This hotel is great. Perfect location, super friendly employees and the room is spacious and always clean. Breakfast is very good, extremely amount of choices to eat. I think the hotel should be a 4 star and not only 3. Close to the beach and great swimming pools

First thing to realise about Reunion Island is that tourism wise is 20 years behind most other places that are well developed tourist locations. It is very reminisent of European locations in the 1980s and up and coming places such as Tunisa and Turkey in the 1990s, so remember this hotel in that context.
The hotel itself is quite pleasent with blocks of accomodaion spread out across a green area with two pools and two minutes walk from the beach. The rooms were OK- only criticism would be a lack of drawers and wardrobe space, but other than that, clean and functional. The breakfast was continental, but quite filling and buffet style. The fresh orange juice you could squeeze yourself was great, but the high number of birds flying around the breakfast area was rathr annoying. Evening activity was non existent and everyone semed to go to bed by 9pm, but up for breakfast at 6am!
The beach area was shared with the local population and could do with a clean up, but the mini reef right outside the hotel beach was interesting- even saw a lion fish!
The food in Hermatage at local restaurants was generally not great, but if you head to Saint Gilles, the food is amazing in a most of the restaurants there.
The island of Reunion itself is amazing and you must travel to all of the cirques, explore the mountains and volcanoes and travel the isolated villages- I could write a book on the adventures outside of the hotel/ town, but find out for yourself and discover this hidden gem of an island.

I spent 8 days in February 2013 with my daughter of 5 years old in this hotel. The location of the hotel is great, close to St Gilles and to Hermitage, parking provided, beautiful setting next to the beach, very pretty hotel and the individual rooms are great. Airconditionning works perfectly. There are many families with children, so my daughter had lots of kids to play with. The breakfast buffet is large, but not very interesting. The cooked breakfast is made well in advance and is cold by the time it comes on your plate. Both restaurants are not very good at all, I did not have any nice food in the hotel during my 8 day stay. Very average, very tasteless, always the same food and hugely overpriced. I took my daughter many times by car to restaurants in town to get some decent food at cheaper prices. This was a big down point of this holiday. The staff at reception and in the beach restaurant is not pleasant, it feels like in the Caribbean, I guess service is not the strongest point for the Reunion islands. The swimming pool was low quality, the whole bottom of the pool was coming lose and it really needs fixing. The pool is however built so cheaply that the problem will probably always persist. No mini bar in the superior rooms (in fact there is an empty fridge, but I don't call this a mini bar).
the hotel was not cheap and I was disappointed, I won't go back there. Sorry ! (When I arrived at 11 am it was 35 degrees celsuis and we just did a 15 hour flight via Paris, we are tired and sweaty. The reception did not let us go to our rooms until exactly 14.00 hours, they insisted not to let us have the room any time earlier).

Nice location directly at the beach. Rooms clean and ok. Restaurant area dirty. Many birds and stray cats (even on the tables) during breakfast and dinner. Bird droppings over all chairs. It seemed that there was staff shortage in order to really take care of cleaning.

St Denis was over booked so the company booked me into Hotel Le Recife. Generally very good, right on the beach and the most amazing reef there! So make sure you have you bring your snorkel if not then the hotel supply'ss free of charge.

Its a place were the French holiday so BE CAREFULL as everything is French (obviously) I was not put off by this as it was an added novelty and it was an oppurtunity to practice my French.

One thing i have to commend is the helpful staff at the reception namely Ursula and her colleaque whose name escapes me, but WOW these two people are an absolute credit to their organisation.

It is pricey in Reunion so beware! especially if you come from South Africa. I was paying approx R70 a draught beer but there is a supermarket very close-by that sells all you need.

We are habitual island people and we chose Réunion as our holiday of choose this December. We chose hotel Le Recif merely because their sister hotel Lux St Gilles increased the price of the holiday so much in the space of ten day that we felt they didn’t deserve the business. St Gilles cited in May of 2017 that the prices had gone up because the hotel was getting full so I told our travel agent to pull the other one and we moved on.

A few things to note about Reunion island which has nothing to do with the hotel. Bring a part of France, English there is a major problem. This doesn’t mean that you won’t get by there but you will battle. Google translate is your friend there. All the tours we went on were in French so unless you speak French, you will just go along for the scenery.

Please sort out all your Forex at the airports as our hotel and their sister hotel never did forex exchanges for Euros. I can’t speak for other hotels but this seems to be the norm there. We were fortunate enough to have somebody at the hotel drive us to the local town to draw Monday from an ATM so we had money to book tours and move around.

Being from South Africa there is only one airline that will take you there. It arrives at the island at about 10pm at night and you leave to return to South Africa and 10am in the morning, so one loses a day of holiday so to speak. Air Austral is a basic airline with no onboard entertainment except for a communal movie in French, so please take a book or something to keep you busy for the four hour flight.

Because the island is part of France, it is a Euro based economy so being from South Africa and our weak currency things can get very expensive. You have to switch off and ignore the prices or tighten your belt. The hotel also did not offer a full board option so all drinks and lunches had to be paid for.

Back to the hotel. We arrived quiet late at night and we were greeted by the receptionist who helped us check in. We booked a superior room for our accommodation and we were taken to our room. The room we were taken to looked nothing like the brochure on the hotels web site. It was tiny with barely enough room to move and a bathroom so small that I could touch either side with my arms spread out. We returned to reception to complain and we were told that that was a superior room. We went on the internet to show them the pictures of the said room on their web site to which we were told that that was one of their suites and not a superior room. A little bit of false advertising there so be careful when booking. They kindly offered to give as a junior suite for the night but said that they would move us in the morning. So, needless to say our first evening was spent in hotel limbo, not being able to unpack and get our holiday started worrying what horrors the next day would bring. We went to reception in the morning after breakfast to sort our room issue out and they agreed to let us stay in the suite for the duration of our stay which we felt was very decent of the hotel.

Now back to the hotel as it is. I must say, despite the hotel being a three star it does grow on you and it is very quaint. The gardens are well maintained and tropical. It has two large swimming pools where one can lounge around and be lazy. The room we stayed in being a junior suite was lovely and spacious. There is a television in the room but all the channels are in French so take a hard drive with you if you want to watch a movie or two. There is a mini bar in the room whereby one has to order a mini bar package or snacks and beverages. The bathroom was well appointed and spacious but don’t expect anything in a standard room. You will have to take turns in the bathroom. The air conditioning worked well and kept us cool as a cucumber for our stay.

There is no room service at the hotel and there is a laundry service and large safe n the rooms to lock away valuables.

One major plus for the hotel is that the WiFi is everywhere in the resort. We never found a dead spot or instances where the signal dropped and we had to log in again. It’s fast enough for basic messaging and internet browsing but not enough for video chats and streaming movies. But, hey who goes on holiday to spend it glued to a phone.

The food in the hotel was very basic and always served as a buffet. The breakfast was very basic and pretty much the same everyday with negligible changes to the offering. Ordering eggs are a major problem as the chefs don’t speak English. Fortunately, being a chef I have a basic knowledge of French cooking terms but I feel sorry for those who don’t speak French. The buffet seems to have a big problem with birds eating the bread and food off peoples tables. I found this very disturbing for hygiene reasons. I wish they would do something about that. They do cover the food but people invariably leave the food uncovered which attracts the birds.

Lunch is also in buffet form by the bar but we tried this once and found it disappointing with no value for money. We rather enjoyed the baguettes they offered on their menu.

Dinners were also served as a buffet and the food was sometimes nice and sometimes very disappointing. The hotel did pull all the stops out for Christmas Eve and we were treated to a wonderful dinner with lovely food and champagne.

There is a beach close by to the resort, but one has to exit the resort and walk about 100 meters to get there. This is a public beach so it can get a bit crowded but nothing to overwhelming. The ocean in front of the resort is a bit rough and not your typical glassy, turquoise oceans found in The Maldives and Mauritius. Being an avid snorkeler there wasn’t much to look at and I spent most of my time fighting the currents. We did however find a nice beach with calmer water about 1,5 kilometers from the resort. There we could snorkel and enjoy the coral reefs and ocean life although one still had to be a strong swimmer as the currents and waves did toss me around a bit.

Booking tours can be a problem as only certain tours operate on certain days and as mentioned, are all in French.

One has to precook a taxi should you want to venture out on your own and Uber does not operate in the country to allow more spontaneity should you want to wander around the island.

Other than that, we did enjoy our stay at the hotel in the end and I really think the island could become a major tourist destination for English speaking people should the country be willing to adapt. Being there was almost like being in Mauritius 15 years ago. They wanted the tourism but weren’t geared for it. Currently it’s just an Island where French citizens go on holiday.

I stayed at the Recif for a week and it was a lovely hotel, very clean, rooms done every day. Good food, Nice pools and right next to lagoon where its safe to swim. Not too noisy or overcrowded, although other residents seemed to be early risers when I was there starting from 5.40AM upstairs to me.

Nothing exceptional, not bad but not great, we can easily find much better for this price, the place is not new and it is visible, very basic, small bedroom, it doesn't look like a paradise at all, it looks cheap and it is expensive, for an hotel located on the beach at saint-gilles the potential is not used at all, i don't recommend it.

We arrived at about noon, the end of a 23 hour journey, where we were completely ignored on arrival. When we checked in, it took a while and the staff would choose others over us. When we arrived at the room, it was very small, and dark. The free internet let one person at a time on it, and was extremely slow. When we handed in our laundry for cleaning it was temporarily lost. Nothing I can think of that was positive about this resort.

I stayed here with my wife for twelve days. I was here for a conference for work, followed by a few days of vacation. The rooms were clean and well maintained. The hotel staff was very friendly and was able to communicate effectively. The breakfasts were also quite nice. My wife and I would definitely recommend using the orange juicer for making your own orange juice. Very tasty!

The hotel is located in St. Gilles les Bains, which is quite convenient if you're interested in spending time on the beach. There are quite a few restaurants within a one mile walking distance.
