On our too-short trip to Japan we were torn between visiting Kyoto or a mountain ryokan. With Takao Kanko we got both! Less than an hour from Kyoto station, it's in another world -- clear rushing stream, mountain air, lush woods, hot baths. Service was like at a 5-star hotel -- our every wish was catered too. We enjoyed dinner...

We stayed here in low season so the hotel was quiet. It's in a very peaceful location by the river, which you can hear from your room. The staff were all wonderful & we felt like royalty. They made every effort to make our stay enjoyable, helping with day trips & travel arrangements. The food was fantastic, very very Japanese...

Stayed for one night in October, while visiting Kyoto. We wanted to see something different, and get to see the famous autumn leaves. We got both. The Ryokan is a bit old and dated (but we thought it was charming) but the location was beautiful. The Jingo-ji Temple was 350 steps up from the Ryokan, and it was a quiet...

This family run ryokan offers spacious rooms, authentic Japanese style service and generous meals for breakfast and dinner. The staff are very friendly and accommodating. However the hotel is very dated. We felt like we were in a 1970's time capsule. It also smells like smoke and wifi is only available in the lobby. the hotel is also very far...

Access is a little bad for this palace in the location with the regulation in the city to leave nature for in Kyoto, so I'm answering with shuttle buses, but I'm sorry to make them do poor concern. To have the room which connects and the room which doesn't connect, WiFi hurries correspondence. Thank you very much for your use.

Ok the most complex thing and most stressful thing is: how do i get there? From Kyoto: you can catch two types of buses. One is a Local Suburban bus and the other is JR bus you can use a SUICA on. The url for the suburban bus is as follows: http://www.arukumachikyoto.jp/bus_search.php?lang=en We used Bus 8 which starts from Shijo...

Please come to enjoy clean turning in autumn next. We look forward to seeing you again, I'm waiting. Thank you very much for your long stay this time.

We chose to stay here based on previous reviews. The area is perfect to relax. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Unfortunately the hotel is very dated and smells strongly of smoke in all areas. This was an issue for my husband and daughter who are both asthmatics. There was no option for a non smoking room. We felt...

Visited in April, amazing view, ridiculously friendly staff. Ask for sukiyaki, best I have had in japan. Is cooked for you by friendly old lady. Some difficulty getting there, cost us about $200 AUD taxi fare in three days of sight seeing. Rooms were very clean and nice. Slept like a baby on the tatami futon.

My friend picked out the Takao Kanko to experience an authentic Japanese ryokan. We were not disappointed. The room was clean and comfortable (for a futon mattress), and the bath temperature wasn't scalding hot -- we would later find out the baths at some ryokans are set to practically cook you alive. Breakfast the next morning was traditional Japanese, with...

If you want an incredible experience then this is the place to come. Staying in Northern Kyoto

Neighbourhood Profile
Northern Kyoto
Hot springs and historic temples characterize the leafy landscapes of Northern Kyoto. Acres of tranquil residential streets are interrupted by some of Kyoto's most gorgeous architectural gems, including the majestic Golden Pavilion of Kinkakuji, the serene artistry of the Ryoanji Temple rock gardens, and the bold red paint across the structures of Enryakuji Temple. Once a religious core of the city, the district now boasts some of its most remote and peaceful hot springs, as well as a few of its best family-run mom-and-pop restaurants. A blend of extremely local at its outskirts, and highly peopled at its tourist centers, Northern Kyoto nonetheless retains a halcyon air in harmony with nature.
