We visited late September 2016, when the weather was perfect. The whole building was traditional but new, as we understand there was a fire happened back in late 2014 so they rebuilt everything. This is a place where you can truly relax and relieve. Room was nicely decorated and very comfortable, and our room has the private hot spring at... More

This was one of the worst onsen hotel I have ever been to in my life. The reviews was pretty descent prior to the fire renovation, but we were disappointed. First of all, the day we checked in was pretty hot in Hokkaido, with a daytime temperature at 29 C, the mini air con in the room was not sufficient... More

We just recently experienced Kourakuen within days ago. The experience and good impression still lingers. Even my 12-yo son was very impressed. Your 5 senses would be tickled. We stayed in the Hinoki room, the maisonette room with private open-air bath on the upper floor. Sight - Room space is respectable, good view/ vista, well-planned layouts, impeccable finishes to the... More

Makes you feel at home right from the start. You will be taking off your shoes from the moment you enter the lobby and you will be walking around barefooted or with socks like in your own home. Room is beautifully furnished with many toiletries provided. Onsen was nice and comfortable as well with a nice outdoor onsen with good... More

We've stayed in Kourakuen during the fire accident in Dec. We were very lucky that we managed to get all our belongings after the accident. Staff in there were very helpful during this stressful time and most importantly they were very nice to provide all the warm clothes and food for us in -10 degrees Celsius day and a place... More

This is my second experience of a proper ryokan and one that did not disappoint. We enjoyed our room, the stay, the private onset and the dinner and breakfast enormously. The setting was extremely peaceful. If I ever revisit Otaru, I will definitely book this ryokan again. We managed to book a transfer from Chitose airport which was also seamless... More

My friend and I visited Kourakuen last winter during the Otaru Lantern Festival. We stayed at a standard room with dinner + breakfast plan. This ryokan was the best ryokan I had experienced in Japan. I was touched by the staff's helpfulness and hospitality, though they didn't speak English. The dinner was fresh, delicious and generously offered with variety such... More

We have been looking for a good, traditional onsen place in Oatrus and we came across this one on the web. It's not easy to book via their website so i wrote it to them. The staff was very prompt and efficient in replying. This hotel is located Otaru and not too far from Otaru city centre. The hotel itself... More

As a budget travaller, this hotel is too expensive, but with the regular price even on X'mas eve, we spent our luxury holiday there. We stayed in the "Hagi" room with private outdoor onsen. It's a bonus in the snowing Xmas. Room is very large. Dinner and breakfast included were average.. many dishes, tasted depends. Very comfortable room, especially the... More

I booked a room with an open-air bath but was disappointed with the room (Room Shirakaba). It is quite small, quite dark, and most of all, it just smells of cigarette smoke. I believe it is the ryokan's policy where you cannot choose the room; they will allocate you a room based on the category you pay for (with open-air... More
