We decided to spend one night in a Ryokan to get the full experience of Kyoto. I am so glad we picked Kinoe. The staff was amazing. The man that works the front desk in the evenings is super nice, knowledgeable, and he genuinely wants to help. He also speaks English very clearly.

We arrived and they held our bags till check-in time. (Note: they don't lock your bags up like modern hotels do, but it's such a small quiet hotel, it didn't bother us.) He gave us a 5 minute introduction to Kyoto (paper map, highlighter, and pen w notes). He practically explains it step by step like a navigation device.

We selected the breakfast and dinner option, and you should too! Dinner was amazing and included a lot of food (drinks are extra). It's served in your room while you wear a japanese robe that the hotel provides. (I had to call the front desk guy to show us how to put it on.) A server brought us each course and explained each dish and the ingredients (also an English speaker, but some of the ingredients are very local so some Googling might be needed). We love to eat and learn.

I made the mistake of scheduling a 8:30am tour the next day. DO NOT do that, if you are doing breakfast with Kinoe. We rushed through what I thought was one of the most intricate and beautiful breakfasts I've ever had. Warning it's a lot of food. I would say plan for 1 hour to properly enjoy -- this is not an eggs and sausage kind of spread. It was delicious.

The hotel held our bags for the day because we didn't have time to transfer to our next hotel.

We came back from our full day tour, and our favorite front desk guy was there again. He learned about our travel plans to go to Tokyo after Kyoto and offered to get our bullet train tickets for us for a discount price through the hotel. He's so knowledgeable that he again walked us through step by step on how to get to the train, which platform, how long. He's truly a Kyoto travel expert!

I later found out that he went to purchase the tickets and delivered to our next Kyoto hotel. How nice is that? This is what I mean by genuinely wants to help and is kind.

I would highly recommend Kinoe to anyone that wants to experience a traditional ryokan.

The highlight of our visit was the traditional dinner on one of our nights, served to the six of us with all kinds of Japanese dishes. For us Americans, it was quite unusual, and the children enjoyed it as much as we did--perhaps more. We had the traditional breakfast the following morning, and service at all times was exemplary. Beds on the floor were quite comfortable, and we almost felt as if we were in a local home. Staff even helped with ticketing back to Narita, with clear written instructions on how we were to proceed on the trains. A very nice stay.

It is located near the bus stop, you can reach here within 20 minutes from Kyoto Station. It is 20 minute's walk to Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Kamo-gawa river, 10 minute's walk to Kohdaiji-temple. You can walk also around Gion.
This Ryokan has very traditional room. They explain about room and bring meals to the room. I had only breakfast, It was beautiful and delicious. The best thing I was happy that they brought us tee after we came here and come buck here. It makes us relaxed so much!
The public bathroom is small. I think It is a little bit uncomfortable, if here is crowded. But you can also use the private bathroom in your room.

Location is perfect. The staff were wonderful. We had a Japanese style room with breakfast. Breakfast was served in the room (in the Japanese way). They were very attentive. Breakfast was laid out beautifully, delicious meals, fantastic onsen. We believe they selectively chose the employees with good English to engage with us. Very helpful with suggesting where to go in Kyoto.

This was the best stay I've ever had in Japan. The tatami room was spacious and gorgeous, the staff were very friendly and accommodating, and we had the option of a private ofuro in our room or public bath. We did a kaiseki dinner, and breakfast the next morning- and both were incredible! The food was as much a work of art as it was delicious. It was wonderful to be served meals privately at the table in our room also.

They were also kind enough to hold our luggage until check in time, and offered to deliver it to our next hotel.

Thank you so much for such a fantastic stay!!! We will definitely come back the next time we're in Kyoto and have a longer stay.

For $400 US, I would expect better. The lobby is shabby and smells of cigarette smoke, the walls are all in need of a fresh coat of paint and our room had cigarette holes in the curtains and stains on the bamboo mats.

Although the staff serving dinner and breakfast were polite and lovely, the front desk help was subpar. They were understaffed and unable to give any recommendations for local restaurants or services.

The location is terrific and the beds were comfortable. Had it not been for these two conveniences, I would have taken the $400 hit and stayed somewhere else the next night. I definitely felt that western tourists were not whom they prefer to cater to. That's just fine. All in all, I suggest you look elsewhere.

I CANNOT emphasize how ideal the location of this ryokan is: right next to the castle walls of Kennin-ji, a vibey walk through Hanamikoji Alley through throngs of revelers to the Kamo River, a scenic hike's distance to Kiyomizudera and the ancient Ishibei-koji lane and ninen-zaka lane -- some of the most beautiful alleyways in the world. I felt so spoiled to have such magic at my doorstep.

The ryokan itself is also extremely quiet and charming, and great bang for the buck. Rooms were roomy and clean, and there didn't seem to be too many other guests there. Sure, it's not truly in ancient architecture like some other ryokans, but again, great bang for the buck and very quiet.

Once again: location, location, location.

Four story hotel in southern Higashiyama where the famous Yasaka Pagoda is clearly visible from the hotel. The hotel is located in a hook where the main entrance is not from the main road, a low walled building with a dry zen garden at the entrance to the front office. You will be provided with a sandal, and you have to remove your shoes while you were in the hotel. The lobby is designed not too rustic, viewing the zen garden. On the left corner, the hotel provided onsen, Japanese public bath, totally separate for man and woman. The onsen is modern design for your comfort, mixed with traditional wooden pail and a large hot pool. There is a manual on the wall how to do the Japanese public bath properly.
Hotel rooms are from 1st to 4th floor, the door is modern one with standard key. Inside, you are provided with another sandals for used in the room. The bath tub and the toilet is separate room. The hotel room has three separated rooms, first is for keeping the luggage, futons (Japanese mattress) and blanket, separated by rolling wooden door is the main bedroom and a small table. The floors are covered with tatami, a minimalist zen ikebana (flower arrangements) and a calligraphy painting at the center of a blank off-white wall is the only interior for the room. You will sleep on a futon. Another rolling wooden door separated the balcony where there are small tea table and two stools. A tea set for tea ceremony and electric thermos are provided.
There are no scenic view from any part of the hotel as the windows are fenced with iron bars, and the hotel is located on the main road.
You will be provided with Yukata, summer kimono, and you may wear it outside the hotel.

The hotel is located is southern higashiyama which is very close to Gion district and to many temples from Yasaka Jinja, Chion in, Maruyama park, Kiyomizu Dera, Sanjusangendo.

In front of the hotel are vending machines, bus stop is 2 minutes walk, and there are Lawson and Seven Eleven minimarkets within 5 minutes walk.

Free wifi without password and no limit inside the room.

Ordering kaiseki set menu must be in advance.

You can come early and ask the front desk to keep your luggage before check in time.

Drawbacks :
- This is a modern hotel with ryokan design, that will not bring us back to the past japan. Contrast with Gion district and Pontocho street.
- Strange check in hour at 15.00-17.00pm and check out at 10am
- Hotel is closed at 00.00pm
- Only younger staffs can speak English and they are not on duty all the time.
- No heater, if you stay in winter, you have to rely on blankets.
- Electric thermos buttons are only in Japanese, which is difficult to operate.
- No business center

We waited till the last minute to book our stay and paid a huge premium for it. Nevertheless, we were very happy with Kinoe and very pleased by the attentiveness of the staff and the proximity to temples which had mesmerizing fall leaf foliage around the grounds. My wife was pleasantly surprised that the staff had cleaned and brushed her Ugg boots. The staff also provided good advice in English! Kinoe is near the tradtional tea houses. We were able to catch a glimpse of the geisha in their full kimono splendor going to work.

The kaiseki dinners were superb particularly on our second night of our stay. We enjoyed the kaiseki dinner which was served in the privacy of our room. Though a bit pricey, this was one of the few splurges we have done in a long while and worth every yen of it.

Kinoe is the place to be for a delightful visit to Kyoto,
