Hotel's Favourite
The coronavirus threat truly tested hotels and their personnel in ways never imagined. Mekosha staff went above and beyond to make sure everyone stayed healthy and safe, even including daily immunity boosting drinks. While the world was going crazy, the mood there was tranquil. Though this is listed as a hotel, it is an ayurvedic treatment facility also. Set on a calm river surrounded by nature and birdsong, it's a place I felt relaxed. With a walking trail and secluded nooks for yoga or book reading, there were places to get out of the room and into the outdoors. The pool was a daily treat for doing laps or just cooling off. The food was a highlight for me- lots of tasty recipes served attractively. I loved not having to worry about making choices. I knew that whatever was served would be a good choice for improving my health. The chef was generous with his time and offered dietary tips and instructions for making the dishes. Having a large communal table was a bonus so we could meet other guests from around the world. I always looked forward to sitting down to interesting conversation. The doctor and medical staff did a great job of finding appropriate treatments. I was there for 15 days doing the weight loss program and found success that continues with medicines the doctor sent home with me. If you plan to come for treatment, I'd recommend having a list of problems to present to the doctor, along with any medical information/records that could be helpful for diagnosis. Blood work and MRI's are available in the community. Some of the guests even did dental treatments from a local dentist. The therapists speak little English, but could communicate basic information. The hotel manager Elizabeth suggested outings for us before the hotels in India went on lockdown. I enjoyed seeing a temple celebration which included an elephant parade. We also visited nearby beaches to see fishing boats and a gorgeous sunset. She spoke fluent English and was helpful when trying to resolve any problem. The rooms were comfortable and large. I liked having the balcony and massage area ensuite. The tea and coffee station was welcome. The bed was comfortable. Overall, I'd say it was value for the accomodation. I felt like I came as a tourist, but left as a family member. I would love to go back again.

The food, the massages and the environment was exactly as i had hoped for. An ideal place to refresh and renew body, mind and spirit. Next time i shall come for a longer visit and enjoy the ensuite therapies to the hilt. Keep up the good work.

It seems hard to believe that I was at Mekosha a year ago and Covid 19 was just starting to be realised as a pandemic. I arrived in February last year 2020. I have always wanted to try panchakarma and so I researched places in Kerala. This place spoke to me and the correspondence was great with the team there. I have an autoimmune disease called sarcoidosis. It’s in my lungs and heart. As with most auto immune disease, there are no real findings with regards to the cause and treatments seem to be one size fits all. I felt drawn to Ayurvedic medicine and it made sense to me to treat the cause, not the symptoms. That one should cleanse the gut and the body and reset the immune system, teaching the body to heal itself. I was at a crossroads. After constant high inflammation in my heart, despite strenuous aggressive treatment, I couldn’t seem to control the situation with western medicine. I’d lost faith in it. I’d tried every eating and diet change, vegan, plant based, you name it. So I started trying to find alternatives. Chinese medicine, functional medicine, Accupuncture, reiki....so much time and money spent on searching for a breakthrough. I was assured by my communication with Mekosha that they had had people staying with my condition, with great success. They advised me to take the special ailments package for 21 days. This was the most amount of money I had spent at once on any holiday (not exactly a holiday) or treatment. At home, my doctors were wanting me to start a chemo treatment called methotrexate. I said give me time to cleanse and get into better shape and I will come back and start it. That was my plan. When I arrived I was picked up at the airport, it was the middle of the night so I was put into the yoga room until breakfast where I rested. I met the team, namely Elizabeth who was instantly loveable and charismatic. I came to realise she was definitely the heart of the place and ran a tight ship. I loved all the staff, the glorious chef Anoob, not just for his beautiful cuisine but for his pearls of wisdom which I still carry. I saw the doctor Maneesh on the first day, we went through my history and he suggested I have an ultra sound and an X-ray in Kerala. I went straight there, that was an experience, like a walk in centre, we could do with this situation in the uk. Immediate results and you keep the scans but very cheap. When the doc worked out my treatment for my stay, I told him about starting the drugs at home and he then announced that we could heal my condition with Ayurveda, that Western medicine always seeks to suppress the immune system whereas Ayurveda repairs and heals the body, restoring balance. He said I could taper down the steroids I was on and that with his plan and 3 months of follow up medication, I would never experience any problems again. He was 100% certain. I felt amazed. The treatment was harsh. Eating ghee every morning, increasingly, I felt sick and very tired but was assured this was the treatment working. Toxins were being removed. The rooms were beautiful and the therapists treat you there mostly. I loved it. It was the first time In many years that I had felt truly at peace and began to sleep deeply. I met some really amazing people, some of whom I am still in touch with. The actual site is glorious by the river, life takes on a slower pace as you rise early and enjoy the coolness of the morning, perhaps doing yoga, which I loved. The teacher/guru was amazing. Loved chatting every day with Elizabeth. I learnt a lot from her. She really helped me, I mean the staff aren’t just staff, they truly care and feel like friends very quickly. New people coming and going keeps things fresh. A lot of people struggled with no tv or WiFi but I welcomed that. I guess the problem is that I blindly followed all the advise. I was so sceptical but the doctor seemed offended that I couldn’t believe that this treatment would work. Some days he was friendly and amicable, other days short and sharp. He was struggling with a health problem himself so that didn’t help. As my days came to an end, he was still assuring me that all was well with me not to take my treatment at home, that he would be in touch all the way through. I asked if I could have a PET scan. This is the only true way to really see the disease. It is mostly a silent disease, picked up at autopsy. I guess I am lucky that I know it’s there so it can be monitored. I had my scans sent over from my hospital in England so the doc could compare and see the disease. Another trip to Kerala and a more expensive scan but not the same as I have in London. I usually follow a low carb diet and fast for 18 hours. A tracer is injected and you have to rest for an hour whilst it moves through the body and settles in the areas of inflammation. In Kerala I fasted, the injection was given and the scan immediately, so no time to take effect. Plus the electricity kept going down! The doc there told me immediately that all was well and even improved from the X-ray I had. I still had my doubts. I should have followed my instincts. I started to wean off my steroids very slowly whilst at Mekosha. I was very sad to leave but felt like the journey had been worth it. I still do in many ways. When I returned home it was straight into lock down and contact was lost with India and my hospital here as we all dealt with the pandemic. During the summer my hospital called to check on me and I told them the state of my medication and where I was with it. I should also say I was offered methotrexate when I got home but said I wanted to put it off as I didn’t want to lower my immune system during such a scary time, most people were being. Put off cancer treatments. I felt very alone and not sure what to do for the best. They sounded worried that I was on a low dose of steroids and nothing else and arranged for a PET scan in October. I felt completely well, so I was shocked when I got my results. It was the highest rate of inflammation ever for me, in my heart, lungs and lymph nodes. I was taken in for emergency steroid infusions and started the long road of high dose steroid treatment once more and methotrexate injections weekly for probably the rest of my life. I am lucky my heart is still functioning well. The reason I write all of this is, as brilliant as Ayurvedic treatment can be for some, once you have a chronic illness, it’s pretty much impossible to heal from it. I witnessed Doctor Maneesh telling others with auto immune disease such as lupus to come off their treatment and follow his medication. After realising all of this I contacted Elizabeth, and Doctor Maneesh. Life had altered dramatically for both as you can imagine but Maneesh found it unbelievable that I was ill again and wanted to help. I never heard from him again after that initial call. Not one person expressed concern which I found shocking, they just were probably worried about their own livelihoods etc. Which I understand, but I was left to face this alone, having spent thousand of pounds and going through such a rigorous treatment with absolutely no protection at the other side, I wrote to Ram Wasan the owner, who made all the right noises and corresponded back and forth for a few months promising to address my situation and that he took it seriously. And then like the others, contact stopped. So this is a warning really, if you are going to stay at Mekosha, please don’t put your life In the hands of this doctor if you have a chronic life threatening condition. We do not live In India, we cannot keep up the treatment we received at Mekosha including the food. We should not abandon our treatments in favour of Ayurvedic medicine without checking with our doctors. When I told mine about the treatment I had received he said it was like throwing peanuts at a fire. It just couldn’t control my disease, not when I have had it for so long. I’m truly disappointed in the owner and I believe all the staff have moved on now to start elsewhere as he didn’t protect them during this time. Anyone that has stayed at Mekosha will tell you it was the staff that made the trip. I will never forget them. But please let this be a warning that if you do put your life in other’s hands, as I did here, I had absolutely no support or compensation when things turned bad. I can’t try anymore alternative treatments, this is my last chance to keep inflammation at bay and it’s a long aggressive road of treatment which is hard to accept when you realise you paid out so much money to be helped, not made worse. It has taken me this long to write my review of Mekosha but I believe the full story has developed now. It will not be the same place it was without the staff. Amazing that doctors like Maneesh can continue. He would be struck off here. Not only did he send me for inferior scans but I had to pay for them and the medication, this in hindsight feels like a con. Ps the time I stayed is April, the list didn’t go back to February 2020.

Ms Walker, Greetings! You had booked your stay at Mekosha for a panchakarma package after the initial email exchange. Upon arrival the doctor met you and after the due consultation he administered the panchakarma therapies over a period of 21 days. The therapies were given in full and with utmost diligence. You left rather pleased with the care that you received at Mekosha. You indicated that the scan shall be done by your self after reaching home in UK. I must confess that i am rather nonplussed that you appear to be unhappy and that too after so many months. The pre existing ailment of so many years is being blamed upon the advice of the doctor whereas he did not give any contra advice. His report as submitted to Ms Elizabeth also clarifies the same. Well I I hope that you are feeling better and I wish you good health madam. In any case I remain available at +91 8800688344 for any further clarifications. Best Regards, Ram Wasan ram@mekosha.com PS- On a separate note the team at Mekosha is the heart to and soul of all that we offer and shall always continue to be so even when we resume operations. COVID has not been easy for anyone and we wish everyone luck.
