Stayed in the double room with small double bed for 4 nights. After a super small room in Osaka(Apa nihombashi), this room felt big and comfortable. Used bus in Kyoto, three bus stops quite near to the hotel, family Mart next door. Few eateries, a good Indian restaurant and a pub nearby. Nishi market is close by...Wifi is good. Room service every day. Staff was helpful, could understand English quite well.

We stayed at Hotel Oaks for 3 nights in May 2012 and had a great experience.

-The hotel isn't as modern looking as others, but the room was a really good size, clean and the bathroom was very user friendly, albeit small. Had the high tech toilet though which is always a novelty experience in Japan

-Hotel has wifi, always a win

-Hotel is located on the main street, Shijo Dori, and is a short walk away from all the main shops and train stations. 20ish min walk to Gion, but if you have a few very cheaply priced cans of Japanese beer you don't even notice the walk. Plus the walk is along the main street which is littered with shops, cafes, convenience stores etc

-Bus stop is across the road from the hotel and this will take you to the Golden Pavillion, Kyoto Station, Main shops, Gion etc etc....220 yen flat rate. Very handy getting from Kyoto station (bus 26 I believe, or could be 24 can't remember exactly).

-Service at hotel was great, always friendly. Price of hotel was awesome definitely cannot complain for it's location and cleanliness. Slept like a baby most nights and couldn't hear any street noise, but this may be due to amount of asahi consumed before bed.

-There is a convenience store located at the bottom of the hotel selling everything you could need, drinks, alcohol, beer, sake, hot food. Very handy.

-Be sure to visit the Bamboo Forrest in Arashiyama whilst you're there...and get lost in the back streets of Gion, at night you may come across a few geishas scurrying from house to house. They don't generally pose for photos so you may have to chase them, walk in front of them and get a snap

-Kyoto Studio Park was also fun...has old style Japanese buildings, you can do fun things like throw ninja stars, get lost in a ninja house of mystery or haunted house, see a manga display, watch a show being filmed

-Kyoto National Manga Museum was the highlight of our trip, due to their current exhibition. But impressive none the less at any time for manga fans

The hotel location in the Shijo Street and very convenience to the attraction area. You can walk for about 10 to 15 mins to the Nishi Market and others shops.

We also walk for aboue 20 mins to the Gion. Thus a small hotel with limited space but the facilitlies were excellent e.g. free wifi access, bathroom toiletries etc.

We stayed in this hotel for 5 nights. The staff were not friendly et al. The room was not clean and convenient. No room service available. They cannot understand English (this is usual in Japan but their english was far lower than average). The room that I booked included free wifi but there was no wifi available in the room. In addition, the internet speed in the public areas was very slow. The front desk staff refused to help in this regard. Overal I believe staying in this hotel was waste of money.

Hotel is very well located – it is central, on and near main streets, major bus stop is across the street, main subway lines are just down the street. It is easy to walk and to take public transportation to almost anywhere from this hotel. Gion is just a few stops down the street. Restaurants and shops are nearby. We found the staff to speak English well and they have been very helpful to us every time. Not only did they gave us maps and showed us the way, they called for us and helped to print things. Room was surprisingly big for Japan. It had a desk, 2 beds, couch, a coffee table, chair, and a closet. The bathroom facilities were split into 3 rooms: separately the toilet, sink and shower. Hotel and room are dated and could use a facelift, but clean. Room was on a high floor and windows gave a view of the major street in front, but it was not noisy. TV had a few channels in English. We had breakfast included with our room. While it was not extensive and I would not pay extra for it, breakfast was sufficient. Dining room is drab. Overall we were content with this hotel and it was a positive hotel experience in Kyoto.

This hotel was in a very good location in the middle of Kyoto and was within walking distance to shopping and restaurants. It was reasonably priced and rooms were comfortable although from our room there was no view, only of the neighbours hanging up their washing. We also had a car with us and while the hotel didn't have it's own carpark, there was an open air public one next door. The rooms are a bit dated but otherwise adequate.

The hotel reeks of cigarette smoke and so do the rooms. The rooms are small and the bathroom wasn't clean. The service was good and so was the location but it doesn't compensate for the rest. I would not recommend this hotel.

Good location and price.
It is not high price in Kyoto hotels.
The hotel is 8 minutes walk from Karasuma railway station. Or 25minutes walk from Gion.
There are supermarket and convenience store nearby.
The staff can speak English and they are kind. The room is not roomy, but clean. I had get a lot of service.Wifi-free spot, deodorizing spray, laundromat, Free japanese news paper. It held my baggage after checkout, so I could walk around light luggage.
I recommend the hotel to you.

Rooms not a bad size but could have been cleaner. However all linen clean.
The bed/pillows were rather hard and lumpy. The bed hurt my hips lying on my side. Fortunately slept well however as the full days sightseeing in temperatures approaching a 100F were draining.
Did not eat in hotel as on one day we tried breakfast bar closed as was a holiday although the more expensive buffet was open. Plenty of places to eat in immediate vicinity however and only a few minutes walk to station.

Not well known hotel, but it quite cheap and not far from Kawaramichi, the shopping street of Kyoto.
The most thing that I like is service mind of Hotel's receptions.
I and my friend walked too much and got the pain in our legs.
The receptions not only tell the way to drug store, but also gave us the medicine before.
I and my friend were impressed by this.
Furthermore, they can spoke and communicated in English quite well.

Hi Carmen - I recall an underground car park near the entrance (or it may be something else, completely!). However, I did notice at least 3 car parks in the immediate neighborhood. What I also observed was that the parking charges were well below Tokyo standards :) Hope this helps. Have a great trip! -Ravi
