We stayed in a twin room which was adequate with a small bathroom. The room could do with some updating.
The hotel was quiet and the onsen was much needed after a long wet day of hiking.
The plus point if this hotel is the food. Dinner was excellent with multiple courses of Japanese local dishes. Breakfast had a wide selection of Japanese and Western food.
The staff are friendly and helpful.
It is a very lovely property and the staffs are also very helpful and polite. We had a river facing Japanese style room and it was fabulous. The room size is very good and there was sufficient space to keep our 2 bags and 2 backpacks. There is a separate sitting area with a balcony overlooking the river and mountains. We also had special food requirements which were catered to perfectly.
It was raining during our stay, so the staff provided umbrellas and rain boots which was convenient. We booked the private bath for 1 hour and it was a nice experience. They did not give free late checkout, but agreed to keep our luggage and also allowed us to use the public bath if we wanted. We were unable to use the public bath since it would open only at 12.30pm, which was late for us.
Our overall experience was very good and we would gladly recommend this property to folks visiting Kamikochi.
The hotel staff are friendly and mainly helpful. However, the hotel is in absolute need of a complete makeover. Looks almost derelict on the outside. Not quite so bad inside.
Our room smelt of dead rats. The manager said it was the new mats! We asked to change rooms but were told the only option was a room with no views and no bathroom! Interesting as the hotel had many vacancies.
The food. 6/10 for what it looks like. 1/10 for experience. Cold / tasteless / stale.
We didn’t let the dire hotel spoil our enjoyment of the truly stunning environment - but choose your hotel carefully.
We had booked the most expensive room, a corner room facing the river and it was money well spend. We got a royal treatment from the staff with superb in room dinners while enjoying the fantastic river and mountain view.
The Onsen is quite nice, so we also spend quite some time relaxing in the warm pools after our daily hikes.
We hope to come back some day
Dinner was DELICOUS! The mixed appetizers (sushi, pickled vegetables, tofu) were very tasty even though we were not 100% sure what we were eating. Next followed fish and soba noodles, tempura and this yummy tofu in a pot and also rice and miso soup. We could not fault a thing Ask for dessert to take away if you are full, we were! Make sure you wear your yukata to dinner, much more comfortable than clothes. Breakfast was mainly japanese style but they also had some breads, eggs and sausage which was a relief as I love Japanese food but it is not my favorite for breakfast. The hotel's decor is slightly dated but that to me was part of its charm but the rooms/bathrooms/onsen were very clean. The staff were very friendly and helpful (gave advice on catching buses to Shirahone Onsen - there are only two a day which we had not realised and also the importance of booking your ticket and a seat!) and made us feel very comfortable and had a good level of English especially one of the Front Desk staff and one of the gentlemen in the Restaurant. The views from the hotel are stunning and it is a perfect location for exploring the main simple walks in Kamikochi. My only comment is that it is 15-20 minutes walk from Kamikochi Bus Station - get off at Imperial Hotel and walk down from there and save yourself some energy for other walks!!
I would like to thank the hotel staff for providing towels to stop the bleeding and calling an ambulance.
thank you very much!
"Mornings are very busy. It is much quieter later in the day. Try the mountain tracks. Very few people."Read full review

"Choose a River View for sure...Lovely lovely views in both the morning and the evening."Read full review
"Definitely go for the river view. The mountain view I think would just look into the side of a hill (though didn't go into those rooms, obviously)."Read full review
