Let me begin by saying this ryokan (while luxury) is highly
traditional, and does not fit into the typical western perspective of a “five star hotel”. This isn’t the St Regis. The style is unapologetically Japanese, and there are strict rules in place. Some of them being, no early check-ins, no changes to massage reservations within 12 hours and no being late for dinner or breakfast.

With that said, I truly enjoyed the experience of an authentic ryokan that is as luxurious as it gets. We had a large living room, balcony, private onsen, and private omakase dining for all meals, with a kimono-clad room attendant who took care of us throughout the trip. We had different yukata for daytime, nighttime, and I highly recommend the shiatsu massage, for which masseurs (only male) come to the room. The facial at the spa was incredible too.

The hotel location is pretty good. Very good service. Very spacious suite, large enough to add tatami in the living room, the outdoor bathroom is very comfortable too. Dinner is Kaiseki cuisine, personally I think it’s even better than some of the Michelin restaurants. Breakfast can be served in Western or Japanese style. Breakfast and dinner are plentiful. Great value for money.

A nice place to stay for 2 nights, but some parts of my stay left a negative impression on me. I informed the staff of a nut allergy as well as the fact that I don’t drink, yet I was served a nut dish with dinner and an alcoholic beverage that I wasn’t aware was alcoholic. There is also very little privacy in the room, with the front door to the room being see-through. Kids yelled every night for several hours which made it difficult to relax.

The room was nice and looked traditional and we slept on a single futon bed each even though we were a couple , we weren't offered a double futon, so we just pushed the beds together, we were given just one mattress , so we looked around and found another mattress to put underneath so we had 2 mattresses off the floor.
We had our own private onsen which was lovely.
Breakfast was included and was very nice.
Our only issue was that they weren't very good with there English and when asked if we could have another cup of tea at breakfast they said no.
Also they were really strict at getting you out dead on or before 10 am .
We asked if we could leave our bags there at 10 am as our bus wasn't coming to 11.30 am and the first lady said no, and then i managed to talk to anothe person who said ok.
Overall it was an interesting night.

We loved the Gora Kadan. We were looking for that rare hybrid resort- one that feels and is designed in modern Japanese style, caters to Western style luxuries, but has the amenities of a traditional Japanese ryokan/onsen. This is the place. The rooms, although traditional in style, had enough modern touches to keep it comfortable. The en-suite onsen bath is highly recommended. The in room dining was such a cool experience. You have your own helper/server.

The property was great- small but with enough areas to explore. The private spa and spa services were great. The location is walkable to the open air museum and the Gyoza Center (which was delicious). There is a house Mercedes that can take you around Gora, especially if it is raining. I would come back next time in Hakone!

Wow! Fantastic hotel! Absolutely beautiful property, delicious food, and unparalleled service. We had two Japanese style rooms. The Matsu was on the second floor and had an outdoor tub. The Tsubaki was on the first floor and had a garden and sunken outdoor tub. It was a totally immersive experience – you remove your shoes to enter your room, then put on a Yukata to walk around the hotel. The kaiseki dinner is served in the room and is a multitude of delicious courses. Then slip into your sleeping Yukata and fall fast asleep on a comfortable futon mattress on the floor. Breakfast is another series of incredible courses. Don’t forget to pack your swimsuit to hit the onsen (hot spring pools)!

It is a ’ryokan’ with "hospitality" from start to finish.
’Nakai’ is a concierge that provides all services.
All services are perfect.
The facility is a fusion of Western and Japanese style and is friendly to overseas guests.
The price is very expensive, but you can understand it because it is related to the service.

I have been lucky to stay in a few nice hotels but I love this place and it is possibly my favourite. It is service beyond compare for me. The staff just get it right. It’s like staying with friends who just want to make you happy. They take you everywhere, sort out any issues, give you advice and just want you to have the most relaxing time possible. Dinner may not be that comfortable for ‘Westerners’ as eel etc is on the menu but it is fabulous quality which is clear and enables even the most unadventurous to have a go at it. Beautiful looking with a real old Japan feel, for my family of 5 (x3 children @ 12,15,16) it was the perfect choice. We had an interconnecting suite with a round private bath and private garden view, which was bliss. You get your own attendant at all times. If you are going to Hakone, go to this hotel if you can. Fab-u-lous

Loved this hotel so much! The bed was delicious, we had our own hot springs bath tub. Also loved the food experience in our own dining/living room, traditional style.
Would have stayed here an additional night!
Make sure you arrive early to book the family bath and also inform of food allergies beforehand.

I’m conflicted with all the positive reviews. We had a nice stay in a unique atmosphere. At this price, though, facilities should be immaculate and service should be polished. They were not.

Checkin started in the lobby and was loud and chaotic.

Room had a beautiful view and the private onsen was very relaxing. It’s awkwardly laid out, though, with other guests able to see in from the hallway. You can easily hear neighbors from outside. Bathroom was not clean. Furniture is worn and breaking. There is a kettle in the room with green tea and no coffee.

The staff is very friendly, but service is unrefined. This is not highly trained white-glove service as it should be for this price. I guess the average employee had about three months experience in the hospitality industry.

I’ll defer to someone with better experience to evaluate Japanese food. It seemed just “ok” relative to Tokyo meals. I can only add that the Wagyu was very unevenly cooked with some rare and some almost raw. Wine selection was poor. Sake was excellent, though.

All in all, I felt this was very poor value for money and would look elsewhere if I returned to this region.

The hotel provides free pick up from the Gora train station. You could probably arrange for pick up from Odawara for a fee. We departed from Odawara - it is a 35 minute drive from the hotel. Our tour guide arranged for the transfer.

They’re not far away. But some high end rooms have their own baths which is much better and no relaxing.

They say it’s the coldest in February in Japan. But not as the other countries. I’m sure the snowy mountains will make a great view while soaking in the onsen bath.

As a traditional high-class Japanese Ryokan, I doubt it. But ask.
