For twenty years Fisherman's Rest has been working alongside its communities in the surrounding schools and villages. It is a thriving not for profit Lodge and Nature Reserve, which employs more than one hundred people from the local community. The vision of the Chichlowscy family is to see the districts around Fisherman's Rest thrive, through communities working together to raise living standards, education and economic opportunity. From Fisherman’s Rest we organise unforgettable holidays. We are able to offer a range of day trips and tours to the famous Lake of Stars, the National Parks and wildlife reserves, using lodges and venues that meet all budgets. We also offer opportunities for individuals and groups to engage with local communities across a wide range of projects in schools, clinics, prisons, orphanages, churches and villages. It is our desire to provide our visitors with an experience that will be cherished for life through the sharing of their energy, time and skills with the communities around us. We long to see improved standards of education, health, farming and housing. We are connected with broadband throughout the site and we are an excellent venue for conferences, workshops and retreats. Nearby is Blantyre city, which is our closest airport.

My husband and I stayed here for a night on a trip to Blantyre for business. Immediately upon arrival we saw several impala around the property which was pretty special. Unfortunately it was very foggy, cold and wet having been raining all day so we missed the famous sunset views. Initially we were to stay in the Bush Hide but due to the conditions we thought a room closer to the restaurant and more sheltered would be better. The staff were so flexible and helpful in arranging another room for us which ended up being very cozy with a sitting room looking out over the forest and a large bathroom with warm showers. In the morning we took a walk around the lush grounds. Breakfast was very plentiful and filling on a cool morning. Overall we enjoyed a peaceful night in the forest and hope to return again on a sunny day to enjoy the Bush Hide & views!

I stayed at fisherman's rest with a school, we went to help children at a school who are very poor also planted trees and a lot more. I personally found it very rewarding to help people in such need and also they are wonderful people. I do hope to go back again.

My husband and I were at Fisherman's rest two weeks ago. We had mixed experiences and since the good ones out-weighed the bad ones, I will give our overall experience a 4 out of 5. Let's start with the bad: 1) when we arrived, we showed up at the second gate down the stretch of road where the estate is located. The security guard was very unsure about whether we should be there, he parked us under a tree and called a lady we had spoken to over the phone when we did the booking. She seemed more comfortable addressing my European husband than my Malawian self, unfortunate but I don't think I am wrong to assume that this is sadly not out of the ordinary on estates?? Anyway, she directed us to gate number one on the stretch 2) We left for dinner in Blantyre and returned to find the whole place locked up and all the lights switched off. We spent about a half hour sitting outdoors waiting for the keys. On the positive side, these are the aspects we thoroughly enjoyed: the lodge has lovely views over the rift valley and you can make out the Shire River in the distance, we spotted some interesting birds, there was power throughout (there was a generator on stand-by), we were the only guests that night so we had a wonderful time reading, swimming, buying from the bar, watching the stars, watching netflix (using wifi vouchers) all by ourselves! Breakfast the next morning was awesome and we ate it by the pool looking out over the lovely view. The rooms and facilities were good too. We didn't take our daughter along this trip but we were pleased to know that if we get to go again in the future, there is a small library for kids as well. We would absolutely go again...in spite of the two negative experiences above.

Fisherman's Rest is just outside Blantyre on the road towards Majete. I have been back to Fisherman's many times now and I'm now greeted more like family by the ever growing number of friendly staff. They employ staff from the local community where ever possible and as a result now have nearly 130 members of staff running their plethora of different accommodation facilities, ground and community projects. The forest and nature reserve are enchanting and i love the fact you can walk around and stumble upon antelope grazing. The pools are a pleasant and welcome treat on a hot day and the views are truly breath-taking (you can see that from the pictures). The various accommodation options cater for most needs with basic tradition mud huts eco-lodges, self catering houses, catered accommodation and more luxurious options. The food is hearty, home cooked food no frills but lots of it and tasty so no complaints there. For me I like to get involved in as many of the community projects as I can and this is where Fisherman's Rest really excels. They set them selves apart with their enthusiasm and energy to really help the wider community around them where ever possible. It doesn't matter you age or skills if you are willing they can make use of your energies and my experience has been the richer for it. There is no better way to experience a country than to live along side those who live their and delve into their culture and Fisherman's Rest facilitate this brilliantly.

Well where to start, we had the most amazing stay, such a friendly place and staff. From the time we were met at the air port and throughout our time we felt truly spoilt. The hide where we stayed was lovely and had amazing views. Visiting the projects was a highlight and we met some amazing people and children . The team at Fisherman's arranged trips to a game park and Lake Malawi. The sunsets "the golden hour" were glorious and will stay with me as will the people who are warm and welcoming thank you all.

This was my second visit staying at Fishermans Rest. We work in partnership to build schools, provide farming opportunities and deliver food within the school environment. As always we had a jam packed schedule to see our projects and other areas that Fishermans Rest are involved with. The staff are incredible and we were looked after and involved at every turn. I travelled with 3 teenagers and they all had an amazing time as did I. Roll on next year!!!

I took a group of students from Greenville College (now University) to Malawi to get involved in the local NGOs working with street children and villages near Blantyre. Their experience at Fisherman's Rest, from the accommodations to the food to the view, activities, etc. was so transformational and impactful that they continued to talk and post about it for the next academic year. We were hosted as if we were all family, and for the near two weeks that we were there our time was magnificent. Students did not want to return to the US! Thank you Fisherman's Rest for the experience of a lifetime.

If you're in Blantyre, I cannot recommend Fisherman's Rest highly enough. Having spent quite a few weeks here, I'd struggle to imagine a more sustainably immersive way to experience the region. The staff will be able to give you directions to navigate there from Blantyre (a straightforward feat once you've been in the region a while, but a bit of an adventure if you haven't). It's worth drawing a distinction between volunteering and simply visiting (Fisherman's Rest caters for both) - and while I can best talk about the volunteering aspect, I believe most people finding this entry in TripAdvisor will be making a more fleeting visit, so I will concentrate on that. There were quite a number of visitors who arrived for a few days or just for dinner. The lodge itself is exceptionally comfortable, but the gem here are the grounds and pool. The pictures of the pool speak for themselves but the grounds are incredible - containing monkeys, at least one huge owl and a species of wild deer so tame it approaches people to be petted. While the rooms aren't marble and plastic like that of a hotel, it would feel odd if they were and that's not what you go there for. The beds are exceptionally comfortable, the heavy mozzy nets were infallable (honestly why can't everywhere just have long heavy mozzy nets like here) and magically, a lot of the region doesn't have electricity, so much of the landscape disappears into total darkness at night. Between this and falling asleep to the noise of jungle animals and an incredible range of different weather patterns, I've had some of the best sleep I've ever had at Fisherman's Rest. The staff are invaluable for giving knowledge of the area and critically all the interesting intricacies of the culture. I've done my best not to make this seem like a sales pitch, but it really is both a beautiful rough-diamond and an honestly magical place. I cannot wait to return. Also if you are thinking of volunteering there it is an incredible opportunity.

We stayed & volunteered at Fishermen's Rest as a family at Easter. The staff are very friendly & could't do enough to help us. The food was delicious and the accommodation was lovely - on arrival we had flowers on our bedding and towels shaped into hearts/birds. The views here are stunning and it was lovely to be able to cool off in the Africa shaped swimming pool. We loved visiting and helping at the various projects - visiting & helping in schools, surveying and helping repair water bore holes, building a clay oven - the list is endless. Our boys are 14 & 11 and they throughly enjoyed and want to return. We would highly recommend staying at Fisherman's Rest, we found Malawi to be a safe and friendly country.

There's a accommodation options, our family lived at the tea house for three weeks. My partner worked with the carpenters constructing roof trusses whilst we (myself and our children) had great fun at the nearby community centre. We shopped in Blantyre and self catered ..it was such a great way to learn about Malawi ..would highly recommend for adventurous families ..communication for us was excellent
