your valuables. Up until our last night here I would have said stay at Happy Buddha by all means. However, after a night out we got back to find the door to our room wide open and both my friend's iPod and my iPhone were missing. To cut a very long story short we told the night receptionist, who did very little to help us - so with the help of "find my iPhone" the alarm went off and we discovered that he had the iPod in his pocket!!! He then claimed to have found it in a bathroom which neither of us even knew existed. We asked him to show us said bathroom and my phone somehow magically materialized by the sink. The wifi and location settings were switched off and my background had been changed. When we reported it the next morning the receptionist on duty said the hostel were unwilling to accept any responsibility for the fact that someone had blatantly taken our items from a locked room. He was rude, unprofessional and basically told us it was our problem and that we would receive no compensation. So we are not leaving "happy" in any sense of the word. Infact I'm absolutely livid. If you choose to stay here be ready to have your privacy violated - do NOT trust the staff and make sure you lock any valuables away. They also make you pay on arrival for their appalling service, the rooms are tiny, the fans don't work and it's hotter than the sun. No surprise that trip advisor hates them.

I do not recommend this place for people that like to go sleeping before 4 am in the morning. The music from the bar is very loud until early in the morning. After that groups of drunk people will come back to their rooms. Said drunk people will scream or sing in the common areas without being interrupted in any way by the hostel staff. Then, at around 7 in the morning, there is noise again.

In general the hostel staff is not particularly helpfull.

If you like beerpong, it‘s perfect for you!

I stayed here for 4 nights. The hostel has a great atmosphere, lots of facilities and the hub for backpackers in the region. However, the staff behaviour and attitude is insulting. Firstly they would only give us 1 keycard between 3. Then 3 more boys who we didn't know came to our dorm and we told that we all had to share a key. The cleaner stole a lot of my belongings including perfume, make up, malaria tablets etc. when I questioned this they gave me back one can of insect repellent and said the rest was in the bin. I think not. Lock up anything of slight value or the light finger staff including the manager will have it.

Response from hbhostal, Manager at Happy Buddha Boutique Hostel
Responded 23 Sept 2015
Hello, im glad you liked our social atmosphere, like you said Happy Buddha is a hub for travelers in South America and its a great place to meet people and share experiences. In defense of our house keepers we have never had a theft, they are honest and humble people who work VERY hard for a small wage. You malaria pills and make up was thrown out because you checked out and left a dirty looking plastic grocery bag behind. When you returned later that evening it was too late, as it had been thrown out. I understand you checked back in and stayed another week so it must not have been so bad after all.

This is a decent place but had a few annoying/concerning aspects. Room was clean. Bed was comfortable. Water was hot. Good location with lots to do nearby.
Yes it's a party hostel but it really wasn't that loud when trying to sleep.
Checking in they make you pay up front. They state they take credit cards but refused ours requesting cash only. Lighting in room is very poor. Room was very stuffy. Sliding door to balcony did not have a lock and required the maintenance man to place a screw into the door frame.
There were police with drug dog on the premises the last night we were here.
They state they have free omelette bar but that is not occurring anymore -- I think due to contamination. My boyfriend got sick right afterwards.

We stayed in a tiny 6 bed dorm and all of us staying in this room went out for the night. When we returned to our room at around 2am the door was open and 2 phones had gone missing from a bag. When this was raised with the guy working reception on the night (Sat 8th October) he initially came to the room to look before we rang one of the phones to check we hadn't been stupid and it was in his pocket. He then claimed he found it in one of the toilets earlier on the other side of the hostel which none of us had used or even knew existed and returned this phone. He then took us to the toilet where it was supposedly found and as we walked in after him the second phone magically appeared on the sink. When we looked at the second phone the background had been changed and the phone had been used.

In the morning this was raised with the receptionist who couldn't help and said to come back tomorrow when the manager was in. He then went on to say that it was actually a cleaner who found the phones (despite no cleaners working at that time of night and the guy who had our phones saying he had found them himself). He said he knew this because he had seen it on CCTV but refused to show us this footage and not sure why he would be reviewing a previous night's CCTV anyway.

Majority of staff seem rude and clueless as the place was packed although the guy who worked the Friday overnight shift on reception (7th Oct) deserves credit for being the only decent member of staff there who knew how to interact with people.

Bar gets too busy on a weekend - recommend staying elsewhere and heading over to the bar if you are desperate to see what the fuss is all about as they let anyone in apparently.

It was clean here.. I’m not really the partyer type, but I was still able to meet more and more people while in through Colombia. I met the travelers from all hostel while at Buddha. They eventually passed through there. Which made us happy to be somewhere you're sure others are. The rooms were modern and comfy for a quick stay! Slept well too! :D

Yes but it's strength will be dependant on where you are in the hostel. It wasn't great in our room but there were lots of people sitting around using it in communal areas

Yes but no silverwear (maybe 2 butter knifes and if you are luck a fork) and no glasses to drink out of... if you can get around that, yes...
