Stayed at Hotel Marroad Hakone overnight in Gora to break up the Golden Route around Hakone. Was not seeking an onsen experience, was only looking for a room for the night (did not eat at hotel) for a reasonable price, so cannot comment on food and beverage. Room was older and dated, but very clean and quiet. Staff were friendly. Used the indoor and outdoor hot mineral baths, which were clean and well maintained. Hotel was a 12 minute walk (and substantial elevation) away from restaurants in Gora (not that there are many), so dining options were limited (and a hike uphill to get back to the hotel).

and the windows in the rooms are small not taking full advantage of the scenic mountain views. This dated but relaxed hotel has relatively inexpensive rates as compared with others in Hakoe area.

The service is courteous in a Japanese way. The view from the lobby and the restaurant is wonderful. Above all, the outdoor hot spring bath, which is a cloudy white water with not too strong sulfur content, is wonderful. That may be due to the fact that I entered three times and was alone all three times.

Stayed here for two nights in August , thought it would be a treat for my partner as it was his birthday. Free shuttle service from station picked us up after a phone call to the hotel. We received a very cold welcome from the receptionist not what we expected during our stay in Japan. We had to pick our breakfast and the time we wanted it when we checked-in which was a bit bizarre. Room was a good size and well equiped with a balcony the only down side was the massive stain on the bed cover! We couldn't eat in the restaurant as we were not on half board even though the restaurant was empty! Shuttle driver had to drive us into the village to find somewhere to eat which was appreciated. French breakfast was pretty average with pretentious service from the waiters! Proved hard to get a drink in the lounge or bar area as they opened after 8pm and closed around 10pm!! Hotel is good for the hot springs or exploring the area and that's what you are paying for, I don't think it was worth the money. Hotel staff were probably the unfriendliest that we encountered during our holiday in Japan apart from the shuttle bus driver, everything we seemed to ask for was too much trouble for them. I wouldn't stay here again if I ever returned.

Our stay started unsatisfying. We read about the Shuttle Service of the Hotel and called in advance to get picked up at the train station. Our train was ten minutes too late and the shuttle bus wasnt waiting. We needed to take the cable car with our huge suitcases and walk uphill to the Hotel. At the reception we were told that we werent there on time. At 7:45 pm we were hungry and went to the restaurant of the hotel to have dinner. There we were told that we cant have dinner, because we didnt have a reservation. Only four out of twenty tables were occupied.

We only stayed at the Hotel Marroad for 1 night but in hindsight we wish we had stayed longer. Firstly, pros:
- amazing views from our private balcony
- the hotel has a free shuttle service - you just have to tell staff where you want to go and they shuttle you there
- the hotel has indoor and outdoor hot spring baths
- lovely and delicious French food at the restaurant
- very large and spacious room with all amenities provided for

Cons:
- small extra hidden charges which we were not told about for use of the hot springs (but it was worth it)
- the delicious French food in the restaurant was on the expensive side

All-in-all, the Marroad in Hakone is a great place to stay. It oozes European charm and almost reminds me of the European chalets in the Alps with its breath-taking views and style. The service is superior as are the rooms and the hot springs are spectacular. Definitely worth what you pay!

Hotel trying to live up to its past glory, but falling way behind competition. Price are up there, location is good, but its look rundown. However it is clean. The hot spring is functional but look tired. Being a foreigner, I was very disappointed by the food. There were no Japanese food, only international or french at good price ( $70.00 average for a set meal per person). Complimentary continental breakfast was OK, again with no Japanese flair. You have to set your choice the night before (only 3 choices). After 3 days you want something else than croque monsieur. Rooms were confortable with no luxury. Service was cold (dining room) Friendly at reception

Hotel had a helpful receptionist called Mi-O. Sorry about spelling. She helped us out in timetables for buses n trains. Hotel shuttle also sent us to Gora as well as picked us up. Also free Hakone bus using Hakone pass is on the street right outside hotel. Very easy to get to all museums and rope car stations.
Breakfast was not too good. Bed and room clean. Shower is basic.
Quiet. Great for relaxation.

Chose the Half Board and was Blown Away. Food at the restaurant is French inspired and was a very pleasant surprise. The staff were exceptional to our needs, rooms a bit out-dated but the views and amenities certainly outweighed this. Onsen a delight . Great not to have internet in room!!!

If the staff isn't proud of the hotel they work for, it says a lot. Terrible room (101), with sheets that are so dirty it was appalling that they deem it ok to show people. It was disgusting. The carpet was dirty, the room has 2 mosquitos we fought with just to lose the battle and have our kids bitten 2 in their face. There is a ticking sound the whole time, was very disturbing at night. And finally the humidifier was so dirty with dust I didn't trust turning it on we all wouldn't get asthmatic attacks.
The food was atrocious. If you're going to serve something, why not be proud of your food? If you have kids, avoid at all costs. You have to share everything. The picture attached is ALL the disgusting breakfast we were served. That's it. You don't get to chose or ask for more. Order it a day before and if it's my enough, well, it's your problem. Would I recommend it? Maybe to cockroaches. Not to people. It was last renovated about 30 years ago and has gotten absolutely no love since.

Place is satle dated and somewhat stale... meal regimen is much too rigid with no flexibility for those who travel with children... meal times and not able to be changed and room service is not permitted. Not sure how one expects to have kids begin a meal at 19:45 with actual entree served at around 20:30... cannot recommend and will not recommend for families...

I guess that it's pretty late. Any time that we came in, the reception desk was manned. The bar is open to 11pm, and that's just round the corner from the reception area, so someone should be around. Have you tried emailing them?
