Eight days in Chiang Rai is very long. The hotel made the stay very relaxing and worth-while. We would spend one day going out siteseeing, and one day relaxing at the hotel. The staff has been awesome, the restaurant food was marvelous, the breakfast buffet abundant, and the rooms very comfortable. I am usually very critical with pros and cons of the places I review on here. There is very little complaints I have about the hotel. I do suggest that you consider your room selection carefully. We have three rooms at the hotel. My room is facing opposite of the pool. On that side of the hotel, one of their neighbors is raising birds and they squawk all day. The morning sun is nice to take the chill out of the air. My one friend has the pool side first floor. This is nice for easy access to the pool, but it gets quite warm with the sun in the afternoon. My other friend has a second floor pool view. He too has a warm room in the afternoon, but has a nice view. This has been such a pleasant stay. I highly recommend this place.

Stayed there for 2 nights. Outdoor area really nice, rooms simple. The shuttle to the night market is not free of charge. It’s 50 baht for return per person, which is ok. Breakfast very basic, but ok. Distance to the city center you can walk, use the shuttle or order a TukTuk. Staff was very friendly.

Almost everything here is great. Lovely grounds, clear pool and everything is exceptionally clean. Breakfast is very good and staff are pleasant.
The only downside is location and even that is not a huge issue. Walking to the centre would take about 15-20 minutes but there are also a number of shuttle times. These are mostly morning and evening with a gap in the middle. As I say, this may not be an issue for everyone but overall this is very good value.

We started off unsure as our first room was not what we considered but we were upgraded to a really nice one overlooking the pool. The bed was comfortable and the A/C was very good. We spent our mornings touring around and the afternoon cooling down in the pool. Only down point was the coffee offered at breakfast...first time we have been let down by the coffee in Thailand.

This hotel is in a very nice surrounding . Lots of trees , very peaceful . It is a little out of the way but it is only 80-100 bath to get a tuk tuk ride to town. Nice outdoor restaurant with good breakfast buffet . Pool is also in a nice surrounding .

What a great place this is. Not too small but not too big either. The Maryo has a cozy feel to it and an ideal place to unwind if you’re ever in Chiang Rai.

Check-in was an absolute breeze. I’d originally booked a Superior Room and after I started to unpack, an absolutely wonderful lady called Suvana asked me if I was happy with the room. She mentioned I could upgrade to a Deluxe room on the ground floor in another block if I wanted to. She took me down to B1 and as soon as I walked in I knew I absolutely had to upgrade. Room was spotless, really big and had everything I’d need. All for a measly 200 baht extra per night. Well worth the extra $8 per night ($4 each if you’re a couple) in my opinion.

The Deluxe Room I had was only 20 metres from the pool so that was a plus. Don’t forget, you’ll need to get a pool towel from reception. Nice big wardrobe that also contains your electronic safe. There’s also a funky free standing hanging tree for clothes or bags or whatever (see photo). You’ll find all the usual mod cons such as fridge, writing desk, kettle, soothing interior decorations, great A/C and yes, you guessed it, a nice firm bed.

The TV channel selection wasn’t all that great (not the hotel’s fault but more the satellite company) and I’m sure it will improve once more farangs start to visit Chiang Rai (CR). The bathroom is more than adequate and yet another shower that’s idiot-proof and one that consistently delivers awesome water temperature and pressure.

You have an outside balcony where you can enjoy a quiet coffee (or beer/wine) and reflect on life in quiet and peaceful surrounds. OK, my view was of the boundary wall but it was still cool to just sit there listening to the birds and insects singing their songs. Every now and then the local dogs would have a barking contest but no big deal. You gotta love Thailand eh? Best times were at night when it was dark and cool. You couldn’t help but remember where you were, how far away from home you were and how lucky you were to be sitting here in CR. I don’t want to encourage smoking in any way but your balcony will allow those smokers out there to puff away to their heart’s content.

Breakfast is buffet style down in the open air restaurant (15 metres from reception) between 7.00am to 9.30am. As usual there are loads of choices. Fresh fruit, porridge, cereals, toast, butter, jam, fried eggs already cooked sitting in a baine-marie, scrambled eggs, sausages, chinese sausage (my favourite), ham, fried rice, stir fried vegetables, french toast and these cute little heart-shaped pancakes. It should be more than enough for most people. I know my eyes were bigger than my stomach on the morning of my first breakfast. Most times you’re the only one there. Book in now before everyone discovers the Maryo and all this changes. There’s a smoking section on the right hand side as you walk in but non smokers needn’t worry. You can’t smell a thing and the smoke never reaches you inside the restaurant anyway.

I tried the restaurant for an evening meal on my last night. I played it safe and ordered some Spring Rolls as a starter and Pad Thai for the main course. It was absolutely delicious and so very filling. It was a little more expensive than outside on the street but for the quality and the convenience, you couldn’t beat the value. I think from memory it was just a tad over 200 baht. Good value indeed. While I was dining I was the only one there. Suvana wheeled over one of those portable A/C units and positioned it in front of me to the side which made my dining experience perfect. Thanks Suvana, you’re a sweetheart!

The hotel grounds are typically well kept as is the case in Thailand. Quite nice if you just want to sit and relax or maybe take some photos. The Maryo can arrange all the usual tours for you if you wish and they have loads of brochures in reception for you to look over. They also provide a free shuttle bus into CR city centre. Check out the attached photo for the timetable.

The Maryo is situated just off the main drag and within easy walking distance to Sankhongnoi Road which is also known as “Happy Street”. To get there is simple. Walk out of the hotel car park through the exit directly in front of reception and head to your left. This is Soi 5 and it will bring you to Sankhongluang Road. Instead of turning left or turning right (more on that later), simply walk directly across the road and down the little soi that’s straight in front of you. A few hundred metres and you get to the next main drag. Congratulations, you’re there! Not too hard was it? And it only took you 4 or 5 minutes!

Once you get there you’ll come across a 7-Eleven on the right hand corner so you’ll always have somewhere to get all those emergency supplies (water, chocolate, beer, whatever). “Happy Street” is where they hold the street markets every Sunday night (not to be confused with the night markets in the city centre on Saturday nights). Much the same as in Chiang Mai but less hassle, smaller scale, more time to shop and in the end, more enjoyable. Great place to go for those of you who need their necks, shoulders or feet massaged. There is a set up on the corner where there’s maybe (and this is a rough guesstimate) 30-40 massage chairs and most of them in use and mostly (if not all) occupied by locals. The night I was there I only saw about 5 or 6 farangs but that’s OK. It was pretty cool getting stared at all night. Obviously not as many farangs here in CR as there are down in CM.

Besides the usual stalls (much much cheaper than CM) you also have traditional Thai dancers (which always gets me emotional but I don’t know why), an orchestra of Thai seniors playing traditional music, buskers and even a Christian Evangelist delivering his message in Thai. Jeans 80 baht, dresses 3 for 100 baht, Tee Shirts 3 for 100 baht, single vision prescription glasses 300 baht and shoes from 20 to 200 baht. Whole fried fish (big) 20 baht and smoothies 10 baht. Donuts, fruit, vegies, drinks etc takes care of all that hard to get rid of “loose change” in your pocket. You gotta check it out people!

As mentioned earlier, once you walk out of the hotel car park through the exit directly in front of reception and head to your left you will arrive at Sankhongluang Road. You can either turn left and discover small “local” eateries and shops (no English, a challenge, cheap and loads of fun) or you could turn right and discover local CR life. For anyone who has been to Chiang Mai, you’ll notice how much quieter and “suburban” CR is. I for one loved it!

The Maryo doesn’t have a money change service so you’ll have to head to the money changer in town. I’m sure the free shuttle will be able to accommodate you in that regard. I needed to change some money and seeing as it was a slow day, Suvana got Pong (male driver) to run me into town and wait for me and then bring me back. Now that’s service for you. Thanks Suvana. Thanks Pong.

Mondays – I think most places are closed on Mondays. It might be their “day off” up here in CR. You might have to check that out and if that’s the case, either you can eat at the Maryo, find some local food carts along the way or you could get lucky and find a restaurant that’s open like I did. It’s on the opposite corner from the 7-Eleven on “Happy Street” and it’s pretty cheap. Had some Nam Prik Ong (spicy pork) and a drink for 90 baht. Can’t complain about that.

Final Tip - get to know Suvana and she’ll delight you with her stories. Her English is very, very good (she speaks a little French too from memory) as she spent 20 years living in Canada before coming back home to Thailand. Suvana will bend over backwards to help you out and because she’s the “Boss Lady”, she can make things happen. Her customer service is second to none. For example, when I was at breakfast on my check-out morning, she told me my room at the next hotel I was heading to wouldn’t be ready when I got there so she let me book out at 1.30 in the afternoon for no extra cost. Not many places would do that for you I can assure you. Rather than paying for a taxi to take me to the Nak Nakara (my next hotel) she got 2 of her young staff members to drive me there instead. And at no charge! Thank you Suvana for making my stay so much easier and more enjoyable. Hope you’re still there when I come back to CR for another visit.

So, all in all, I would most definitely recommend this place if you’re planning a visit to Chiang Rai. The standard of the facilities and service far exceed the money you pay for a room. The Maryo gets a big “thumbs up” from me. Take a chance and visit this place, you won’t regret it! Cheers.

We booked the resort for three days to explore the surroundings of Chiang Rai with our rental car. The location is a bit far from the city center but they offer a free shuttle to bring you to the different markets etc. The breakfast is very good, the pool is nice, and the rooms are clean and completely new! From price/value perspective one of the best hotels we stayed during our travels through Thailand!

This hotel is located a few minutes drive from the city center, away of all the fuzz, which for me is a plus. Anyway the hotel has a very convenient shuttle service providing transportation to the city center all day long.

The rooms are simple, but very comfortable and clean, and you will have everything you need for your stay, A/C working properly, refrigerator and TV with a good selection of channels.
The pool is quite nice too.

The restaurant is really good.
Excellent food all day long, including the breakfast buffet, all this with an excellent attention.

Speaking of attention, this is probably the best attention I have ever received in my life!
And this is what makes this hotel special. I never felt so at home in a hotel, like at the Maryo Resort. All the personnel was great, but I have to make a special mention to Suvanna.
She is a “know-it-all/ do-it-all” person at the hotel, and she definitely made our stay very special. I think all the hotels in the world would like to have a person like her on their staff.

I have absolutely NO DOUBT that I will (someday) return to Chiang rai and stay at the Maryo Resort again!!!

I stayed in this hotel with my girlfriend while we were travelling around Thailand, we stayed for 1 night while in Chiang Rai.

The hotel is very relaxing, peaceful and quiet. Brilliant if you want some time to relax away from the crowds. There is a very nice pool that we pretty much had to ourselves.

The room was very nice, the aircon was perfect for the 38 degree heat and the bed was very comfortable.

The hotel is about a year old so everything is in great condition and looks very modern.

The food was very nice (picture attached) and there was a huge choice for the buffet breakfast.

A free shuttle was provided to and from the city centre, the night market is a short drive away.

It's a shame we only had one night here.
