This is the oldest Western-style resort classic hotel in Japan. Famous dignitaries from around the world, including Isabella Bird, Albert Einstein, and Helen Keller, have stayed here. The building itself is registered as a Tangible Cultural Property and a Heritage of Industrial Modernization.
Although the hotel has been expanded and remodeled many times over the years, it has retained as much as possible of the original appearance of the building, so some of the facilities feel old. However, this is one of the charms of this hotel. On the first floor, there is a corner with autographs and photos of famous people who have stayed at the hotel in the past, and although it is very small, it has the aspect of a historical museum.
The annex does not have an elevator, but the main building does, so people with disabilities such as wheelchairs can stay in the main building and the new building without any problems.
I would recommend booking a room at this hotel, including breakfast and dinner if possible. There are several cafes and restaurants around the hotel, but only a few of them are open at night. Therefore, you may have to wait for a long time in some cases due to the crowds of people visiting these restaurants for dinner. In addition, there are no convenience stores in the area, and even the nearest one requires a 10-minute walk. It's recommended that you buy your snacks in advance before checking into the hotel if you need.
The location of the hotel is a bit of a consideration, but even so, a stay at a hotel surrounded by the rich nature of Nikko will be a wonderful experience.

The hotel is more like a museum :). You can admire every room and every thing :) You will see a table lamp at the reception, which has been standing there since 1907, in the lobby you will see photographs of people who stayed at this hotel - Indira Gandhi, Eleanor Roosevelt, Robert Koch, Edward Prince of Wales and many other.
The restaurant has very beautiful dishes.
And the table for dinner was set using 11 cutlery :) The staff is very attentive and polite. I would especially like to thank Sabita for her help.
The room itself is fairly basic (but not modern) the beds are very comfortable and the bathroom has everything you need for a short stay. Rooms are not cleaned daily and towels are not changed unless specifically requested.
The location of the hotel is very convenient, a three-minute walk from Nikko Park - UNESCO heritage. Currently, one wing of the hotel is being renovated.

This is the oldest traditional classic hotel in Japan and the building is steeped in history. I loved the decor in the public areas and bedroom: vintage. There is a lot of history in this hotel.
We stayed here for two nights in a huge room, with armchairs, sofa, two large single beds and the usual other bedroom furniture. The one downside is the bathroom is tired however everything worked well.
Nespresso coffee machine and a small selection of ocha available.
Towels were changed daily on request.
Staff are so friendly and helpful. Particular thanks to the dining room team who went above and beyond to meet my dietary requirements. This was all done discreetly and with no fuss. Thank you so much for this.
If you walk by the river ask reception for a spray to use on uncovered areas due to leeches ( they can also drop from trees).
Very well placed for the town. Interesting shops to browse. Many close between 4-5pm.

Wonderful stay at the Kanaya Hotel. The hotel staffs are super friendly and helpful. They have kept this superb traditional Japanese hotel service which you don’t see very often nowadays anywhere else.
The hotel vibe is very modern retro and details can be spotted in every corner. Clean with good amenities.
At the Kanaya Hotel, you get to enjoy the 150 years old hotel history and the best service you’ve ever had in Japan.

We stayed only for one night with our 20 month old son. It was really great.
We had dinner and breakfast - both very good. Very fast and kind service.
Also English was no issue in this hotel - as we are not good in Japanese this is very helpful.
The hotel itself is older but everything is very clean and maintained well. The location of the hotel is also very nice.
And very special: we felt like home - I can not explain that in detail. Just that because of location, cleanliness and that it is a quiet place there was this very special feeling. We loved that.

We loved this charming old hotel - they don’t stop telling you it’s the oldest western style hotel in Japan. (Don’t miss the display off the lobby of guest registers signed by everyone from Albert Einstein to Lou Gehrig.) Our room was large and comfortable if sparsely furnished. The grounds, on a hill above a rushing stream, are lovely. The restaurant serves vey good French-style cuisine with Japanese influences, although it seems a bit elaborate for a place out in the country - I counted 13 pieces of cutlery surrounding my plate at dinner. The property is a little the worse for wear, which wasn’t helped by the Covid shutdown. Hopefully they’ll refurbish the place now that Japan has reopened.

We had a wonderful stay at the Kanaya over New Years. We had the most wonderful French dinner for New Year’s Eve plus a follow up of optional noodles which is good luck nor the new year.(fortunately one bit will do, as we were quite full. But the highlight was the staff. We had a few minor snafus, and the were so gracious and helpful in getting us back on course. And when there were no snafus, they were equally lovely. A big thanks to them all.

Provided perfect refuge fro almost overwhelming experiences of crowds mountains shrines. No wonder frank Lloyd wright was inspired.

The room (with 2 beds) was excellent, roomy and with a beautiful view to the river and mountains.
This hotel has history, it is a dignified hotel with plenty of helpful service staff and beautiful place to eat breakfast.
Breakfast is served by menu, not a buffet but satisfying.
I highly recommend this hotel due to its spacious room, service a beautiful decor.

I am not aware of tours from Nikko, only from Tokyo. You can go by train from Nikko Tobu station to Ashikaga gardens. It takes about 1.40h; about 1 train per h. Tobu station is the first station when you go down from the hotel; the other is JR station. Hope this is of help. Kind regards, Paul
