The ryokan provides complimentary pick-up at the Gora Train Station. At the check-in process you are offered a snack and drink and the same person who did the registration will also serve you your meals and essentially be assigned to you throughout your stay.
Our room had a Western style bed, with an indoor onsen and attached shower. After a busy time in Tokyo this was a peaceful, relaxing, experience. There was a separate deluxe toilet area, and the bathroom included numerous toiletries. A mini bar had complimentary water, juice, beer and in the room had an electric teapot, coffee maker, and air purifier. Our room #203, had a view of the mountains and ocean in the distance. The lighting was very good, wi-fi was great and there were lots of plugs. A traditional Japanese breakfast and dinner was included in the rate which was served in your own private dining room. The meal service was excellent, each dish was creative, beautifully presented, and served on unique plates .
The staff was extremely kind and helpful with maps and directions to do the Hakone loop independently. The hotel has a private elevator to the Sauzan Station Ropeway and Cable car station to make an easy start of your adventure.

This is Japanese hospitality at its finest - without breaking the bank *too* much. I stayed here 2 nights in a terrace type room. Getting to Hakone is a bit tricky, but I would say it's all worth it in the end. This is the place for ultimate relaxation. It is more on the pricier side, but keep in mind of what you're paying for - a large spacious room with your own private hot spring bath, exceptional service, complimentary locally brewed beer, coffee, tea, juice, water, snacks in room, and 2 full meals a day (breakfast and dinner) in your semi-private dining room. Essentially, the dining room is a large space with smaller rooms inside. The walls are not fully enclosed ceiling to floor, but they are high enough that I was unable to see other guests. while standing or sitting. Each of these smaller rooms also have a sliding door.

Please note when I emphasize FULL meals. This is not your average 1 appetizer, 1 entree, 1 dessert kind of deal. They are full on traditional Japanese breakfast and kaiseki for dinner. After these meals, we were always stuffed (sometimes I could barely finish them). The food was delicious and the variety was appreciated. Since we stayed two nights, we noticed that they specially changed the menu for us on the 2nd evening so that we would not have to eat the same menu (which honestly I really would not have minded because it was so good!). Our breakfast menu also changed every day as well. The food was full of flavor, and they always used local ingredients and what was in season. I am typically a picky eater, but was eager to try everything!

Minami was our primary host during our stay. She was always there to greet us for our meals, helped us arrange transportation, saw us off when we explored the city in the afternoon, and basically helped us with anything we needed. Most of the staff spoke some English and it was enough for us to communicate. We also made a same day reservation for shiatsu massages in our room. We were worried about availability, but they were able to easily accommodate us.

Overall, I would highly recommend this onsen if you are considering one in Hakone. Initially, I was a bit skeptical since there were not any recent reviews, but I hope my wonderful experience will ease any concerns.

First trip to Hakone, first stay in a ryokan. We all had a great satay. My daughter loved it so much she wanted to write the review-

Hello this is the daughter speaking this hotel is probably the best hotel on earth. The people were very friendly and our attendant wantanabe was so kind. the onsen was amazing there is like a little room to dry your hair. the bed room has two beds and little mattress if you have a bigger family or if you want to try something new and a private onsen I recommend doing the private one in the morning the dinner lunch and breakfast was big but AMAZING I personally don’t like fish but I tried there fish and I went from “fish are friends not food” to only wanting fish for dinner, and I forgot to write this but when you arrive at the inn they give you a menu of like drinks and red bean mochi if you get wantanabe tell her I said hi bye-bye

As you enter the warmly scented wood fragrance, warm floors, you are transported into total relaxation.

This place makes the Ritz Carlton look subpar if you can believe that. The attention to detail is mind-boggling. Just one example, our Japanese wear that is provided to wear around the property was perfectly sized for us without them even asking our size. We could only think they used our passport information or someone is great at eyeballing for the perfect size.

The food was on a whole different level. The pattern on the dishes matched the food and each course was another art piece. It was a work of intricate art only with food. 10 courses will blow you away both in taste and presentation. The breakfast was delicious and we ate every bite.

We had one woman who took care of us our entire one-night stay. She was so polite. Even though looked like the Ryokan was sold out for the night, we only saw one couple as we were checking in. Other than that time, it was total zen.

The private bath overlooking the mountain was picturesque. It even snowed in the morning which was so beautiful.

In the end, it was hard to leave. It was the highlight of our trip to Japan. We will certainly return.

Gora Hanaougi was one of our first stays in a two-week trip to Japan. We spent one night there, enjoying the onsen as well as meticulously prepared meals for dinner and breakfast. Later in the trip we had equally as elaborate and even more tasty meals in other locations, however the sense of courtesy and service at Gora Hanaougi was unique. If you are looking for a peaceful stay we recommend this ryokan, if it is in your budget.

Very good premises with a refined and traditional high end touch. Location is excellent with a private elevator to the ropeway. Service is nothing but great and really efficient. My only two points were there needs to be progress:
-there is a clear inconsistence in the level/quality of the food served at dinner depending on the days. While our second dinner was really good our first one was disappointing for this level of establishment. Some of the sushi seemed pale and not fresh and some fishes were simply without taste (frozen).
Service was great anyway which offset the lack of taste of the first day.
-there is an obvious issue with sewer odors in our room (just at the entrance), it is not constant but it is very strong in late afternoons.
Overall we were happy with the stay and the excellent service from the staff; but the hotel management must have better consistency in the food quality every day. Additionally the odors issue must be fixed urgently in room 201.

Great food. Exceptional service. Although I stayed at better rooms in Kyushu with the same price, this is Tokyo area, understandable. There was one staff who replied my email in English with a quite stiff tone. It was my initial interaction with them asking about transportation so it left me with a bad image. But after I got there, all the other staff were great.

Two very large spiders --- halfway between a quarter and a coaster, I wish I was exaggerating --- that we found in our bedroom (staff killed one, then we found another ~15 minutes later) during the evening didn't help my wife and I get a good night's sleep. Staff response to this was to minimize it, and when we left they gave us a 1000 yen snack as an apology.

Staff sent our luggage to wrong room upon our arrival, but error was corrected once pointed out and nothing went missing.

Onsen facilities were good (pre-bath cleaning area, indoor and outdoor onsen, etc), though view was rather poor (road, poles, etc). My wife said her bath's view was better, but this hotel did not offer any time switching between the male and female onsen, so I couldn't try the other side.

Dinner was excellent food quality, and server was top-notch too, but restaurant style (i.e. not served in room) meant noise from neighboring diners (cell phones ringing, business calls, children crying) and less privacy. Not the relaxing, romantic ambiance I had been hoping for.

Appreciate the van picking us up and dropping us off at the station (they were prompt, professional).

Some positives (food quality and server, onsen facilities), but far too many negatives and sources of stress (spiders, misplaced luggage, dinner noise, onsen view), so we really did not enjoy ourselves. Expected much better, especially considering the price. Would not recommend.

To be honest I am very disappointed. I specially chose Gora Hanaougi for their raving reviews, rooms, location, service, hot springs etc, and I am more than willing to pay a premium price for all these. But one of the highlights of staying at a japanese onsen ryokan besides experiencing the hot springs, is their food. As mentioned, they do not cater to vegetarians, I think if I were to pay a high price, I would expect their chef to be able to do something about this. I would suggest for people to look other places if they wish to experience more authentic experience of an onsen ryokan, where the chef takes care of your meals as well. There's no point with settling for meals restaurant-style.

Of course for those that don't mind, I'm sure they will find their meals acceptable.

During our two week visit to Japan we staying in three Ryokans - this one was our least favourite. We had travelled from Koyasan to here and it had taken us 9 hours to get there. We arrived at the hotel at 5:45pm. The staff rushed us in and man at the desk was hostile and unwelcoming when he pushed the paperwork in front of us. It was only later that we learnt that check-in closes at 6pm but we were very apologetic and we did arrive before 6pm.

We enjoyed a range of Japanese style foods on our trip and are people who, generally, will try and eat anything! However, the food here was a step too far. I like to try new things but the dishes that were being offered seemed to be more for effect than taste. At other Ryokans some of the foods have been interesting but delicious, but here, nothing was really tasty. It was disappointing.

The rooms are in the traditional Ryokan style but were not particularly comfortable to stay in. It took us 45 minutes to adjust the lights so that they were all off at the same time - it was not easy. One light didn't really go off at all and would flash when you stepped into the hall way. The onsen was lovely to have outside, however it was not clean and there were large amounts of debris sitting at the bottom. The general cleanliness of the hotel was not to a high standard.

The staff were helpful in driving us into Gora on two occasions and did make efforts to communicate well, as we did. The free internet is of poor quality and the smell of the sulphur was pretty overpowering.
