My husband and I spent two nights here in early December after staying in Nikko for a few days earlier. We arrived by bus which works out well. We didn't plan on it snowing which it did rather heavily. But this allowed a lot of "quiet" time indoors to read and enjoy their onsen. The staff are friendly and eager... More

Yumoto Itaya is one of the ryokans in the tranquil onsen resort village of Yumoto. It is a lovely Winter's drive north of Nikko. We came for the last few days of the Snow and Kamakura Festival. Kamakura are small igloo like structures made of ice and snow and lit with LEDs. Yumoto Itaya is a standard middle of the... More

The hosts were warm, hospitable and welcoming. The ryokan was quaint, cosy and comfortable. It was an experience that left me wanting more. I've stayed in ryokans before but none that made you feel so welcome. I literally felt as though I was being hosted as a family friend. The kaiseki dinner was great and we hung out at the... More

Our family truly loved our stay at this ryokan. Where to begin? With its small cluster of hotels, Yumoto Onsen is 90 minutes from the JR Nikko train station at the terminus of the Tobu bus line that shuttles regularly through the wooded mountain areas surrounding Nikko. The Yumoto Onsen area is somewhat less convenient than places closer to Nikko... More

It is my first time staying in a ryokan - so I do not have much basis for comparison. But the experience at Yumoto Itaya had been more than wonderful. Location-wise, it was great especially when I was looking to live in an area in a less touristy part of Nikko (so central Nikko was out). It is only a... More

Staying here is one of my best experience. The staff is friendly and helpful. The location is perfect (right next to a beautiful lake). The room is fairly clean and comfortable. Most importantly, outdoor onsen there are just amazing. I would like to visit there next time.

It's my first time to stay at a ryokan so I have no way to compare it but we were thoroughly pampered. The staff are extremely polite and gracious (even more so than at normal Japanese hotels) and you get the feeling that the room and meals were all prepared especially for your arrival. They let you choose from 2... More

As a ryokan as a place to sleep, there is nothing much to say about this hotel - except that no internet, while seeming to be an annoyance at first, actually helps the feeling of relaxation that the isolation of Yumoto engenders. The minibar is well-stocked with beers and ciders, there is a permanently bubbling pot of water for the... More

Went Nikko during winter, when I arrived at the bus station of Yumoto, I was surprise to see Yumoto Itaya van for picking us up as the ryokan is only 3 to 5 minutes walk from the bus station. During check-in, the front desk staff, who can speck simple English explain patiently the ryokan’s amenities and confirm when I want... More

I stayed there for one night during winter. A very traditional experience considering the wonderful gastronomy of the place and the very convenient outdoor onsen. The staff was very helpful. Wi-fi worked perfectly. Be aware that a traditional ryokan has restricted times for dinner and breakfast. It's not a resort in a common sense. Smoking is permitted indoors, so be... More
