This is rather a long review. So, if you’ve got the attention span of a knat, can’t be bothered to read more than two paragraphs or simply have an eversion to apostrophes, here’s my Executive Summary in 1 line.

“A good hotel, with excellent staff that needs some investment and careful thought as to what the offering actually is".

Ah, I see you’re still reading! You must want to read the real inside story from somebody who has written well over a 1,300 reviews in 50 different countries rather than a 1 review wonder. And if you do get to the end, please give my fragile ego a boost with a nice “LIKE” – I thank you.

ARRIVAL/RECEPTION
A 45 minute three stop Tui transfer from Sharm Airport was fine. Check in at the hotel though wasn’t great. Guided to a seat in the corner of the grandiose reception area and given a welcome drink we sat there and sat there and sat there for 15+ minutes. A visit in the end to the helpful receptionist was met with a “sorry we didn’t know you were there comment”. Nice start. And an interesting start when all the staff, on cue say “welcome to your second home”. Marketing speak not delivered in practice? No, that’s too harsh on my part – all the staff here are brilliant.

Bags located, we were whisked off in a lightening quick golf buggy transfer around the dark resort which made us think the estate was huge. It isn’t, it’s just that the well-intentioned driver wanted to show us everything at brake neck speed, never a good idea after a long flight. TOP TIP: Don’t stand at reception like a lemon for more than a couple of minutes and never ever judge a hotel at night when you’re tired and irritable.

ROOM
Arriving at our partial sea view room, in the centre of the resort we were met with a group of workmen, cleaners and staff making final preparations. Some sort of technical/plumbing problem? Five minutes later we were in. The room of good size had everything there. Just old and dated and in need of a refurbishment after what looked like a good two decades of use. Clean and tidy with quite a few mozzies (bring DEET if you don’t want to get bitten), it was fine. Many thanks to Fahalla our room attendant who did a really GREAT job!! TOP TIP: Note that from the reception to the lower pool/beach area there are over 150 steps so think carefully about requesting an accessible room in advance if you have a problem getting around. There are however regular shuttles buzzing around the resort every 15 minutes belching out diesel fumes in the general direction of the bar/snack area…. Management, please consider getting electric vehicles ASAP and do your bit for the health of your guests.

RESTAURANTS
We chose the SM because of the fact that they offer a number of A La Carte Restaurants included in the Al Inclusive (AI) package. The only exception being the Felucca Seafood Restaurant which has high additional charges, lacks any sort of atmosphere and was always empty - hardly surprising IMO. TOP TIP: I tried to book the restaurants in advance of my stay, but the hotel does not allow this. Instead you book onsite 2 days ahead when the reservation systems are open. It worked fine for us except on the first day when all tables had been taken. So get in there early as soon as the booking window is open.

In summary the dining experiences which I detail below were pretty good. Some better than others, but none that you would truly think wow, with the exception of Basilica (Italian).

HORIZON BUFFET
A bun fight as many AI buffets sadly are whether at breakfast, lunch or dinner. Not a pleasant experience although the food in fairness was ok as buffets go. Our “red friends” from the country that we shall not name constantly pushed their way in to the food stations and then sadly left most of what they had taken in an obscene waste of food that really was quite upsetting. Breakfast was busy from 0730 until 0900 and then there was a markedly quieter period. Lunch was again very busy and proved popular with many guests. The quality and variety of the food on offer arguably better than dinner. Dinner lacked any sort of sophistication or real enjoyment. A school canteen sprang to mind, but then from memory the diners in school refectories are generally better behaved… My biggest annoyance? There was never any spoons on the table, not sure why? EVERY SINGLE MEAL WE HAD IN HORIZON we had to ask for a spoon. Small thing but really annoying TOP TIP: If you like to pile your plate high with food, put on 5kg of weight and have no manners, you will feel perfectly at home. Take my advice and only go for breakfast after 0900 or a late lunch when the crowd subsides. PS NOT the hotels fault for behaviour of guests!!

BASILICO – ITALIAN - EXCELLENT. The best restaurant by some considerable distance. Food quality, variety and service right up there. Loved it so much we went twice. Thank you.

MANZOKU – ASIAN – GOOD – the freshly made Sushi was superb. Overall 100% better than Horizon.

MANGAL – BBQ - Surprisingly GOOD. Food cooked to order. The excellent team from Chimichurri/Snack Bar were right on their game.

GAMILA - ORIENTAL – AVERAGE - A perfectly acceptable Egyptian meal served at a strange shack and patio on the edge of the resort overlooking what appeared to be a commune or was that the gin kicking in?

BEACH AND SNORKELLING
Didn’t spend any time on the beach which can best described as a 100m wide strip extending on to coarse sand and then bleached coral. Lots of sun loungers, but our “red friends” seem to have copied the Germans as new masters of bagging sun loungers with their towels, two days in advance of when they actually need them. A permanent jetty stretches from the beach frontage to the edge of the reef. Here in a safe area which has watchful lifeguards, you can descend from the platform into the warm Red Sea and witness a myriad of tropical fish right in front of your eyes. Not the Barrier Reef, but a pleasant enough area to while away an hour or so without having to book a snorkelling excursion. TOP TIP: Bring your beach shoes. Plus, walk 200m outside of the hotel and buy your own mask/snorkel from a local shop as you will have paid for the hire charge in just two days and support the locals. Bargain. You’re welcome.

POOLS
Three/four to have a swim in. The adults only area in a soulless part of the resort at the top of a hill. A larger pool with swim-up bar near the space which doubles as night time entertainment. Quiet and a good place to hang out if you don’t like “Boom Boom” Arabic popular music played at high levels for half the day. If you do, head to the two pools at the bottom of the resort near the beach. Here you can Zumba and play pool games to your hearts content with the enthusiastic entertainments team. “whoop whoop”.

GARDENS
Beautiful! Well kept and a pleasure to walk around. I often think that resort garden teams in general don’t get the kudos they deserve. The layout of the SM is well thought out and the attention to detail in terms of walkways and associated planting schemes deserves recognition because it is as good as it gets anywhere. Well done, thank you. TOP TIP: Look out for Woody Woodpecker, the brown bird with amazing head plumage.

ENTERTAINMENT
Loads for kids! And this is a clue. If you think this will be an adults only resort, think again. Many families were here in late November as I guess other than the UK, countries especially from where our “red friends” come from travel en masse at this time of the year because of the pleasant weather. Made me think I will book adults only next time… The adult evening entertainment was limited, a good lady vocalist a so-so saxophonist and an a pleasant enough acoustic guitar player. The team did their best, but again not sure who they were pitching their acts to in terms of audience….

BUT MY BIGGEST annoyance has to be the kids MINI Disco which takes place around 2030 right in front of the two best A La Carte restaurants, namely the Basilica and Manzoku. This is a really bad idea. Meals ruined by kids having a good time and playing games. Sorry, just doesn’t work for me. Management you really do need to change this as it’s totally incongruous with your “fine dining”. You try whispering sweet romantic nothings to your loved one only for your words to be drowned out by the sound of the Birdie song. TOP TIP go for an early dining time to avoid the racket of the Mini-Disco.

OTHER GUESTS
I’ve mentioned a few times our “red friends”. They really do need to learn some manners and treat the excellent hotel staff with respect. They don’t. They just demand with a scowling face and treat people with contempt and disrespect. This overrun of “red friends” is of course not exclusive to this hotel or indeed Egypt as a whole and I know they support a critical part of the country’s economy. It’s just that I hope that one day they will get the message and treat people properly. I can but hope and dream.

OUT AND ABOUT
We passed on the local excursions having been on desert trips, quad rides and diving trips before. They were available and were good value, but not for us. We did however walk the couple of miles from the hotel down into Old Sharm a walk along long roadsides with few points of interest. Afterall this area is simply a series of buildings on the edge of the desert. Once in town, we had a good walk around the mosque area which hadn’t come to life as it was the morning. TOP TIP: Go in the early evening when the market is open and the temperature cooler.

STAFF THE BRILLIANT STAFF
Some of the best in the business. Every single member of staff I came across was friendly, kind and helpful. What would have been an average holiday became a good holiday because of the staff. Far too many to say thank you to BUT: Mostafa, Mohammed, Ahmed, Mamhoud, Ashraf, were stand out members of the team at the Pool Snack area. Shout out to all bar staff who were engaging, helpful and genuinely wanted guests to have a good time. Also thanks to Farhalla our Room Man who fought valiantly against the mozzies, day and night. The one thing the hotel has definitely got right is its staffing. Well done one and all. THANK YOU. HR Department take a bow.

SUMMARY
I guess ultimately we got what we paid for. I say this having spent 50% more a couple of years ago and had a superb trip to the Baron Hotel in Hurgharda, a truly 5 star hotel in anbodys language. Check my earlier review for the full story. This time back in Egypt at the Sunrise Montemare we had a good, but not exceptional overall experience. I wish Tripadvisor had a button between Average and Very Good. In the end I went for Very Good rather than Average because this would have been unfair particularly as the staff were superb.

If you’re looking for a real high end 5 star look elsewhere. But if you want a good value 5* that does a job in terms of a week in the sun then definitely consider. As I said in the opening, I don’t quite know what clientele the Sunrise Montemare is trying to attract. It attempts to be high end, but falls short in overall food offering or contemporary bedroom standards – which are in fairness in the process of being refurbished. However the staff are 5 star and that is the thing I will remember most of all. To them I say THANK YOU!!!!!!!

Very nice all in hotel with outstanding service and very friendly personell overal.
Food is very tasty but western inspired. When the evening theme is local (Egypt style) I enjoyed it even more because it's there home cuisine and you taste it in the seasoning.
Pools are well spread over the complex, you never have a crouded feeling and the beds are super comfortable.
Rooms and beds are good quality and airco works perfectly if you want to cool down extra.
Would definetly come back here.

My partner and I stayed here the first two weeks of March. The hotel was immaculate, clean, tidy and great facilities. The staff were amazing and couldn't do enough for you.
Very quiet being adult only and several pools to choose from.
Food was what you would expect although we were led to believe from the brochure that there is a vegetarian/ vegan section of the main restaurant which was untrue. There is a Vegan A la Carte. The staff noticed I didn't have a lot of food at meal times and asked why, explained that I was vegetarian and they offered to make anything. I had a lovely vegetable curry but it was nearing the end of th holiday.
Trips with the rep were ridiculously expensive, £66 per person, we were told by the TUI rep it was adult and Brit's only. We were not told about a hire charge for snorkelling equipment costing £15 per person, and our boat had children, French, Dutch and German people on the boat. We were also told there was a late boat trip pick up which was also untrue with 1.5 hour wait at the Marina.
The transport from the airport to the hotel upon arrival was awful: a mini bus van with staff carrying cases up onto the roof! Didn't feel safe going over speed ramps as you could hear the luggage moving around! My hand luggage was 'lost' but was returned to me that night.
Long waits in the A La Carte restaurants but spoke to staff at quality control meeting and this was rectified before we left. Quality control were generally very attentive but once or twice did not appear to listen by dismissing comments/ feedback (this was in the chinese and via telephone during one of the frequent calls to see if everything was ok)
Location was not great, nothing within walking distance and half an hour taxi ride to the Soho square and 10 minutes to the Old Market.
This was main criticism as the hotel, facilities and staff were fantastic.
Great if you want a quiet, relaxing holiday. If you prefer a bit more to do then a week is sufficient.

Booked a 10 night, all inclusive, stay directly with the resort and not through a tour operator.
The staff are fantastic..... genuinely sincere in wanting us to be happy throughout our stay.
Rooms very clean with super comfy beds.
As for dining..... the main “buffet” restaurant has lots of tasty variety and we especially liked the Asian(Chinese) and Egyptian restaurants.
Only disappointment for us was the Italian restaurant but others we met there liked it.

So, it’s a 5 star rating from us. Great resort with fabulous staff.
Will we return........most probably.

Hotel is OK but not 5 stars level . Facilities are ok but they need to focus on room cleaning as quality is not good as well to pool need professional cleaners , food quality is not up to 5 star hotel& they need to hire professional chiefs to have more varieties and improve food taste as kitchen staffs don't have enough knowledge and experience seems they are newly fresh.

We have now returned from three nights at the hotel.
An extraordinary experience, like being at home.
At the reception - you are greeted "Welcome home" and indeed this is the feeling.
There is a shuttle service throughout the hotel complex, and spa
and plenty of people always asking for your safety and wishes
We took a room with a private pool - very pampering, clean tidy and pleasant to stay

Sunrise Montemare is a fantastic resort. The food is varied, drinks delicious and service unbelievable. The hotel is spotlessly clean, and given its size that is no mean feat.

The facilities are incredible, and the views across the ocean amazing. There is also a gym, tennis courts, volleyball, mini golf, waterpolo ect.

The rooms are spacious and well appointed, with satellite tv, air conditioning and a very large bathroom. Being critical, they are a bit dated, but nevertheless kept spotlessly clean by housekeeping. The terraces and balconies are well sized and most offer some sea view even when not advertised which was a nice surprise. The site that the hotel is based on is very generous in size with all the accommodation spread out with beautiful gardens or pools in between, it is a very impressive and well maintained complex .

The main reason I wrote the review is due to the service the staff provide, it’s genuinely incredible. They are attentive, positive and nothing is too much trouble. From brining you drinks on the beach, remembering all your orders, cleaning your glasses or teaching you magic tricks. The senior management are also occasionally visible and will ask for honest feedback if they approach you. There is a clear aim for improvement and accountability within the hotel, which is rare.

I’d like to give a special mention to Mahmood, he is a brilliant waiter (Charcuterie) and made our stay even more memorable.

I would say the only other issue to be wary of is the loud and often pervasive entertainment. It is noticeable for a couple of hours in the morning and problematic in the evenings. I understand that some people want it, but it was very very very loud and every other guest we spoke to found it irritating and overbearing. It would potentially stop us returning if it wasn’t addressed, the volume simply needs to be reduced to a level that wouldn’t cause permanent hearing loss.

Returned this week from a lovely weeks break here. Upgraded to a swim up room however unfortunately was not heated so couldn’t really use it (we did try 🥶) so not really worth the upgrade cost at this time of year. Still a beautiful view from the room though!

Aside from this everything was spot on, the service spectacular! Nemo Dive Centre on site was great and their day trip on a Wednesday is well worth the money, even if you don’t wish to go in the water. Very small group on a lovely sized boat...felt like a millionaire for a day sunbathing up front!

We will be back next year...not something we usually do in retiring to the same resort!

The spa is excellent and the treatments were Devine and half the cost in UK.

Only slight gripe was our bed was far too hard...however a minor point in the grand scheme of things!

You won’t be disappointed.

As a couple we stayed at the Sunrise Montemare resort for a week in March. Before I get to the hotel i think i should mention Sharm airport. To get the insurance required they have now had to increase security checks. It took is over an hour to get out of the airport but leaving Sharm it took nearly 3 hours. You need to be patient with this. Take the $20 fast track in the airport, it is well worth it to avoid queues. The hotel is clean, tidy and well presented. Staff are great in all areas of the hotel. The building itself is a 5 star hotel. Only negative is that it is not quite sharp enough. Breakfast time the staff are not setting tables quickly enough, several times i was looking for my own cutlery. Go early for breakfast to avoid this. The food was OK but only OK. There is enough choice for a week but two weeks would be a stretch. In short we had a great week and would stay at the hotel again. To take this hotel to the next level it just needs to be a bit sharper.

Very very suprised! Very kind and friendly people at the reception. They arrived us very happily and friendly! We are very happy to say that we enjoyed our stay at the Hotel. The room was stunning. It was cleaned very good everyday and the roomkeeping was asking for any issues or special wishes on a daily basis. We had a nice view with the pool at our room and had a nice sea view too. The beach and the pool was very clean and beautiful. Very kind service at pool and beach. Always friendly. You have to try snorkling there the beach and riffs are beautiful. The food in the restaurant was nice. Very different variations daily. You have to try out the different kitchens there such as basilica and chimichurri. We enjoyed the stay very much and had daily fun and entertainment with the whole sharm vita animation team. They really made our stay active and funny! Looking forward onto going back there again!
