This was my third visit to Chanters, I had last stayed in 2015 when Richard, the proprietor, took immense pride in his establishment and offered a warm and friendly environment in which to stay. Unfortunately, I don’t believe that the property has been maintained in any manner since my last visit 8 years ago, it emits an aura of neglect and is a property that is no longer looked after or loved. Our party had booked four double rooms – for 5 people. My daughter and I had 2 double rooms next to the pool. Unfortunately, the swimming pool looked very uninviting and dirty, the surrounding garden overgrown and neglected. The garden furniture covers, and patio furniture covers were stained and dirty. The reception area fared no better with a large chest freezer positioned behind the bar. Upon arrival we ordered a meal which took about 70 minutes to arrive, after which one of our group suffered from a severe bout of Gastroenteritis. The paintwork in our rooms was awful, cracked and peeling. The ceilings were water stained and there was a constant stream of ants climbing the bedroom wall, floor to ceiling. I had a very large spider living in my wardrobe. The bathroom was incredibly dated, the towels were unusable, thankfully we had bought our own. Both our rooms had hot water, unfortunately one of our group’s rooms didn’t. My room had a TV which had a two-pin plug which didn't fit in to the 3 pin U.K socket. There was no kettle, and no tea making facilities. There were no glasses either. After requesting a kettle and mugs from reception, these were delivered promptly, however the kettle had a two-pin plug and so did not work. They did not have an alternative. My daughter was tired after the long drive from Lusaka and wanted to leave, it was late, there were two conferences in Livingstone and hotel rooms were in short supply. We had to stay! The bed looked clean, but I was too frightened to pull back the bottom sheet or pillowcases and inspect further. The lock on the door did not work. The were was one plus point - the aircon did work. We had ordered breakfast for 9.00am it arrived at 9.10am with an apology and toast so hard it could have been toasted the day before. There were tea and juices. We cut short our planned stay. We did discuss our concerns with the management who said there was a plan to renovate in the future, (whenever that may be?) We were so disappointed, we had looked forward to our return visit to Chanters, but instead of a dream break it turned out to be something of a nightmare. …
