This is a beautiful hotel, and a no-smoking property, which was important to us. We were upgraded to a suite and had a good stay. Though it’s no surprise that a Four Seasons is expensive, this one seems to go a bit over the top. Part of the sticker shock comes from the huge taxes that are added onto the already high room rate (not the hotel’s fault, but be aware). The tea house is cute, but when we were there they had run out of “confections.” We decided against a $25 cup of tea. The property sits between a girl’s school (which we found endearing) and a temple that isn’t in the guidebooks, but is worth exploring. There are not a lot of restaurants or shops in the immediate area. (The fluffy pancakes at Cafe Arietty across the street are wonderful, though). Since the sights in Kyoto are spread out, we ended up taking (and often waiting for) a lot of taxis. The staff is young, some really friendly, some a little bit formal. All in all, a beautiful property, a little out of the way. Expect to pay top dollar for everything, but indisputably a first class hotel.

Dear dha205, Thank you very much for your recent stay and your valuable feedback. I am happy to learn that you have enjoyed our hotel experience, especially our suite. However, I regret to hear that you felt our hotel is slightly far from the city and the pricing is expensive. Yet, please note that Kyoto remains one of Japan's best-preserved historic cities, with intact palaces, gardens, 1600 Buddhist temples and 400 Shinto shrines, including 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In such a city, Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto is located in Higashiyama district, close to many of Kyoto’s finest cultural assets – from the Kiyomizu-dera Temple to Kyoto National Museum, and Sanju-sangendo temple, a national treasure, all within an easy walk. We hope you have taken advantage of the closeness to the beautiful historical destinations in Kyoto. We hope to welcome you back to Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto. Yours sincerely, Alex Porteous General Manager

This is a very nice hotel that falls short in a few meaningful ways. The hotel is well-located and has a dramatic entrance. On arrival, a bellman directed us to sit in the waiting area but did not explain we were to wait for a receptionist to check us in. I was a bit confused as the front desk was empty but he insisted. We had a two bedroom residence suite in a prime cherry blossom garden view location which we appreciated receiving. The garden and grounds are peaceful and beautiful and you actually can walk into town. The hotel and room decor is nice but doesn’t seem like it will hold up well over time. I don’t understand why residence suites are considered an upgrade; with the kitchen and wood veneer floors, the room oddly feels like a decent condo, not a luxurious suite. I liked the bedrooms better than the living/dining room area. The beds and sheets are very comfortable. It wasn’t exactly to my taste but enjoyable. Interestingly, while much older, I liked the decor at the Park Hyatt Tokyo better as it had a classic, homey, urban elegance.

Their food is generally very good (much better than the Park Hyatt Tokyo); we had several good meals there. Their cheeseburger is excellent if you need a break from sushi one night. Service is also generally very good, except the concierge, who never picks up the phone or responds to emails. Fortunately, i had the benefit of the very friendly and helpful new GM and her office to respond to requests. I think I got special treatment because she found I out I had moved from the Ritz Carlton (see separate review). On that note, everyone was very welcoming of me and my partner. They also recognized my birthday with a cake, special bottle of tea as we non-drinkers, flowers and other treats. They had a lot of little touches and remembered our names which made our time memorable.

I think with a stronger concierge and a little more polish this would be 5 stars. We would stay here again though.

I stayed here for 2 nights and I absolutely love this hotel. The room was very big even though it was not a suite. I really liked the layout and design of the room especially the bathroom. The view from my room was nothing special. Pillows and bed were cosy as always. It also offered a non-private butler service. You could control the room lightings, air-con and ask for room service using the iPad placed near the bed. The minibar was stocked with a wide range of drinks and snacks.

Service was very good during my visit. Staff were attentive and the front desk officer escorted me to my room after check-in and introduced the hotel's facilities. People were nice and helpful.

Breakfast was good. The restaurant was so beautiful and comfortable. If you sit near the window, you can enjoy the view of the hotel's own pond. The pond has a long history (~100 years). I went straight to the outdoor area after I had had my breakfast to enjoy the stunning environment.

Geiko came and perform at the lobby every weekend. People could take pictures with her after the performance. In addition, the hotel offered a wide range of activities and special experiences.

Since my stay was during the weekend, the hotel was crowded. People came here for banquet/wedding. This hotel is popular for the locals.

Dear peterchan_hkg, Thank you very much for your recent stay and your kind compliment. I am honoured to read your compliment of our team and about our facilities and services throughout your stay from the restaurant, guest room, our 800-year-old Shakusui-en pond garden and to the Maiko performance on weekends. As you have experienced, our rooms are equipped with high technology, I hope you have enjoyed using in-room iPad, automatic toilet, butler box etc... Our guestrooms carry out the characteristics of a traditional Japanese house. From the quiet and elegantly simple lines of the wooden slats to fusuma screens decorated with artwork by local artisans inspired by Kyoto's heritage that is intentionally designed to emphasize the influence of Kyoto's nature, you can feel the essences of Japan even inside of the room. I wish you and your family stay safe and we hope to welcome you back to Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto in the near future. Yours sincerely, Alex Porteous General Manager

Such a sadly disappointing stay at The Four Seasons. It could have been so fantastic but was let down by poor service and just not being up to the standard you normally expect from a Four Seasons property. On the plus side, good location, close to all the main tourist sites, we were upgraded from a premier garden room to a suite, which for our longer stay was greatly appreciated. The gardens which our room and terrace looked out on to and the traditional tea house are beautiful, especially in cherry blossom season, spa and pool/gym also great. Breakfast was total chaos, 25 min wait for a coffee, food constantly running out and under staffed rushing around. Whilst everyone was very apologetic it became frustrating by our final day. Dinner in the brasserie was nice if a little underwhelming but it’s a lovely setting and thankfully quieter than the breakfast mayhem! House keeping seemed to never re-stock our room, lovely local treats on arrival but nothing the following days, not even a little something at turn down. Toiletries were not replenished unless we called house keeping. Check out and a promised taxi to the station that was a 10 min wait was not a great end to our stay. It’s busy in Japan post Covid and in cherry blossom season so we were very aware that the hotel was struggling. I hope things improve as it could be so fantastic.

Ok, this review is in the context of the price of the hotel. I stayed in a 2 bedroom suite during high season. The rate was around $4000 USD per night. So I suppose I expect a commensurate level of service. Overall it solid, but it was also nothing special. There is much hype about the xx hundred year old garden/lake. Whist it is pretty in some angles, most of the rooms have only oblique/restricted views of it. The nicest views appear reserved for the residence apartments, not hotel rooms. Staff service and attentiveness was inconsistent, certainly one did not get a sense of guests being warmly welcomed and made to feel special. The staff in the cafe were particularly unimpressive - unfriendly and unhelpful. Similarly service from some of the concierge and reception staff was just going through the motions, without any enthusiasm. A few times we were in the lobby / driveway obviously waiting for assistance, and staff just walked by without making an effort to greet us and ask how they could assist. Sorry, at this price level I expect to be impressed. I wasn't.

We stayed at the Four Seasons Kyoto for three nights in October during our family trip through Japan. The hotel is absolutely stunning. We were upgraded to a huge suite with private garden as I was travelling with an injured leg and could not leave the hotel very much. We met the general manager during check in and she said that if I had to stay at the hotel most of the time they would want to provide me with a beautiful room. What a lovely gesture. We met her again the next morning during breakfast time wehre she went to introduce herself to everyone and to have a small chat with guests. My husband and myself both used the spa and were very happy with treatments. My son and husband used the pool every day which they liked a lot. We had food through room service (the risotto was the best I have ever had). Funnily enough the young lady who served room service was from near our home town in Germany (Hi Mel !). We also at the main restaurant and had drinks in the lobby lounge area. It is also the little details that make a difference. I left my reading glasses out on the desk and when I came back they were on a hotel branded glasses cleaing cloth. And my computer mouse was provided with a hotel branded little mouse pad. Before staying there I was in contact with one of the concierges who helped me create an itinary of what my son and husband should see during our stay in Kyoto. Their recommendations for sightseeing and also outside restaurants were great. The staff in general was very polite and helpful. We cannot fault anything at the hotel. As I was not able to go out much we will definately return. And I can only recommend anyone else to stay there as well.

We have such a long bucket list, going back for 2nd visits isn't usually a high priority for us. Our stay at the Four Seasons Kyoto changed our mind. We'd go back in a heartbeat. Suite #201 had 1 king bedroom with a massive master bath.... dual vanity, huge soaking tub in separate area from freestanding glass shower, separate make-up vanity, long row of closet space with bench for getting ready. Seated dining area for 4-5 and separate powder bath in the spacious living area. Views are amazing. Floor to ceiling glass in both living area and bedroom overlook pond, expansive gardens and tea house. Four Seasons service only enhanced by an exceptional staff. They were great with our 2 kids! (Speaking of kids, you'd never know there's a primary school just outside the walls except when traffic is stopped in front of the hotel for 30 minutes in the morning to allow the children to cross the driveway.) This property is so beautiful. We didn't make time for a tea service while we were here, but do spend time enjoying cocktails on the terrace... you'll never want to leave.

The Four Seasons Hotel is an upscale 5* hotel located in Kyoto. It faces a very picturesque and traditional pond. Beautiful to look at and have an aperitif in front of.

In terms of location, it’s perfect from a touristic point of view. All the main landmarks are walking distance or easy to reach with quick cab ride.

The rooms are minimalistic, but elegant and clean. I particularly like how they used mainly wood for the outside and inside of the hotel.

The staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming.
The concierge was very knowledgable of all the new places around the city, which certainly helped making our visit even more pleasant.

The Brasserie restaurant isn’t bad, but lacks a bit in character. It offer a bit of everything but nothing in particular. However if you’re looking for a quick lunch it does the job.

If you are looking for any help from the concierge team I strongly recommend staying away from this hotel. The concierge service at this Four Seasons is NON EXISTENT. We picked the Four Seasons this time because it is our big family trip for my parents 40th wedding anniversary but now we don’t know what to do since the Four Seasons concierge does not even bother to respond to our email.

I sent them an email on 3/14 and did hear back until 7 days later (I even followed up with 2 more emails). When I finally got a response on 3/21 I replied right away but it has been another 5 days and complete radio silence despite 2 more follow up emails.

At this point we are forced to look at other hotel alternatives even though the trip is 3 weeks away, which means all the reservation will be last min and even more difficult to book.

We are also staying at Intercontinental Ôsaka and Park Hyatt in Kyoto for this trip and both have an average 1-2 day response time from their concierge. We are shocked at the concierge service provided by the Four Seasons. We completely understand if the hotel is busy and need a 2-3 day turn around time, but to ignore a customers email for 7 days and another 5 days is unacceptable.

Do not stay at the Four Seasons unless you want your trip to end up like ours, 3 weeks out, nothing confirmed, and not a word from concierge.

It's something of a recurring theme for Japan hotels to be fairly scandalously priced, but having just left Tokyo, I (mistakenly) assumed that hotel prices would be much cheaper elsewhere, only to discover that the Kyoto Four Seasons was asking even more. A word of advice: always check hotel prices online as in Japan you can very often get a much better rate than what they'll offer you at the desk. A quick check on my phone saved me a huge amount here.

The hotel kindly upgraded me to a suite (133), but as a solo traveller I found the room to be way too big (living room, kitchen, dining area, 2 beds, 2 bathrooms), and the room, while extremely spacious, didn't have much of a view and was a bit of a trek from the main hotel area. So I asked to be downgraded, and much preferred my subsequent regular room (556), which had a really nice view over the garden and koi pond.

Besides the price, my only complaint was that the food I found to be just OK, not great. The location though is really convenient, a short walk into town as well as walking distance to many beautiful temples.

I agree with the previous answer.. 3000 - 5000 per person... unfortunately there are few choice locally for breakfast due to location. There are some restaurants close by but they do not serve breakfast. I would suggest going to one of the convenience stores and buying some items, but be aware that fruit is rather expensive in Japan..

Yes as above for prices but ours was included. The menu options are great but the spread is OK for Four seasons, could be better compared to others. Asian and English buffet options had limited veg choices but for meat lovers, plenty of pork on offer.
