This traditional hot spring inn is wonderful. Rooms, bath and meals. There is a shuttle bus to and from Matsumoto station. They even offer a shuttle service into the famous natural beauty spot of Kamikochi

I had a wonderful stay. Staff were very helpful. Excellent English spoken by Tomoko. Food was amazing— pretty much the best meals I had in Japan. Price is very reasonable considering the accommodation. I enjoyed the room, though travelers should expect it is simple and traditional. Foreign travelers should understand they are staying in a Ryokan, so some adjustment is required. Be early for everything by five minutes lol! Note that the ryokan is located a few miles away from Kamikochi park, so you have to plan your trips to the park. They operate a free shuttle to the park, but only at specific times. There is a free return shuttle but you may have to ride a bus to the spot to pick that up. The onsen was amazing. There are multiple different onsen, indoor and outdoor. It was a lovely experience.

Highly recommended!! Everything here is surprisingly nicer than we imagined! We reserved the 2:45 pm free 75-minute shuttle from Matsumoto Station's West Exit by emailing the hotel directly - very friendly and quick response (in Japanese). The hotel shuttle saves you the train+bus fare of 2450 yen one way or 4550 yen round trip.

If you're taking the bus yourself and want to walk from the Nakanoyu (中の湯) bus stop, apparently it's 45 minutes uphill to the hotel - but there's a shop nearby where the staff can arrange pick-up to the hotel anytime (a 10-minute drive).

The ryokan is up in the mountains facing the mountains, at the end of Curve#7 up some very windy roads and many many tunnels. It's got 100 years of history but it's been renovated so it feels traditional yet seems quite new and very clean - a great place with a spacious lobby looking out onto the mountains shrouded in clouds! Wifi is not fast but available, just in the lobby though. Go out & walk up the road for a few minutes to Curve#8 to see some more mountains and valley. We saw some wild monkeys in the trees too!!

Our room's small but nice including a toilet & sink - with Japanese style futons set up for you at night. There are 24-hour indoor & outdoor hot springs; men and women switch sides at 10 pm but both look into the forest with robust fresh mountain air. The outdoor one closer to the lobby has an amazing mountain view! There's also a small indoor private/family one on a first-come-first-serve basis, but it doesn't look that nice.

Decent multi-dish dinner at 6 or 6:30 pm and breakfast at 7 or 8 am. With advance notice, they substituted seafood dishes for one of us who doesn't eat fish. Very good service & friendly helpful staff here! They also provide maps of the area highlighting the 1500m-above-sea-level hiking trails with time estimates. The entrance to Mount Yake (Yakedake 焼岳) trails is right by the hotel. It's about 10-15 degrees cooler than Tokyo, just perfect in 35-degree early September.

Free shuttles leaving the hotel at 8 or 9 am bound for Kamikochi Bus Terminal takes 20 minutes down to Taisho Pond(大正池)which is about an hour walk to Kappa Bridge, very close to the Bus Terminal - many shops there. The walk is mostly flat with many scenic spots! From there, the loop to Myojin Bridge and back takes 2 hours and is pleasant but not quite as scenic. It costs 300 yen to see Myojin Pond - there's a restaurant there. It took us an extra hour to stop & take photos along the way, so 4 hours in total for both walks. The hotel shuttle leaving the Bus Terminal back to Matsumoto Station is at 12:20 pm, arriving at 1:40 pm.

I was looking for a place to stay for our visit to Kamikochi - I agonised over staying in Kamikochi itself or somewhere else - and I am glad that I stayed at this place. The bath (onsen) is really nice with a great view. The meals were delicious. We didn't have a car but they have a pick up service from Matsumoto station which is almost 70 minutes away. The next day, they dropped us off at Kamikochi bus terminal. What a great service! We certainly saved the transport cost. The staff was nice and friendly. The only downside was that they don't have a fridge in the room. I bought a small bottle of local sake in Matsumoto but I couldn't chill it. I'd love to stay at this place again and do big walks in the area.

We stayed here to climb Mt. Yakedake.

I thought this place is small, old inn for hikers. So I was surprised when I arrived there - modern, big building. Fantastic course dinner and very good Onsen. The room was very clean.

We could leave our car in their parking while hiking.
If you are leaving early, they will prepare boxed breakfast (riceballs).
Mt. Yakedake is worth climbing. Descend to Kamikochi side is recommended.
If you Yakedake is too much for you, visit Kamikochi at least!

I have just escaped from this place. It will appeal to some but not to us. The place is spartan and lacking the most basic comforts. I get that it is a traditional Japanese place, but having no chairs or showers in a very basic room with no wifi felt very uncomfortable.
The whole place felt like it was run for the benefit of the hotel itself. When we requested a late check out on the morning we left, this was denied. Apparently we should have asked the night before. This was in spite of the reception knowing that we could not leave early as we were booked on their shuttle bus to Matsumoto at 12. Breakfast and lunch demanded prompt arrival at 8am and 6 pm. Being five minutes late we were summoned down twice.
The hotel seemed to appeal to Westerners who enjoyed walking around and attending dinners in their kimonos. So kitsch and faintly ridiculous. The food itself was disappointing.
The only bright note in our stay was the assistance of the young Japanese girl ( I think she was called Tomoko) She spoke excellent English and was very helpful.
Avoid this place which is massively overpriced and staffed by unhelpful people more interested in themselves and their myriad rules rather than their guests.

I'd chance upon Nakanoyu on Tripadvisor and to my pleasant surprise, the prices are quite resaonable as comapared to the rest of the Hotel at Kamikochi area, together with an Onsen, Half board to boot!

I'd initially booked a 2N stay but extended to 3 nights instead beacause its too beautiful there. The staff there are so welcoming to their guests whom are mostly japanaese but they have 1 or 2 that speaks english as well. Im so glad I chanced upon this hidden gem!

The good:
- Amazing hospitality

- Comfortable rooms

- Great onsens,  including one outside if you want to bathe while enjoying the fresh mountain air. Onsen is available 24/7, so you can bathe the day away at your leisure.

- Very accessible to Kamicochi, even without a car. There is one shuttle bus to town every morning, which leaves at approximately 8am. To return to the accommodation, catch town bus to bottom of the road that accommodation is on. They will pick you up in their mini van from there - any time of day.

- Great view

The not so good:
- WiFi is sooooooo slow and only available in the lobby.

These next two are part of the Japanese Ryokan experience, so not a criticism, just something to be aware of if you don't think they will work for you:

- Breakfast is served at a set time each day (approximately 7:30am). Staff pack up your bed and transition your room to a sitting room while you're at breakfast and set beds back up after dinner in the evening. You can request that they leave  your beds set up, however, if you're the kind of person who likes to get up at your leisure and have breakfast, this may not be the right place for you.

- The menu for breakfast and dinner are pre-determined, meaning you do not get to order off the menu. You can, however,  let them know of any special requirements  (e.g. vegetarian). During our stay, we had 6 of their meals and, whilst every meal was like a work of art we were very ready to choose our own food by the end!!

We stayed here for two nights and had a day of walking in Kamikochi in between. We phoned them in advance and pre-booked the the 2.45pm shuttle bus from Matsumoto station (West exit) directly to the hotel (about 75 minutes), which was free and very handy.

As soon as we arrived the staff were absolutely excellent and very helpful (and it didn't matter too much that they didn't speak much English). They took our boots and gave us slippers, checked us in, sat us down at a reserved table and sofa (with a fantastic view of the mountains) and gave us a cup of tea. I loved how in the morning they put your boots by the front door with your name next to them :-) The whole time we were there they looked after us so well, in a very relaxed and friendly manner. On the first morning I think they noticed that I wasn't too keen on some of the things we had in the Japanese breakfast (I don't like egg or mushy tofu!) and very kindly the next morning they prepared a massive basket of hot toast and homemade jam, as well as coffee (I didn't notice the Japanese guests getting this). The dinners were great. Even though we'd forgotten to tell them that my husband doesn't eat meat until they'd already served the meal, without any complaints they immediately took away the meat stew and replaced it with a equally lovely fish stew.

The only slightly downside, I think, is that the rooms could do with a bit of updating. However, I soon got over this, as the view of the mountains is excellent, the food was great and the staff super nice.

If you want to be in the centre of Kamikochi this wouldn't suit you, but the shuttle bus in the morning at 8am or 9am was great and only took about 15 minutes. There is also one mountain you can climb directly from the hotel, but nowhere else you can walk to, except along the narrow road - so not advisable. We took a taxi back from Kamikochi and it cost about £30!!! So I'd recommend waiting for the shuttle bus back in the evening (it was at about 5pm from the Nakanoyu bus stop at the bottom of the road).

Kamikochi was beautiful and definitely worth a visit.

Stayed two nights here in late February, there seemed to be many guests staying for snowshoe trekking (through the Kama tunnel and beyond) We didn’t come with the right type of boots, so we missed out.
Coming by car, we were helpfully advised in advance to hire a 4WD, as the mountain pass (Abō Pass - closed in winter to all but hotel guests and staff) from the main road can get icy.
The setting high in the mountains is fabulous. The big windows in the lobby has a fantastic view on a clear day.
Our twin room was a lot smaller than we’re used to in a ryokan, but the view of the mountains made up for it. No en-suite shower or bath, but the onsens downstairs were very adequate. I loved the bird feeder next to one of the outside baths - birdwatching and bathing, what joy! (On the downside, the outside onsen wasn’t quite hot enough for me in February on a snowy day).
Overall, a good mid-range ryokan catering for hikers and mountain lovers, with decent facilities, meals, and a great view.

The free hotel shuttle that drove us took 70 minutes from Matsumoto Station's West Exit to the ryokan (see my review for details). If you take the train+bus yourself, I believe it's 30 minutes on the train, 60 minutes on the bus, plus 10 minutes to the hotel via hotel pick-up not including the waiting time un between.
