There are ryokans and then there is Shiraume. Before staying our first night here, we could only have perceived a snatch of her potential from photographs of the tasteful decor and poetic views of the glistening river. We wouldn't have expected the extensive yet delicately composed Japanese breakfast which kept one full till afternoon tea - a modest dessert, so...

As traditional Ryokans go, you will not find any better. From the moment you are greeted you know that this is not just a bed for the night but an experience. The knowledge of the area, the service and most of all the food. If you want a special experience then make sure that you book.

Let me just say that after we departed Kyoto, I sent Tomoko, our hostess at Shiraume, a multi paragraph note of thanks for her tremendous assistance, advice, warmth and hospitality during our stay. My first personal thank you note to a hotel. Our time at Shiraume was utterly delightful. We felt incredibly spoiled and well cared for at every turn....

I have traveled extensively and stayed at the fanciest and most luxurious hotels and resorts. To give you an idea of my taste, my favorites before this stay were Banyan Tree Mayakoba and Ritz Carlton Central Park. Never have I experienced such a lovely, inviting and beautiful stay as at Shiraume. All I can say is if you can afford...

We were an hour earlier than check in time but were greeted with such a warm welcome. It is such a pretty and well thought out accomodation with only 5 rooms and thoughtfully decked out in handmade Japanese crafts. We stayed in the Umekoyomi room overlooking the creek and it was just beautiful. Exquisite traditional ryokan equipped with all the...

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights back in November and it took me longer than usual to write this review because it is very difficult to put an experience of a life time into words. I am still in awe of the beauty of this Ryokan. Shiraume is located on the most picturesque street in Gion, right...

We stayed here during our honeymoon in Japan and it was the highlight of our trip. The manager, Tomoko Okuda, and her staff were so kind and helpful and had so much knowledge about the history of Japan and Kyoto that we had no question left unanswered. Everything felt authentic and the little library area where we enjoyed our evening...

Words cannot express the hospitality of this ryokan. Tomoko is the perfect host and made us feel so comfortable. This was our first experience in a ryokan and I was nervous that I would do something wrong. The staff was quick to help me when I had any questions. English is spoken and Tomoko was so helpful, she even planned...

This ryokan, located on a beautiful, traditional street in Kyoto yet just steps away from prime shopping and dining areas has got to be the best service we have EVER experienced. My husband and I have stayed in 5 star/top rated hotels both large and small, as well as luxury bed and breakfasts all over the world and THIS PLACE...

My wife and I stayed unfortunately only 1 night at this traditional ryokan (as it was fully booked) around the end of December. This was one of our most memorable hotel stay ever. Located in a surprisingly calm stretch right in Gion right in the heart of Kyoto, you access the ryokan by crossing a small canal over the ryokan's...

Staying in Gion

Neighbourhood Profile
Gion
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.
