Located slightly towards outside of town but manageable on foot from the JR Takayama station in approx. 15-20 mins. The ryokan provides free shuttle to/from the JR train station so do email them in advance to enquire about this. As we arrived slightly early before noon, we decided to walk it. The ryokan looks very quaint and pretty. The man...

Located about 15 minutes walk away from the station, part of the way is uphill. A good welcome from the hosts, who could speak a high level of English. The room was a very large size, by Japan standards. Comfortable beds made up on the tatami floor mates were very comfortable which made for a good nights sleep. The food...

Located on the quieter part of town but close enough to the town. Breakfast and dinner was great. Plentiful. They are able to accommodate our request for no beef easily. The onsen was excellent. We ended going 3 times a day. Friendly staff

The property is nicely decorated with very interesting items - sake glasses, vases, bowls etc. and felt very homely. All the staff there were very friendly and helpful. Dinner and breakfast both included a huge spread of food. The rooms had heated tables which were very comforting for the cold winter. Location is a little far from the train station...

We had a lovely 2 night stay here. We arranged for a pickup from the station when we arrived since we had some bags, thankfully as there's a killer uphill stretch just in front of the ryokan. Our room was decent sized, very clean and there's also a toilet in the room. We were on the highest floor, but on...

A wonderful stay at this ryokan: the staff, kaiseki and breakfast were just outstanding. it was the first time we slept on futons and we were surprised how comfortable they were. The room was light and airy, super clean bathroom and the onsen was superb. We only spent one night and wished we had booked for 3 as the ryokan...

We enjoyed our 2-night stay at Yamakyu. The futons were comfy to sleep in. The food was delicious and plentiful, hotsprings was included, the price was right. Yamakyu is a 20 minute walk from the JR station, however the direction was straightforward and was not a problem for us. Highly recommended!

This place was outstanding. From the staff to the facilities to the food, we absolutely loved our stay. The rooms with tatami mats were neat, and the bedding for the night magically appeared every night as we went for dinner. It was comfortable too. The hot onsen bath experience was quite something. Once we got over the initial strangeness of it...

A truly wonderful experience. We stayed for one night for ¥18,360 on booking.com. I was a bit nervous beforehand because I had spent a lot of money earlier on our trip for an onsen ryokan in Hakone, where I felt that aside from the private bath, it was not a good value. However, as soon as we arrived at Yamakyu,...

This was our first experience with a traditional Japanese inn. My husband in particular was taken aback by the barebones room. By the time we'd had a bath and dinner, though, we were blown away. Some of the best food of our trip was here. We slept like babies on our futons and learned to relax Japanese style in the...
