I stayed in Herzen House in St. Petersburg for 3 days in July with my daugther and a friend, and I would highly recommend it to anyone. The hotel was very clean and comfortable, staff was very nice and responsive, cozy breakfeast room with good food, plus tea and coffee 24 hours, and internet access at reception area. Hotel is small and family friendly, makes you feel at home. It's in an old building, but everything was recently renovated.
Location of the hotel is great - short walk to Hermitage and many other museums and historical places.
There are many good places to eat nearby - just ask the hotel staff. Across the street - 24-hour convenience store and 24-hour automated currency exchange center.

I recently stayed at the Herzen House for 7 nights at the end of August to early September. I had a sunny clean comfortable size room with a view over the street and easy 24 hour access. Included in the price was a well cooked standard breakfast every morning, scrambled eggs juice sausages tea etc. The location is ideal with good security using a buzzer from the street and electronic key card to the room. But what made the stay highly enjoyable was the very friendly welcoming young staff ready to accommodate for any request. I called them direct as all speak good English and everything was arranged very quickly. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a hassle free relaxing stay in St Petersburg.

We stayed here at the beginning of June 2007. The location is great (5 minutes' walk to the Hermitage and Nevsky Prospect), and the hotel rooms are quiet. Nearby, there are lots of places for food. The staff are friendly and helpful, the rooms are clean and comfortable. Highly recommended.

In general: the location of this hotel was easy to find and very central. It is close to metro station, Hermitage, Nyevsky Prospect and many other major points of interest. Arriving at Herzen House, we were greeted by Irina who locked our luggage in a storage room for safekeeping until our room was ready and gave us introductory tips for a short stroll and lunch. Upon our return, our (superior) room was ready (Despite initially booking a comfort room, having read the tips here at tripadvisor we requested an upgrade for a superior via e-mail. The hotel staff were so nice to offer it to us free of charge). Irina also booked a cab for our return journey to train station and gave us a wake up call about six in the morning.

Room: It was clean, practically designed and contained a pair of robes, slippers and a safe for our valuables. Bathroom was especially good with proper water pressure and heat, which is a treat given the poor infrastructure in St. Petersburg. Beds were comfortable and as a pair of heavy sleepers we weren't disturbed by anything throughout the two nights we stayed there, despite the fact that our window was looking towards the street. TV didn't contain much international channels but we didn't spend much time in the room anyways. The free wi-fi worked properly.

Minus points: A sharp smell of garlic welcomes you into the building. Although it is the unofficial smell of Russian cities in general, it is not particularly nice to experience it at the entrance. There was also an empty minibar in the room which didn't work very well. When we ordered beers from the reception after a very long and tiring day of walking around the city, we have been given a couple of lukewarm bottles from a cabinet in the corridor and minibar didn't do much to cool them even after an hour. Also the building's lift didn't work on the morning of our departure so we had to carry our luggage four floors down. And finally, the hotel offers the guests free tea, coffee, water and biscuits in the breakfast room all day long. It's a nice touch but this service did not seem to be maintained very well. Biscuits were far from being fresh and tasted quite bad. When we wanted to get a couple of glasses of water from the fountain before going to bed, two nights in a row there was no glass.

Final verdict: You can count on the safety, cleanliness, basic services and location of Herzen House but must not expect more than that - which is quite OK in St. Petersburg where hotels are rarely what they claim to be and presumably they are distributed stars in exchange for personal friends one makes in bureaucracy.

The Hotel location is good as it is only a 5-10 minute walk from Nevsky Prospect and we walked to the Marinsky Theatre from the Hotel where we saw a ballet that was in our opinion a better performance by far than the ballet that we saw at the Bolshoi in Moscow and the tickets were hundreds of dollars cheaper at the Marinsky than they were at the Bolshoi (70 dollars as opposed to about 350 dollars each at the Bolshoi).

The basic rooms are small and the décor is old. The Hotel itself and its basic rooms are not up market at all. I think that there are some larger better rooms but we only paid for a basic room which was still quite expensive. The shower water pressure was very strong and was one of the best showers I have encountered in a long line of hotels.

Some people would find the bed a bit uncomfortable but it was not a problem for us. WIFI in the room worked well most of the time.

The breakfast is a bit basic but there is enough to get a start to the day on. The room/hotel was quiet, i.e. no traffic noise in rooms that look into the courtyard which was where ours was located.

The main issue for us was that during summer when daylight stays well into the early hours of the morning, the blinds in our room were all broken and the curtains were only lace and you could not get the room dark enough to easily fall asleep. The Hotel really, really needs to get new curtains or blinds as a matter or urgency.

All staff including breakfast staff were nice, well groomed, pleasant, and helpful and they spoke English and passed on any messages that were left at the desk for us. The breakfast staff were vigilant with refilling items at breakfast and were constantly making sure there was enough food for the number of people eating breakfast.

As with all Hotels you weigh up what you get for the price. I thought it was a little pricey for the standard we got but at the time I had difficulty finding another hotel in that location that was much cheaper so that’s why I went with it and it turned out to be fine for us but I could see how some people would be disappointed. Value for money accommodation is getting difficult to find and we were told that Hotels are expensive in Moscow and St Petersburg but we find that hotels are expensive almost everywhere unless you jump on a good deal somehow.

My advice would be not to book if you will be spending a lot of time in the hotel as its basic and not luxury by anyone’s standards but if you are out all day as we were then it was OK for a 4 day stay.

I very much agree with the other reviewers that this hotel is a very good value for the money. It was clean, the breakfast was decent (and included), it is an excellent location, the staff were very kind and helpful, and the management obviously work hard to attain a high standard of quality in this price range.

For those travellers who are interested, I did want to report that the wifi internet in the rooms is not sufficient to do any work that requires a sufficient and reliable connection, such as skype, instant messaging, or watching video. There were continual dropped connections and the bandwidth seemed to be very dependent on what others were doing on the internet. The hotel does provide a computer that uses a more reliable internet connection and is therefore able to do skype. However, that is in the lobby of the hotel and therefore a private skype conversation is not possible. If you are only interested in checking email, or don't mind using the computer in the lobby then you don't need to worry about this.

Since free wifi is very attractive to some guests (increasing more and more as people carry wireless devices) and this hotel advertises this, I hope the management will pay attention to this issue. Please have a computer expert look at the issue as this appears to be more of a problem than simply a signal strength issue (you may need to look into bandwidth issues). I would also put into place a plan to monitor the system for problems so that they can be fixed right away when they occur. Wifi internet is becoming more important to more people and some business travellers want to save money but still require dependable internet.

I see that one other person mentioned this in a tripadvisor review earlier this year. I did not see that review before I booked, and so I felt I need to highlight this for

Thanks to your staff for making my stay in Peter such a friendly and comfortable one.

Response from Nataliaspb, General Manager at Herzen House
Responded 5 Mar 2012
Dear Sfchris, First of all I would like to thank you for choosing Herzen House Hotel and submitting a review. Many thanks for such warm review and specially for appraisal of management work. The management really works hard to make the best for comfortable stay and create high standards and warm atmosphere. I’m trying to solve problems with Wi-Fi connection. We’ve tried different ways already but it’s still works not good. Looks like the problem is the hotel located in the old building with very special walls preventing a good signal. Now when we are in way to increase number of rooms we can do other attempts. I will be happy personally to report you about situation. If you have any questions or requests please do not to hesitate to contact me: natalia@herzen-hotel.ru We look forward to welcoming you back. Kindly asking you to let me know if it happens. I will be happy to meet you and all staff will be happy to give you special attention and some VIP complimentary services. Yours respectfully, Natalia Stepanova

Great service provided at this hotel. Nice rooms, shower/tub and excellent breakfast with much variety. The best thing is that it is right in the heart of the city, about a 5 minute walk to Nevsky Prospect and not even 10 minutes to the Hermitage. They recommended me a local Greek restaurant near the hotel my first night and I was not dissapointed .

The Herzen House bills itself as is a mini-hotel, meaning that it provides all the essential services (including breakfast, internet access, laundry, and luggage storage), but lacks frills such as a fancy lobby, exercise room, or bar. It occupies one floor of a larger building, with a different hotel on the two floors below. It is located just a couple of blocks from major sights like St. Isaac's and the Hermitage -- and costs much, much less than the standard hotels in the neighborhood. It is, quite simply, an incredible value.

Our room (a superior double) was pleasant and quite spacious, with lots of closet space, large windows, modern decor, and a comfortable bed. The bathroom was also relatively large by European standards, with attractive tile work. The staff at the front desk spoke good English (not necessarily a given in Russia) and proved to be extremely helpful when we ran into difficulties with the company that had sold us ballet tickets. Breakfast was the weakest part of the experience: the breakfast room is somewhat spartan, and the food was adequate but uninspired (it was a scaled back version of the usual cereal, yogurt, bread, meat, cheese, and eggs). On the other hand, coffee, tea, and cookies were available, for free, all day and evening -- an amenity that we took advantage of quite a few times after returning tired and footsore from sightseeing.

Unless you need a five-star experience, or simply want to pour money down the drain, I can heartily recommend the Herzen House. During our six-night stay, it really did become a home away from home.

As well as being reasonably priced, the location was excellent, easy walking distance from the Hermitage. The staff was friendly and very helpful. The room was comfortable and the breakfast above average in selection of food items. The hotel was located on the 4th floor with elevator service. A truly good value and would not hesitate to stay there again.

We stayed at the hotel for four nights at the end of April. The staff were all very friendly and helpful with restaurant tips (which were all very good) as well as all the questions about how to get to various places. The room was very clean and certainly adequate. Breakfast was good and any type of egg could be ordered separately. The location is perfect for all the main sights and if you want to go further afield, there is a metro station within a short distance. We are planning to go back to this hotel again when we visit St. Petersburg.
