Detailed Reviews
We have been to Kalkan before, but wanted to see a bit of Turkey outside the tourist resorts - and we really landed lucky finding Owlsland!
Bezirgan is the "summer village" for Kalkan, it's 17 km away in the mountains, about 20 minutes' drive, but it's a whole different world.
Owlsland is an old village farmhouse restored as a hotel. It's very small, just 3 bedrooms, really well done, cosy, comfortable, and very clean. There's a huge balcony running the whole length of the building, and it was just paradise to lie there on piles of cushions and chill out. The local people in the village were very welcoming - we got asked in for tea and offered apples and grapes every time we went out for a walk.
And we have to mention Erol's cooking - each meal had dishes we've never seen in the restaurants, such a variety, and all delicious. We must have put on a stone each in the week we stayed.
For sighseeing it was great - we hired a car at the airport, and that gave us the freedom to go all round the area. It was fine and handy for the caost, we went to Kas, Kalkan and Patara, and it's not far from Xanthos either. Don't miss Elmali, an hour or so away in the mountains.
And there were no mozzies either - what more can you ask??

We spent two weeks travelling Turkey, and the five nights we spent at Owlsland were most definitely the highlight of the trip!
The surroundings are wonderful, a little piece of paradise, the welcome and hospitality were unsurpassed, the food was out of this world, and the company was great. The hotel is relaxing and comfortable, set in quiet gardens with almond and fig trees, it has the most delightful huge balcony with cushions to chill out on - bliss!
We had a lovely, relaxing, unforgettable holiday, and we will be back!

Having just made a booking to go back to Owlsland in Bezirgan (we stayed there in 2004) it occurred to me to write a review for tripadvisor so that other people can enjoy this little bit of paradise too!
For anybody who wants peace and quiet, beautiful country surroundings and outstanding food, with terrific hospitality and good company thrown in for good measure, then don't hesitate!
We took our three-year-old and our six-year-old, and they loved it. Space to play, the villagers just doted on them, and they loved the animals. We took some great snaps of them feeding the goats!
Pauline and Erol are great hosts, and we can't wait to get back.

We recently returned from a 2-week trip across Turkey and feel compelled to let people know that our *only* negative experience was at the hands of a Scottish woman, Pauline, who runs Owlsland. It’s NOT worth the trip (25 minute drive north of Kalkan along treacherous, winding roads) or the cost (112 TRL or $75 US per adult, per night) only to arrive at a remote location devoid of any interest unless your idea of a good time is animal husbandry or goat-beating. We experienced more interesting meals at every other stop on our itinerary (pan-fried chicken….hardly a Turkish specialty) where we didn’t have to deal with growling dogs or cats sitting on the dining table hovering over our food.
We reserved a double room and she put us in a room with 2 twin beds - even after we pointed out every other room was empty and we were on our honeymoon (she apparently didn’t take it well when we called earlier in the week to change our reservation from 2 nights to 1 night)! She barely greeted us and answered our questions in one-syllable grumbles leaving us feeling extremely uncomfortable. There was no soap in the bathroom, but she did leave out exciting reading materials like Scottish SPCA and old issues of Organic Seed Catalog. And forget plush Turkish towels – we were handed towels that felt like they’d been used to dry her goats!
We fled as soon as we paid her in the morning and hoped she didn’t take her frustrations out on anyone else! This was NOT the experience we went out of our way for!!!

This is the place to stay if you want to experience what life must be like in rural Turkey (with the added comforts of en-suite bathrooms and running hot water!). The guest rooms are in a converted village house surrounded by grape vines, fig trees and the orchard. Erol's elderly Mum lives next door and there are various neighbours coming and going to work the fields.
Erol and Pauline are great hosts, making sure you are comfortable and helping with tips about the area, walking directions and local gossip. The village itself is well worth an explore.
As others have said, Erol is a great cook which is probably just as well because eating in is really the only option - it's a good 20 minute drive down the mountain to Kalkan if you want a wider choice of food. Having said that, the full-board option is not particularly cheap. We certainly found better value on our travels.

We had booked a night at owlsland as part of our walking holiday on the Lycian Way. And after a long uphill climb from Kalkan we arrived on the lush plateau at Berzigan. Pauline, Erol and the many cats and dogs gave us a lovely welcome. Our accommodation was beautiful in a renovated family farmhouse with spacious rooms full of charm and character. We particularly loved the sitting platform with comfortable cushions and plenty of space to lounge and rest our aching feet, we instantly changed our itinery and booked another night. The hosting was exemplary with bountiful information supplied about the local area and lively discussions about Turkish politics. Pauline and Erol booked ahead our next two nights on the trail giving us further rural adventues. The food was delicious and plentiful, the landscape stunning in Spring. We're definitely coming back! Thank you so much! James, Sophie and Sarah

Happened upon Owlsland as one of our places to stay when we walked the Lycian Way, and were absolutely blown away by how great it was! The beauty of the valley and the guesthouse was just so unexpected, a real oasis. Welcome was warm and friendly, lovely rooms, lots of nice hot water for (much-needed) showers, comfy beds, and we appreciated the wood stoves because it was cold at night up there in the mountains. Brilliant dinner, best we had in Turkey, and a marvellous breakfast outside i the morning. And added bonus points to Pauline for being willing to give us breakfast really early so's we could start walking!
It was the high spot of what was a wonderful walk, and one night wasn't long enough, so we intend to go back.

+1
We enjoyed our one night stay at Owlsland. Erol & Pauline were very warm and welcoming. We enjoyed a wonderful home cooked dinner around the kitchen table with the other guests. Owlsland was quiet and peaceful -it was great to look out the bedroom window and see the goats running around. We ate fresh figs right off the tree-delicious.

We happened on Owlsland when looking for a place to stay with some friends. We wanted somewhere beautiful, peaceful and unspoiled, with interesting flora and fauna. This is it! In addition, you get fabulous cooking from Erol, lively conversation from Pauline and very attractive, wonderfully comfortable and carefully presented accommodation. The locals are extremely friendly and seem delighted to have visitors. We were bewitched by it.
