Whilst set in a beautiful setting, the Ryokan is very old and musty. Our first time sleeping on futons and bathing in a public onset was a highlight and our hosts were lovely. However we found the language barrier really came into play when our bill was disputed on our departure. Getting to and from the ryokan was also costly... More

Fabulous gardens, 200 plus year history, really makes you feel like you're in the old Japan.Very tranquil and relaxing. Our room was large, looking over a garden. We had western style pillows which made my sleep peaceful, the onsen is spacious, but the outside one is very basic and no garden view. Our dinner was typically huge kaiseki style, with lots... If you want a true Japanese Ryokan then this is the place to stay. You feel like you have been transported back in time to old Japan. It is a distance out of town, but that adds to the feel of the place. The lady gave us a tour of the place and tried to use Google translator to tell... More

We checked in on a Thursday and stayed 2 nights. We had to pay for a taxi - 2,800 yen from Kanazawa station as the next bus was not leaving until 17:40 and the wait was too long. There are only 2 buses a day from Kanazawa Station (14:00 & 17:40), from bus stop 4 at the MAIN entrance with... More

Gorgeous, traditional ryokan in a peaceful rural location just outside Kanazawa (the main sights are an easy 20-25 minute bus ride away). Rooms are spacious and comfortable. Good onsen and superb food for breakfast and dinner. One of our party is vegetarian and the kitchen did an excellent job of adapting to this, with no fuss. Staff are friendly and... More

Excellent staff, very focused and doing everything to help you enjoy you stay. Also a very nice onsen with lovely Shiseido products. We had an amazing dinner -the food just kept coming. Best ryokan experience! Note: Kanazawa is not very close, you have to take the bus or a cab to get there.

Spacious room, great amenities, hearty breakfast, homely ambience, easy accessibility. The public bath is another highlight, there's no shower in my room so no choice had to go for it but indeed a great experience.

Motoyu Ishiya is a beautiful, traditional Japanese Ryokan just outside of Kanazawa. While Ishiya is nestled in the woods, it is a 15 minute drive from all of the sites in Kanazawa. The food was excellent, very traditional Japanese fare. The staff, although limited in English, was extremely attentive and super-helpful. The rooms are spacious, with comfy futons on tatami... I am truly fortunate to have spent 3 nights with my wife and 2 young girls at Ishiya. My youngest girl said one of the hosts would be a "great grandmother". There's no wi-fi; English is limited; yet communication wasn't an issue. This Ryoken has had time to hone its craft, garden and food. The setting is perfect. As we... More

There was an antique charm about the place: it had obviously seen better days but nevertheless managed to maintain a sense of style and elegance. There were some beautiful 'hina' dolls decorating the halls which dated from the Meiji Period, and one or two other art works which added to the atmosphere. There was even a Buddhist altar with a...
