Detailed Reviews
My wife and I wished to do some hiking in the Japanese Alps, but without camping or multi day trails. Although day trips from Matsumoto are possible, it's a lot of travel, and after a hike, getting into the onsen is far superior to getting on a buses and trains. Accommodations in Kamikochi are for the most part expensive spas, resorts, and quite pricy. Alternatives included camping or hiking up to mountain huts
The Alpen hotel has two dorm rooms with reasonable rates which were a reasonable alternative to a traditional tatami mat room, with some drawbacks. We were uncertain if staff did not seem used to western travelers or if the single hikers who normally stay in the dorms are on a different plan, but the waiters actually seemed a bit nervous to approach us. The dorms were split male and female, so we were not able to hang out in each other's sleep space. (Beds were small but comfortable and private). This (separation) turned out not to be a big deal, as the common floor space of the hotel is extensive, including seating areas and TV lounge on two floors. There was also entertainment (a magician) for kids.
Food was gourmet, multiple courses, and traditional, and I would say was a plus. Lack of English speaking staff, so no help with trip or hiking planning, was a small minus, as there is so much easily available hiking information online, or through the Visitors center just over the other side of the Kappa Bashi.
In future I might consider heading up to the mountain huts, but for this brief trip to the Alps region, this was a good way to stay in comfort with great meals, right at the trail heads, without a high cost hotel room.

This is an amazing location. The mountains abound in an amazing river setting.
The hotel is full service and is more keenly priced for an expensive destination in general.
We stayed in a tatami room which was nice and trad. The hotel served full (20 course, not quite but you get the drift) dinner in the room. If you are not Japanese just eat everything that is placed in front of you. It is all tasty. Don't be afraid.
Take the advice of the counter staff when choosing which peaks you will climb. They know their stuff. Get the lunch box to take with you to and charge your camera before walking. You won't be back till dark.
Just go, leaf changing season is best. Once you get beyond the 10 min walking paths, you be pleasantly alone.

There is a hotel and a dormitory, which need to be distinguished. Our comments are about the hotel, which we thought was excellent. First impressions are not great as you approach and the inside, which is decorated in dark colours seems a little gloomy. However, if you set this to one side, virtually everything else is great: the location, right by the river, within ten minutes walk of the bus terminal and with walking from the doorstep; the rooms, which are cavernous by Japanese standards; the staff, which are lovely and helpful; and the restaurant, where the food is good and the servers attentive and friendly. There is even occasional evening entertainment, a guitarist on one evening and an alpenhorn player on another (it is twinned with Grindelwald, the Swiss ski resort) and a gift shop with interesting food stuffs, amongst other things. Certainly, we have come across brighter rooms, even better restaurants etc but taken as a whole we thought it was a great package. If you are here when the leaves are changing colour you will be bowled over by the spectacle.

Location gorgeous,Food good and staff helpful. Spacious room. Did not feel it justified the money we paid for it .Would have liked the option of having a shower rather than an onsen. Signposting was poor if you are looking for something in English.

Wanted to stay overnight to experience the scenery and walks without the throngs of day trippers. Hotel has ski lodge feel, nestled in forest near river. Expensive but worth it to see the autumn colours on walks and the Japanese dinner and breakfast were a great experience, beautifully presented, fresh and tasty. Best miso soup of the trip. Forward suitcases to the hotel if you have time, we came straight from the airport!. Travel light, the walk from the bus station isn’t made for suitcases. You can get a taxi if you are early or late in the day, but no taxi during the peak times. Use the main path, not the one near the river if you are wheeling suitcases. The transport to Matsumoto, train then bus was smooth, as well documented online. The scenery from Matsumoto and then to Takayama also had great scenery and autumn colours.

We stayed one night in a traditional tatami room at the alpen hotel. The European alpine theme in the lobby gave the hotel some charm, and this extended to the large rooms, nice onsen and in room bathroom. The included meals were a good introduction to upscale Japanese cuisine, with plenty of memorable dishes. And don't miss the evening entertainment in the lobby. The hotel proprietor lead an entertaining variety show including Swiss alpine horn and trivia!
If possible stay overnight at kamikochi, to enjoy the views without the crowds and unwind.

We stayed 3 nights at this hotel. Overall, it is a well maintained place. The location is convenient just a few minutes walk from the bus station with great views on the surrounding mountains. We stayed in a more traditional Japanese room where you sleep on the floor on small futon. Not the most comfortable but I experienced worst in Japan. They seem to have many type of rooms. The public bath is ok. The major positive aspect of this hotel was the food. It was a real pleasure to taste so many different things at each meal with no repetition over the 3 days we were there. I would return to the same place if I were to go back to Kamikochi.

We stayed at the Kamikochi Alpen Hotel on either side of a two-day walk in the mountains. The welcome was friendly and the room was spacious and clean. The evening meals were excellent – served kaiseki style. The communal (single sex) bathing was a bit challenging for us Brits!
We would thoroughly recommend walking more than an hour away from Kamikochi, where the tourist numbers dwindle. We walked up to the Karasawa Valley and stayed overnight there in a mountain hut. As it was the end of the season, we saw very few other walkers and had a dorm room to ourselves.

I booked a hiker's bed but to my delight i had the whole room to myself. I took one of the 4 beds available since the other 3 beds was not occupied. Location wise was just a stone throw from the famed Kappa Bridge. You have to take the left turn from the the bridge and walk about 200m to the hotel.
The breakfast was awesome. Felt like a full kaiseki set which is fit for a king. Courteous and polite were seen from the receptionists all the way to the waitresses et al. Very typical Japanese style and mannerism

Located 5 minutes from the bas station at Kamikochi. I stayed the room with two beds and tatami place attached. It was large enough for 3 of us. 2 can sleep in bed and 1 in the tatami part. We all did their Shiatsu massage after 5-hour hike to Tokuzawa and the therapist Kusanagi-san was amazing.

You can book at its official website which link may be found on the Kamikochi tourism website. If you can't find the booking page, maybe you need to change the language to Japanese. There is nothing tricky, so don't worry. Anyway, you only need to pay upon check-out. Please note that the "official" latest check-in time is 5pm, which you need to indicate on booking. Good luck and enjoy!
Absolutely. Just 400m from the bus stop. About 10min walk
