We stayed here as we wanted to spend two days to hike the different trails. We bought the Alps Crossing Pass at 5000 yen since we entered Kamikochi from Matsumoto and left via Takayama. Coming by train from Nagano, we could hop on to the Kamikochi Line at Platform 7 without exiting to buy the tickets. We bought this Pass at Shin-shimashima station. There were two buses to accommodate all of us at Shin-shimashima station to Kamikochi.
On arrival, we hiked a circular route from bus terminal to Myojin pond and then back to bus terminal by another enjoyable route. By staying at this hotel, we could hike from Taisho Pond to Kappa Bridge the next morning.
Two outstanding features stood out during our stay here.
1) During breakfast, we could sit next to the window and look out to the greenish-blue Taisho Pond in front of the mountain ranges. We also access the pond during sunrise without the crowds. The walk from Taisho Pond to Kappa Bridge is also very scenic.
2) The dinner was a pleasant surprise with so much to eat. The food was tasty and not overly salty. I had four different kinds of fish as I did not eat beef. Breakfast was equally good.
We did walk out at night to view the stars in the sky.
Highly recommend a stay in Kamikochi to do more trails.

My wife and I spent 2-3 days here over the summer. While getting here on public transport is definitely a journey and a headache, once you're here, this is an amazing, relaxing, serene place to stay for a weekend. The hotel is a bit older, but there are very few options if you want to stay close to the park, and this resort is a great choice. It's right next to a bus stop heading to and from the park, situated right along the river/pond, and it has a great walking trail if you'd prefer leaving early and hiking alone on the beautiful trail. The hotel was comfortable and the staff was friendly. The large dinner meals they included in the price were very filling, but definitely more "authentic" then we were expecting. We love most Japanese dishes, but the lake fish "char" was a bit too much for us. Oh well, there was plenty more to eat!

We purchased the Standard Twin Room, but we made sure that it was facing the Taisho Pond. We had some rain, so it was great to be able to sit in the room with the window open and comfortably watch the rains roll by. If we had planned the trip during perfect weather, the Mountain side would be fine for a discount, since we wouldn't have been in the room as much.

We never actually used the Onsen spa, since they have separate rooms for men and women and we wanted to enjoy it together. We spent most of our time hiking and relaxing outdoors anyway.

Kamikochi is popular with day-trippers, but I stayed here because the view of Taisho Pond in the morning mist at 5-6 AM is amazing. Both dinner and breakfast are elaborate, which is nice. I was satisfied except for the fact that the large bath is small and can only fit about 5 people. If you want to keep the price down, I recommend the mountain side.

It all depends what you pay. The location of the hotel is good within the park, though it is a ways away from the bridge and Kamikochi bus terminal. The hotel is basic. You feel like you're somewhere in Alaska so it's ok that everything is concrete except you are an hour from Matsumoto. The mattresses are hard and you could use the pillows to defend yourself against any bears or intruders. If you stay during peak season you'll pay over $250 per night for the privilege. It's worth 50.

We stayed in a Western-style room with a view of Taisho Pond for two nights, but the mattress on the bed was very uncomfortable, and both my husband and I had back pain. The mattress was very bad.

There was no selection for breakfast, so we couldn't eat it. My husband, who is a foreigner, was not impressed with the bread and other fixed foods that were brought to him. Dinner was either bland or strong, and the taste was extreme. Strong foods sting my tongue. White rice was delicious.

situated at the scenic Taisho Pond, right next to the first bus stop of Kamikochi. rooms are a bit dated, but so are most accommodations in Kamikochi. staff here speaks very good English. dinner of the first night was just mediocre, but second night was so much better. overall not a luxury hotel, but location is great and reasonably priced (comparing to other accommodations in Kamikochi).

Well, all the hotels in Kamikochi are overpriced, this one seems a bit reasonable because it has the best lake view. Room are simple and small, don't expect much on breakfast and dinner, then you will find it ok. Must get the lake view room, well worth it. Try to wake up early in the morning to see the breathe taking view.

We stayed here for 2 nights in October for the foliage season. The hotel is by the lake, beautiful view from their restaurant and some lakeview rooms. Cheaper rate than some hotels right at Kappabashi, however the experience is wonderful. This view is way better than the Myojin Pond.

Hotel rate is inclusive of breakfast and dinner. We are very well-fed. Cannot be happier with the food and view.

Staff are excellent. Mr. Mesaki at front office is very friendly and attentive. He can speak English well so we asked him many questions about Kamikochi. He recommended some hiking trails for us. Other staff at the restaurant are very polite and attentive.

Room was great! Well sized. Well equipped. This is considered the "newest" hotel in kamikochi even though it's 60 years old. I'm sure they did some refurbishment and maintenance, because the hotel looks fine.

You can walk from hotel to Kappabashi along the river for about 1 hour, or take a bus for less than 10 mins. Beautiful scenery around.

Highly recommended!

** We stayed from 19 to 21 October. Peak season for foliage. Beautiful scenery.

Staying at Taishoike hotel is worth it for the service and the food alone! All of the staff are outstanding but the manager Masaki especially. He speaks great English and goes out of his way to help and enquires about your day. The food was really amazing - we had a gastronomic feast every night.
We stayed in both a western and Japanese style room. The Japanese style was much more comfortable and had views, but otherwise the rooms were clean and comfortable. Taishoike is a 40 minute walk or 7 minute taxi/bus ride from the main Kamikochi area but we didn't mind that. It was quiet and the location on the lake beautiful. We loved this place and couldn't recommend it enough!

Yes, it’s pricey but you get what you pay for:
• Staying right in the National Park, with full lake view from the room. Just outside of the hotel are trails to key attractions in Kamikochi. We saw wild monkeys wandering around in our evening walk.
• Dinner & breakfast was included in our package and we were fed way more than we could stomach.
• Our room was not very big. Nor was the décor fancy. But it’s clean & well-furnished.
• Surprisingly, the staff spoke very good English and was very friendly & helpful.
• We particularly like their “concierge service”. At a mere 100 yen per piece, they helped us transport our luggage to Kamikochi Bus Terminal. So, we could pick them up at the storage center (the storage fee for our suitcase of moderate size was 500 yen) at the end of the day after our hike and then took the bus directly from there to our next stop.

True, with such good bus services around the region, it’s not a must to stay a night in the mountain. But doing it allowed us to see Taisho lake at dawn & dusk, when the view was the most gorgeous. We’re glad we did it.
