This hotel is huge with pretty gardens and a large pool. The hotel is close to a pleasant but busy beach/ lagoon and in walking distance from some shops and restaurants. We did not eat at the hotel at all except for breakfast as the prices were quite expensive. No English was spoken so nothing was really explained to us. The room cleaners only came in the afternoon when we were showering so we told them they were not needed then! The hotel is so big it feels somewhat impersonal and the breakfast is a bit of a “bun fight” as many items seem to run out due to so many people using a small buffet area at the same time. The food is ok but not much variety and not a huge amount of options to choose. The rooms are large but very plain with no character, but clean.

Arrivals/Depature
We took a side trip from Mauritius to Reunion and got a great deal on airfares with Air Austral. The flight only takes 45 minutes. The hotel is about a 40 minute coastal drive to the hotel in St Gilles Les Bains. The hotel charges a flat transfer fee of 25 euro per person. It is cheaper to travel by bus but naturally takes more time and change of bus required at St Denis. The day of our arrival the coastal road was closed for works (now opened) and we had to take a wonderful mountain road with bus (changed 3 times). We soon had to learn on the yellow bus to make it stop you have to clap loud twice for the driver to stop. To travel from L'Hermitage area to St Gilles Les Bains is serviced by two different public bus routes that have two different roads - one coastal one inland. It is reasonable ticket price but we also walked into the town of St Gilles Les Bains, not too far, 2km, lovely walk and many hotels/residences line the road.

Room
Our room was on the top floor and looked down to the pool area. Had a balcony with chairs and tables, nice to sit out on and enjoy the area. The room was a reasonable size and lovely and clean.
No complaints at all with the room.

Hotel
There is a supermarket and bakery about 2 minutes from the hotel with an ATM, take a left on exiting the hotel. Hotel is situated on L'Hermitage Beach, the pool area has a gate that backs onto road. There are a few bars and restaurants dotted along the beach. We enjoyed a swim in the reef area of L'Hermitage Beach -at high tide and take care as the current is strong. Buffet breakfast is included for all guests and it is to an excellent standard. The nightly buffet was 25 euro per person and great quality. A poolside restauarnt offers meals for the lunch hour. But St Gilles Les Bains is not far away and the seaside restaurants and bars are with good views and food/wine. This hotel is well suited for those with reduced mobility as there are ramps to all areas. There is a Europcar desk, souvenir shop, and tour desk available. Excursions are organised from helicopter flights to volcano tours. There are sport activites available and it is a nice family hotel.

We had confirmed and paid for transfer from hotel to airport for 0500 pick up. No transfer arrived and after many attempts finally after a hour a car arrived after we remembered by luck the name of the staff member who booked it for us. If we didn't have such a great driver we would have missed our flight to Mauritius, it was the style from the movie Ronin. English is very limited at this hotel and we found few staff members who knew a few words.

We will definately return to Reunion but we would change property next time and have a hire car as it is easy to get around and the island is to see.

nice hotel on the most touristic side of Reunion, next to a(safe) beach, needs some refurbishing... but very nice gardens, nice pool(s) and friendly personel. Not close to any town , though, one needs a car to be able to move around. A good place to relax and enjoy the island...

Unbelievably noisy. The cleaning lady is making the room at 07:01 AM of the 1st January, waking up all the guests.
Noone speaks English in this hotel.
The proper rating would be 1 star and not 3.
Worst experience of my life, highly not recommended.

Good located on west coast. Nice pools and a short step through garden to a coralstone beach wth nice snorkelling oportunities. Rooms With balconies or patio towards pool or outside road. Big and clean rooms. Wifi ok also in rooms when you catch it from reception area. Hugh buffet breakfast in garden patio. Lot of birds come to join the food also. rather expensive restaurant on site for lunch and dinner. Good location for driving to the mountains and volcano.

We stayed here for 3 nights as a 'side trip' from mauritius. Reunion is a very interesting place to visit and this hotel is quite convenient. Rooms are nice and clean. Pools are a bit too hot, but fine. Good free wifi and okay breakfast. Staff speak adequate English. Many restaurants and shops within short walking distance and no need to rent a car. We really enjoyed our stay and recommend it as a good and affordable stay!

We stayed at the Novotel St. Gilles in September 2013 and were somewhat dissappointed when we checked in. The entire hotel has a 70's look and it looks as if nothing was done after the hotel was huilt to keep it up to date. This counts especially for the restaurant area where hiddeous furniture is used and the entire area screams for renovation.
Breakfast is OK (buffet) but dinner (buffet or a la carte) is nothing special. The restaurant doesn't even serve cappuchino which we found rather strange. We mostly had dinner at the next door La Bobine, situated on the beach in a lovely setting and with affordable prices and we had dinner at the Roland Garros Restauarant in St. Denis the 2 days we rented a car.
The hotel has no private beach. The beach is public and can be accessed by a gate (the hotel gives you a code to open the door). There are no beach chairs available, you have to lie down on a towel that is provided by the hotel. In the weekend, the beach is crowded by locals but we experienced that as fun. The beach is beautiful as well as the sunset. The hotel has a swimming pool as well but it was closed most of the time.
The service at the reception and Europcar car rental desk is good and friendly. Furthermore, the hotel has no shop to buy postcards, suntan lotion, etc. Something you would expect in a Novotel. The nearest shops are located in the village of St. Gilles.
TIP: the hotel offers transportation to and from the Roland Garros Airport for €50 per room but ONLY if booked in advance. When we arrived at the airport, we had to take a taxi that charged us €125, the most expensive taxi ride of our lives. The hotel didn't want to pick us up since we had not made reservations before arrival.

Cocktails on arrival = a carton of 'no frills' cocktail juice and so the experience began. Noisy air-con, shower wouldn't drain, mini fridge only cooled to room temperature, pen holder provided as coffee cup, pool out of service, TV wouldn't work, a la carte menu actually means you have no choice (because they ran out), dogs and cats hassling guest as they eat, scrambled eggs soaking in water mixture for breakfast and grab what you can because you will have to compete with the birds for the other options. Then the hotel ran out of water. A few staff were O.K but all in all don't ask for help because they won't come. The best thing I can say about this hotel is the bread was pretty good. Save yourself the greif.

We only stayed two nights at this hotel. It was ment to give us two days of relaxation, after a lot of hiking in the mointains. After Check-in we went to our room. As soon as we opened the door, there was this horrible smell of old smoke from zigarettes. The people, who must have stayed before us in this room, must have smoked hundreds of zigarettes. We immediateley called the reception and asked politeley if we could change the room because of the smell. She told us that it was not possible because the hotel was fully booked. In fact, that was not true. At breakfast in the morning, not even half of the tables available were occupied oder ready to use. The beach and the pool was OK. The manager wrote us later that they do not have non-smoking rooms. I do not understand that because almost everey hotel I stayed at in the last 2 years has had non-smoking rooms. So, just make sure that you demand a smoke free room and everything should be fine.

Please note that this a “Novotel Resort” and not like a regular “Novotel” so the facilities and standards are not the same. Secondly, I would like to add a warning for anyone who is planning to come from Pierrefonds airport. There is no direct public transport from Pierrefonds to anywhere in the north or centre of the Island. Flights to Pierrefonds may be cheaper but you will pay at least 80-130 Euros in one-way taxi fee between this Novotel and Pierrefond. The hotel does have arrangements for travel between Roland Garros, which is much cheaper.

Bedroom – As many other reviewers have mentioned, it really could do with a new coat of paint. My room had definite signs of damp on the walls near the aircon unit. You get a desk unit and adequate storage spaces. An in-room safe and a fridge are provided. No iron or ironing board, which I have always had at every other Novotel I’ve used. Instead you have to use the “ironing room” near reception which has just one iron and ironing board so it could be inconvenient if several people want to use it as once. TV has no English language channels whatsoever, not even BBC News or CNN, which was a little annoying. Free wifi made up for that though. There is decent amount of closet space

Bathroom – split in two with separate WC and shower rooms. Not a very practical way of doing things as other reviewers have mentioned. Seeing as this is a French hotel in a French territory I would have expected a bidet so disappointed there wasn’t one. usual Novotel toiletries, which are of a decent quality. Towels didn’t smell clean – faint whiff of body odour. Shower over bath, which unfortunately was loose so you have to hold the shower head to shower as it won’t stay up on the wall. Saw a lot of ants in the bathroom(s).

Facility – We did suffer the occasional powercut, but it never lasted too long. There are two large pools. Lots of entertainment and activities for kids. Tennis courts. A bar and restaurant where the main meals are available. There is also a Europcar car rental desk and a Tourist Excursions desk too, both of which are very useful.

Locale – this is a fantastic location. The beautiful L’Hermitage beach is at the back of the hotel. Come out of the front entrance and turn right and you will soon come across a supermarket, ATM, lots of restaurants and retail outlets. Buy your food and drink here, as the hotel prices are bad value for money.

Language barrier – when it comes to complaints here about language issues, I think this one comes down to your attitude. If you are visiting any of the Indian Ocean islands then it’s sensible to learn a little bit of French beforehand. If you are visiting Reunion then it is foolish NOT to learn some French beforehand. This is, technically, a part of France after all. I picked up and rifled through a phrasebook a week before I arrived and even though my French was very poor, everyone I dealt with in Reunion, both inside and outside the hotel, was appreciative that I was at least making an effort. I would recommend at least some basic preparation.

Dear Sir, Line G (Saint-Denis / Saint Benoit) "Car Jaune" Bus Network stops at Roland Garros Airport from Monday to Sunday and public holidays. By taking this line, you can go to the bus station in Saint-Denis.Then, you can take the line A or A1 Express (Saint-Denis / Saint-Pierre) to reach our hotel. It will take approximately 1 hour. Look forward to receive you soon, Sincerely yours,

Bonsoir.
