Conveniently situated within the UNESCO World Heritage buffer zone and walking distance from the central business district, Areca Hotel offers families and travelers the opportunity to experience the rich history and vibrant culture that George Town and Penang has to offer. Areca Hotel is named after the Areca Palm (Areca Catechu), also known commonly as the Pinang palm and from which Penang island derives its name. Our family hotel features 50 rooms located across twelve newly renovated shop houses in a private enclave along Khoo Sian Ewe Road. The original pre war shop houses (and the land on both sides of Khoo Sian Ewe Road) were once owned by Khoo Sian Ewe, philanthropic businessman, landowner and during his time one of the wealthiest men in Penang. The Majestic Theatre, located directly opposite our hotel, was the first cinema in Penang to screen Chinese sound films. We offer a variety of rooms ranging from spacious family suites, cozy garden rooms to luxurious heritage suites. Modern furnishings provide guests with the comforts of home. Additional facilities in the hotel include a cafe, children’s room, conference/meeting room, library and computer lounge. We invite you to stay with us and enjoy our family-friendly hospitality. Fancy a bowl of Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul but long queue and hot sun? Courtesy from Areca Hotel, in-house guests can now enjoy it when you savour your Complimentary Afternoon Tea with us.

Beautiful colonial style hotel in a great location to enjoy George Town on foot.
The hotel is worth a visit in itself bringing the charm and design of British Malay. Much more character than the many international hotel tower blocks that dominate the sky line.
The rooms are comfortable. Rooms are not large but on the top floor the ceilings are high. The ac and fan keep the room cool. The bathroom is a good size. There is a fridge and safe in the room and 2 bottles of water are provided per day. My only compliant is that at night the room was not dark, but it is quiet with neither street noise or noise from other guests to disturb your sleep.
Breakfast is excellent with both Western and eastern options. There is also afternoon tea included in the price which was a nice surprise.
The hotel is only a short walk from the main tourist section of George Town. There are lots and lots of restaurants and street food hawkers near by.

A good combo of old and new. Truly Malaysian experience in terms of interior and exterior (Baba Nyonya with a dash of modern world). Exceptional cleanliness and services wise. For those with families or a group travelers, rooms are for 4 paxs are huge enough to cater up to 6 paxs of adults, instead. Parkings are available at MYR6 daily (via apps and free on Sunday, and this is an advantage, as most nearby hotels do not have these. Very secure and private. The complimentary tea? A brilliant idea! as not only a small gesture (that's very impactful) but definitely the choices finger food, shows how much the hotel values, you. A truly great experience with a very reasonable budget. A repeat visit is definite for my end, for any future Penang trip.

We stayed for 2 nights last year. Its a small place but surprisingly it exceeds my expectation. The room was a bit small. but clean. The hotel itself is very near to the local famous eateries as we can just walk to our destination. The breakfast is a la carte and the potion are just enough. The best part of the stay is the afternoon tea which rarely offered in any hotel we have been before. They got various biscuits, kueh, snacks and even ice cream that is unlimited for the guest during that period of time. You can get more offers and extra only from direct booking from their website

The hotels reviews are accurate. The rooms are a decent size, the staff are very welcoming and the location to the centre of George Town is excellent. If this review was solely on the above I'd give it a 4.5/5. The only minus which is a huge minus is that the Areca is situated nearby a club that blurts out music from 23.00 until 04.00 every night. The floor in our room vibrated and as I type it still is. If you're a light sleeper you simply won't get any sleep.

The Areca know about the noise as they have pre written notices in the room about the noise. The notice says they offer free ear plugs but you don't stay at a hotel to wear ear plugs! Unfortunately the hotel was fully booked so we couldn't change room. They also offer free afternoon tea which is a nice perk but it literally is a free tea bag and a samosa.

The noise is really not the hotels fault but they have to strike a deal with the local club otherwise people won't return to the Areca. Simple.

Like I said.. if it's not noisy it's a 4.5/5 but based on our experience it's a 2/5.

Best boutique hotel in Penang i’ve ever stay! Affordable rates for 2 nights, room was spacious, breakfast was amazing and delicious and for those who drives, parking was convenient as there’s a lot of public parking right in front of the hotel, just need to download the Penang smart parking apps. Hospitality was great. Overall, I enjoyed my stay very much. Thank you!

I was blown away by how gracious and friendly the hotel staffs were. From Reen at the Front Office, to Stan who served us breakfast. And many others whom I unfortunately didn’t catch their names. Really, it’s those little things that makes you feel warm and fuzzy — the phone call to the room just as you’ve checked in, asking if everything is alright and if the room meets our expectations. To the smiles and cheery greeting as you walked in through the lobby after a hot, tiring day of sightseeing. The biggest gesture was certainly when Jovan, Areca’s Asst. Hotel Manager, approached us during breakfast to ask how our stay was. We chatted about the hotel’s history and beautiful decor. I thought it was really nice of him to take time to connect with his guests. Jovan also very kindly offered us a late check-out, which we all accepted happily!

Can’t say enough of the beautiful decor, porcelain antiques and indoor landscaping of this hotel. Too beautiful you have to see and experience it on your own.

It also pays that the hotel is surrounded by amazing eateries, all within walking distance. Nasi dalcha Mami Fatimah is one place you should not miss! That ayam masak bawang is mind-boggling delicious!

All in all, we had a wonderful staycation at Areca and would definitely pick this hotel again in a heartbeat!

Decided to book the hotel to experience living in a conservative building. This is definitely not a luxury hotel with the usual hotel facilities.

What you get is a basic lobby with a nice courtyard which is set up with comfortable sofas. There is a cafe at the end of the building which serves breakfast and lunch.

Booked the basic room category. Very small room with comfortable double bed, aircon, TV and powerful shower. There is a empty fridge which is useful to store items and coffee/tea making facilities.

The room was clean and dust free. There is no carpet on the floor and I must commend the Housekeeping team for an excellent job cleaning the floor.

No doubt the windows are not sound proof but there are hardly any noise as the windows were facing the back of another building.

Will certainly recommend if one only needs a room to sleep as its located off Penang Road which is the old part of town and its walking distance to the popular hawker stalls.

I spent 5 nights in Penang, all at the Areca. I wish I could have stayed for more. The hotel is a real gem, ideally located in the centre of George Town. Its just a 2 minute walk to the top of Campbell Street. The Hotel is on a side street dissecting the two main bus roads. Great for when you want to jump on the free transit bus, or visit Penang Hill, shopping Mall or National Park.

The hotel itself is a beautiful old building. The room was large, containg old furniture a nice table and chairs and a very comfy bed. The bathroom was also large and contained a great walk in rain shower. The room and bathroom were spotless.

A nice touch was the tea and coffee served in the atrium in the afternnons, along with cake and a savoury.

Not being on an inclusive deal I paid for breakfast each morning. There is a set choice together with a buffet of toast, cheeses, meats, homemade yoghurts and fresh fruit and drinks. A very good start to the day.

The staff were very friendly and helpful.

If I ever teturn to Penang I would definately stay here again and would have no qualms about recommending it to others.

Beautiful place to stay. Nice atmosphere really comfy rooms although the floor with the family rooms can be very noisy. We were quickly accommodated when we asked to move to a quieter part of the hotel The staff are very professional and the afternoon tea is a nice touch.
