Awanoyu is a fantastic ryokan experience at an onsen. You probably are familiar with onsen already if you are looking at this review because Shirahone Onsen is hard to get to. There are buses from Matsumoto but we came in a rental car. Awanoyu is also a rare mixed gender bath. Shiraone (white bone) onsen features a very milky white... More

We visited 2 onsens in the area. Awanoyu in Shirahone on the way to Takayama and then Hiranoyu on the way back from Takayama to Matsumoto. We visited as day onsen customers. The onsen advertises a giant onsen pool with milky white waters. But the pool is mixed meaning both men and women nude. I'm not prudish in the slightest... More

Came here only for the day outdoor hot spring. Some info said the outdoor hot spring is only open to visitors on weekends but I checked the calendar on the hotel website - it's actually open most weekdays so I called to confirm beforehand and it was open (本館 大野天風呂) even though we went there on a Monday. There's another... More

This place is quite beautiful and the onsen water is really interesting. Unfortunately the mixed rotenburo water was only body temperature which resulted in us being rather cold and leaving the mixed bath quite early. This was a shame since we were 3 men and 2 women. We had read about the water temperature but didn't expect us to feel... More

Pretty close to Kami-kochi (40 mins. bus ride) and 2 hours from Matsumoto. For those who want to enjoy a nice onsen, Shirahone (means "white bone") is a nice alternative. You might not like the low water temperature (37-38 degrees Celsius), but the water quality makes you warm. The outdoor bath is kon-yoku (mixed bath) but special bathing suits are... More

My husband and I had a really wonderful 3 days at this ryokan. They upgraded our room without extra charge. The room was absolutely beautiful and looked out on a forest of green. The food and service were outstanding. Shuko took amazing care of us during our stay. The baths were lovely, deeply relaxing. The outdoor one is cooler, the... More

Awanoyu is an interesting mix. The hotel itself is lovely - probably the best Japanese style rooms I've stayed in. they are clean, modern and stylish, with all the amenities you would expect in this price range. Having stayed in many ryokan over the years, accomodation-wise at least, this was the standout. Awanoyu falls down in other areas, however. Firstly,... More

You will reach this hidden treasure after two hours drive from Matsumoto along the beautiful scenic mountain drive. The bus service is available in winter season. Awanoyu Ryokan is famous for mixed bathing - outdoor milky bath with beautiful natural surroundings which brings colours in each season. The scene of snow among the greenery around the bath was just breath-taking... More
