The staff were so helpful! We stayed in the Heritage Wind and loved the whole decor! At the ground floor, sometimes a pianist was playing piano and it made us feel relaxed. Pretty much everything we loved... If you love swimming or chilling at a pool side, you must go to both of the Heritage Wing pool and the new... More

The location is not near the heart of the city. The guests would have to take a taxi to if you would like to dine and shop in the city. The rooms are so comfortably decorated with good taste. The breakfast in the hotel is magnificent and the Malaysian food there is authentic and of good taste.

What can I say about this hotel. It is impressive from the front as you approach but from the back it is even more impressive, backing, as it does, onto the sea. Admittedly we were lucky, as upon checking in we were advised we had been complimentary upgraded to a suite on account of it being our honeymoon. Went to... More

My wife and stayed 3 nights at the E&O and what a truly great experience it was. Check in was very easy and handled very promptly by the lovely staff and our luggage was with us in our suite inn no time at all.A great start. The suite was beautiful with a lovely large bedroom/living room with writing desk and... More

Stayed in the Heritage wing for a couple of nights before going to Batu Fahringghi. Thought it would be pretentious but it wasn't. We got a very good deal by booking early and was given a room with no great view, (I believe there are rooms with great views - Noel stayed there I believe!). Even so the rooms were... More

This is one of the few hotels we have stayed in where there was no need to move outside for three days … the hotel catered for all our needs. We had a suite on the 15th floor of the annex. The accommodation was immaculate, the bed first class and the service faultless. Breakfast in the lobby, lunch in the... More

In East Asia, I've stayed at most of the grand old colonial hotels: Oriental Bangkok, Strand Yangoon, Raffles Singapore, Metripole Hanoi, Imperial Tokyo, and the Manilla Hotel. I think the E&O comes out tops. It hasn't gone flashy, super-luxury that takes itself too seriously like the others-and it doesn't have the exorbitant prices either. The old wing is still calm,... The E&O is sadly no more the pearl of the Orient although it portraits that it is. We stayed in heritage wing which is nice enough but a bit tatty with paint flaking and carpets fraying in places. The biggest disappointment is total lack of service with very distant and cold staff who seem to not care at all for... More

One of the nicest hotels I have ever stayed in. Gracious with a touch of understated elegance. We stayed for one week in the Heritage wing which I would recommend, first floor overlooking the pool and the sea. The room was sumptuous and huge, the staff were welcoming and impeccable from the friendly doorman to the pool attendant who brought... More

Great hotel, but lacking some of the small basics you'd expect from a hotel of this price. Usually hotels like this offer a welcome drink, or have at the least, water in the lobby for guests. Seems a bit chintzy. Dinner buffet is pretty great though, worth the 133 MYR. Tons of great food and selections. All in all a... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Eastern & Oriental Hotel is the embodiment of both a special time and a special place. For well over a century, this remarkable hotel - known simply as 'The E&O' to generations of travellers - has stood as a testament to the grand elegance of the British colonial era. In many ways, it has also come to represent Penang itself; its story inextricably woven into the island's history, its traditions an indelible part of many a traveller's treasured memory, its name synonymous with the magical island once known as The Pearl Of the Orient. ... more   less
