Hakodate is quite a small town but the main touristy places were within reach near the hotel or accessible by tram. Love that the hotel was walking distance from the seafood market and the Redbrick Warehouse shopping area. It was also nearby the ropeway to Mt. Hakodate.

The room was pretty small. I wasn't expecting it to be large but it was small to an extent that the 'bathroom' was just a small cubicle with a toilet and shower area (separated) and the sink was in the room.
We had a small suitcase and a medium suitcase but they couldnt really be opened together in the room without it blocking the corridor to the door.
The bed was right next to the window and whoever slept near the window could feel a cool breeze from the window.
Despite the size of the room, the bed was comfortable and the room was cozy enough for the night's stay. There was a coffee bean grinder (and beans provided) and also 2 packs of free popcorn which seemed to be a popular snack for tourists to buy.

A basket of towel and clothes to wear to the rooftop onsen was provided in the room. The onsen was separated into male and female baths each with outdoor and indoor baths. The female changing room was huge with vanity tables and vinegar drinks which you can dispense to drink as you wish.
There were lots of people using the onsen but it doesnt seem overcrowded as there were still space for you to sit whether in the pools or the shower area. The indoor area had 2 indoor baths and one cold water bath while the outdoor area had one large bath and 3 small tubs. It was snowing while I was there so enjoying a hot soak while feeling the snowfall was a very lovely experience. The outdoor area was sheltered but the wind did blow the snow into the pool.
After the hot bath, we could cool off with the ice lollies back out in the common area which could be enjoyed while looking out at the beautiful view. Such a good idea, especially if you had to wait for a partner to finish.

The breakfast didn't disappoint! Such a variety of food to choose from, even unlimited crab roes!
The notices say that the restaurant gets busy from 8am onwards so we went at 7:30am and there was already a long queue to get in (but it wasnt a long wait). It turns out that if you were to arrive at 9am for breakfast (that was when we left) the queues would be much shorter and there would still be enough food.

Admittedly my partner and I were suffering from colds when we arrived in Hakodate but the temperature drop from Tokyo was welcome. Only stayed a night on the way to Sapporo. Tbf there didn’t appear to be much to differentiate hotels in Hakodate from the searches we did, but this one seemed good value and well located (we walked from the station). Checkin was fine and our assistant worked hard to understand (with the aid of google translate) about my feather allergy - all bedding replaced rapidly. Rooms are kinda compact and done out in a trad dark wood style with futons (which were on a platform so no issues getting up or off them) but that tended to take most of the available floor space. Bathroom was fully functional. Breakfast buffet was an amazing array of seafood foodstuffs (which I guess is to be expected in a port town) but western breakfast choices were a bit limited but we found enough to get by. Staff were always lovely. Onsen on the roof looked busy (and had we felt better we would have used it) but it’s a useful amenity. Overall good choice

Located near the popular sightseeing center at Hakodate Bay. La vista is one of the famous hotel with it rank “number one” buffet breakfast in town. It offer all you can eat sashimi “Ika”, shrimp, flying roe” as well as other Japanese /western style breakfast,,,plus the make in Hokkaido milk and pudding.

On the top floor of the hotel, is onsen place that you can see night view of Hokkaido Bay.

I'm not sure why there are criticisms of this place. My husband and I had a perfectly great night here on the way down to the main island of Japan and I really wanted to stay longer. Yes the rooms are small (but isn't this the case for most of the hotel rooms in Japan?)

I was very pleasantly surprised by the interesting European style of the hotel and the gorgeous views from the rooftop outdoor baths (which are free to use for hotel guests). There were also complimentary hot drinks in the lobby and a few restaurants surrounding the hotel complex which made for very easy meal planning.

Hotel looks good from the outside, and certainly from the minute you step into your room - but then the cracks start to show.

No in room wifi!! For a 4/5 star hotel it's supposed to be, it really doesn't cut it. Service from front line staff was so-so, wifi which was only available in the lobby was bad. So bad I had to use my own phone roaming just to get connected!

They provide an internet cable in the room but even then the connection was lousy.

As titled, saved by its onsen and breakfast, which were both great.

Only stayed one night and our double room is small, but had a great view of city and mountains. Hotel is less than 1 mile from Hakodate station, which makes for a nice walk. Taxi was about ¥700 (or USD7). Hotel does provide free shuttle to the station but not from. The hotel is also around the corner from the Red Brick Warehouses and the waterfront, so you’re not lacking in dining and shopping options nearby.

The Hakodate Ropeway is also less than a mile away and the walk there is a pretty one (it’s uphill on the way over, so be aware). There’s also a streetcar right outside the hotel.

The buffet breakfast is incredible with lots of options for Japanese style breakfast with a smorgasbord of seafood as well as a good selection of western style breakfast. Definitely not to be missed are the desserts! We could have just sat there nibbling away at all the sweets they had out.

And don’t miss their rooftop onsen, which is open all night. They even provide towels and lounge wear when you head up.

Staff was friendly, and spoke enough English for us to ask basic questions (directions, hours, etc).

Definitely a recommended option if you’re visiting Hakodate — if only for the onsen and breakfast.

The hotel is not close to the JR station, if you want to reach the hotel without driving it's better to ask for a pick-up service. Room is decorated in an excellent manner where a lot of appliances available and guests can blend coffee with the instruments and beans given. My room is facing direct to the bay and old port area so the night view is wonderful.
What is also fantastic is the breakfast offered - consecutively ranked among the top for hotel breakfast all over Japan. Guests can make their own sashimi-don and there're also some good quality deserts made from Hokkaido dairy products.
