Despite the whimsical name "Pipe Smoke Hotel" we thankfully found no pipe smoke in this hotel. This is a great hotel for families (we were traveling as a family of 9) that was affordable and convenient. Pricing follows the Japanese custom of per person rates (rather than by the room) but this includes dinner and breakfast along with access to the bath. We paid about 8000yen/person. Our room was set up with four single beds and included a bath and toilet, refrigerator, bath robes, tea kettle, TV, and towels in the room. Walls were thin and the train passed by the window regularly but we are a family of heavy sleepers so were not bothered (the train is only an issue if you are a light sleeper and want to go to bed early or sleep in late--presumably you could request a room on the opposite side of the hotel from the tracks if this is a concern). The hotel is very convenient at only a block away from the Gora Station and ideally located for those doing the overnight loop tour through the Hakone region. We are a mixed Japanese-American family so communication in Japanese was not an issue but the hotel seems generally welcoming to foreigners with some English signage and staff who know a few words of English and are patient with guests. The hot spring bath was moderate size (tubs that could comfortably fit half a dozen with plenty of personal space) with a steady flow of hot water piped in. Men's and women's bathing areas are separated with both indoor and open-air baths. Meals are served buffet style with dinner at 6 and breakfast at 7:30. Getting to meals promptly is recommended. The food is nothing special but includes a wide selection of items on three large buffet tables and is all-you-can-eat. Dinner items include rice, noodles, breads, fried foods, pickled vegetables, salads, roast beef, ribs, fish, and a desert bar featuring make-your-own ice cream sundae. Breakfast includes rice, bread, grilled fish, pickled vegetables, ham and eggs, salads, and waffle bar. Beverages are included and available at the drink bar but alcohol is extra. It's Japanese cafeteria-style food but good quality and the buffet allows everyone to find something (great with kids or picky eaters). I would recommend this hotel as a great option for families or students traveling on a budget seeking simple lodging that gets the job done and covers all the essentials. Couples looking for a romantic get away or those seeking a deeper cultural experience might look elsewhere, but for what it is, this hotel is a great option.

Oh! Love this hotel so much!
We booked through Odakyu Travel (email: yokoso@odakyu-travel.co.jp ), which includes 2 ways RomanceCar (Shinjuku - Hakone Yumoto - Shinjuku) + Free Pass (2 day usage) within Hakone + this 1N stay in this cosy hotel at ¥16,100!
It is super cheap as it includes dinner & breakfast!
Dinner was superb & breakfast was still acceptable.

Room (2nd level) was cosy & the view we had was good.
I think it will be better if we stay at a higher level...

Toilet a bit small so that the room is spacious.

It is so near the Gora Station & it the 1st stop for the Tozan Cable Car to Sounzan Station, where we can take the 30-minutes Ropeway to Togendai to see Mt. Fuji!

Overall, it is a very SUPERB convenient hotel, with restaurants & their local provision stalls at the Gora Station.

Not all the staffs could speak English, only one, I think. but they are very polite & even the staffs in the hotel restaurant are polite too.
The Onsen was small but not very crowded at that time we visited, so still ok for me!
Maybe the weather was not as cold as in Dec, I went to the outdoor onsen bath but couldn't feel the coldness on my head. :P
Date stay: 2013 Oct 27th - 28th.
I will definitely go back to this hotel again. :D

As you stepped off from the Gora train station, it is right there across the track. That station is also where you board the mountain climbing cable cars going up the mountain. Three bus lines also start right next to the station. So this hotel was really in a very convenient location. We opted for having both dinner and breakfast when we registered as we saw there were not too many other choices otherwise. It was a good choice. The dining room was big, and buffet choices many, both Japanese and western style. The train stopped at night and only starts from 7am, so the noise was not that bothersome.

If you are in Hakone to take the cable car and rope way to visit volcanic activity and take the ship on the lake for fantastic view, the location of hotel is excellent with just being next to the station. Just be ware that hotel is in Gora and there are absolutely nothing outside for night activities.

Breakfast and dinner were excellent.

Rooms are very simple and small and bathroom smells a bit. But no complain since the offer we had was very reasonable in comparison to service and quality we received. We will probably use this hotel again.

One good thing is that you can borrow private hot spring with rather little cost.

But bear in mind, if you are not Japanese and Japanese do not follow you, this hotel is not for you because staff do not speak English at all.

We stayed here for 2 nights with our son. The room was clean and large compared to other hotels. The bathroom was a bit small. The room was located next to the train tracks but the noise didn't bother and our son liked to watch the trains passing by.

The breakfast and dinner was ok. it was buffet style with enough choice.

The hotel is easily located within walking distance from the Gora train station and cable car. It took less than 2 minutes walking. The hotel does not have English signs at the front but if you're prepared you can find it easily.

The only problem is the lack of English speaking staff at the front desk. We tried to send our bag to the next hotel with Yamato but because the staff didn't speak Engish it was not possible to do. Before arrival we confirmed with Yamato if it was possible to do it and they did confirmed it. We ended up with taking our bag on the train and shipped it from Odawara station.

Because it is a busy and expensive area only smoking rooms were available when I booked, but because the windows opened I didn't find that to be a problem. The bathroom was small but worked well and the onsite onsen with inside and outside baths was very pleasant. The trains didn't stop (or the boom gates near the hotel) until 11.40 but still slept well. Great range of options for breakfast (both western and local) and they varied over the 3 days I stayed. Staff were friendly and helpful despite little English. There was a wooden wedge you could use to keep the power on whilst you were out of the room. It was so convenient for all transport options especially if you are using a 'free pass'. I found two small places close by to eat.

Literally right across from Gora train station, a 2-min walk. Most courteous staff, limited English but they do try. Super clean.

This is one of the very few western style hotel in the area that doesn't require you to book with a meal package. However, breakfast (at 540 yen) and dinner (1080 yen) could be added with prior notice. Breakfast, buffet style, mostly Japanese food, does have a small selection of western items (scrambled egg, toast, croissant, milk, yogurt, coffe/tea, fruit).

Twin room, at 18 sq m (195 sq ft) is pretty comfortable and comes with 2 chairs and a coffee table beside a desk. The hotel does have a communal Japanese onsen bath which is probably more comfortable in taking a shower and a dip than cleaning in your bathroom (standard, prefabricated, cramped).

Being next to the train station, the western side of the hotel is right by the tracks and will suffer from some noise (trains run from 5 am to a little past midnight) but I found it negligible although some may want ear plugs. The hotel, overall, is very quiet.
Within 15 minutes walk you have access to about a dozen eateries. But most of them do close early at around 7 pm.

Of note is that price at their souvenir shop is very competitive. Some items are far cheaper than what you pay at the stores near tourist stops.

Little English spoken but a very warm welcome. Rooms not the most modern, but well appointed. Right beside Gora station. Food was extremely varied, buffet style for both dinner and breakfast. The only downside was the beds were on the hard side.
The kind staff looked after our bags both before and after our stay, while we went off sightseeing. We booked via Odakyu, and the trip went like clockwork

If you are familiar with hotel in Japan specially in this area, this hotel is one of best choice because of it's location(just in front of the Gora JR station) and reasonable price. I tempted to grand 5 points for their value only!
We paid 7000yen per person (that is cheap in Japan, kids at elementary school age at 75% rate) for a night stay including buffet breakfast and dinner. The room is small but clean and has all the standard gadget in Japan (yukata-japanese cotton kimono for each guest, toilet with washlet, single bed for each, etc).
Unlike many onsen hotel with tranquility and calmness ambiance, this hotel, though it has onsen(hot spring), can tolerate family and kids but still quiet enough.
Selection of food at dinner was one of the best value. Roast beef, boiled crab, sashimi, good desserts, are line up at buffet.

The hotel is of standard build, quite old, our room was a little larger than norm Japanese size. Room well equipped, airy, very clean n functional. Modular bathroom, small, step up. Requested extra pillow, no probs. In room heating/cooling. Good night sleep, quiet. Dinner n bfast incl. Good variety, for each meal. Go 7pm not 7:30 dinner sitting, food is sitting there from 6pm, n not readily replenished. Tasty food. Toast n pancakes included in breakfast menu. Staff very helpful n friendly, limited English. Guests majority Japanese families. Just 5min walk from rail station.
