【From Kansai Airport】 It takes about 110min by train and bus. 【From Kyoto station】 By bus: It takes 20 min. By taxi: It takes 15 min "Sakanoue": Kyoto-style cuisine and inn "ryokan" Please enjoy yourself with Kyoto style tradition and hospitality in the authentic historical area of Higashiyama which is the most popular area in Kyoto. “Sakanoue” is located in Gion, a vibrant yet quiet area where you can experience the historical part of Kyoto. When you look around inside our building, you will discover the exquisite beauty of the Japanese traditional architecture that comes with craftsmanship and passion. The furnishing we arrange in the rooms, the vases and hanging scrolls, everything is carefully selected for each room to establish a sophisticated Japanese atmosphere. The neighborhood we are located at is very quite. The sounds of cars and people are rarely heard from the rooms, even if the windows are open. We offer the silence that helps you to relax after a long day. We work hard to offer our guests an unforgettable experience at our Ryokan, which is one of the most distinctive features of the Japanese culture.

This was out first time staying in a Ryokan and we had a wonderful time. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful and couldn't do enough to help. The ryoken was spotlessly clean and the room was really comfortable. Having not slept in tatami mats before we didn't know what to expect, but it is very comfortable. We would go out in the day to explore Kyoto and in the evenings when we came back the room the room would be made up with beds again. The room came with a private bathroom which had a shower and a Japanese bath tub too. It really felt like enjoying part of Japanese culture, being a tourist and staying in hotels it can sometimes feel like you're not really experiencing Japanese culture but this felt like an authentic experience, I would definitely recommend a stay here. If we are lucky enough to visit Kyoto again we would definitely stay here again. It's in a great location for exploring temples and Gion District too. In the evenings the streets are so quiet so it's easy to get a good night's sleep.

We stayed 2 nights at Ryokan Sakanoue and booked dinner and breakfast. The staff were very accommodating and pleasant during our entire stay right from check in and even after check out.

The kaiseki meals were delicious, though sometimes served at a haphazard rate, we ate in a beautiful traditional dining room inside the hotel. We were also told that there is a new menu every day.

The breakfast like the dinner changed everyday we were there. Would definitely recommend the Japanese Breakfast over the western breakfast, just for a change of perspective.

Rooms were clean and an epitome of a traditional Japanese room. There was an amazingly fragrant wood bathtub. Not to mention the fantastic water pressure system and clean bathroom.

In terms of location, the hotel is very convenient and close to attractions and the Gion area. There is also a nice little sweet shop down the road. Would highly recommend if you were looking for a Ryokan experience while in Kyoto.

One thing I noticed about Japan was the amount of respect and service given to patrons is so excellent, especially compared to America. And yet, this place was on another level. The staff were all extremely friendly and helpful, and my fiance and I felt like royalty when we stayed here. The rooms were very traditional and we noticed our hosts also respected a lot of old customs which was really cool to see. The rooms were comfortable and the private bath was a neat experience.

My only warning would be if you have an issue with really firm beds or hard floors, since the bedding here is a traditional futon it might be uncomfortable for some people. For me though, it was rather nice, and I slept rather soundly.

We stayed 1 night at this location and the experience was fantastic. The service was exceptional and the food provided as part of the Kyoto dining experience was fantastic. The location is ideal for exploring the traditional part of Kyoto as well, with transport options for exploring further afield, as well as shrines and sights to explore nearby. Highly recommended.

Pros:
Excellent service and truly unforgettable meals. The location is perfect for exploring nearby parks, temples, and shops by foot. Our room (8 mats) was beautifully decorated and spacious. The staff does a good job accommodating English-speaking guests.

Cons:
As some have pointed out, the facilities are indeed old, smoky, and a bit dingy. My wife found the family bath too grimy to use, which was disappointing.

Overall:
A lovely experience and a good value for the price.

Pro Tip:
Request a room with a garden view in the “special requests” form online.

This was our first trip to Japan and we wanted to experience Japanese hospitality.

We couldn't have chosen a better place than Sakanoue. From the moment we were greeted and brought to our room the hospitality was top notch. Very personalized services.

The accommodation was very clean and spacious. It was in fact very large. We got to experience what it was like to live in a traditional Japanese accomodation.

Our Kaiseki dinner and breakfast was also top notch. We were served with a 12 course dinnner made up of seasonal specialties and we thoroughly enjoyed the food.

We would highly recommend the experience of staying at Sakanoue to experience traditional Kyoto ryokan at its best.

I stayed one night in early March 2020 with my wife and we loved our entire stay at the Sakanoue. Before arriving, I had reached out to confirm that my dietary restrictions (seafood/fish) could be accommodated for both breakfast and dinner--both meals were accommodated and I still had the true ryokan experience.

The property is located in the heart of Gion, so many sights are within walking distance. The staff were beyond friendly and did everything they could to make sure that my wife and I were having a great stay.

Absolutely would recommend!

The environment of "Kyoto Ryokan SAKANOUE" and the staffs' service are perfect. But unfortunately, you will be required to return to the inn before 0000hrs. Also, hot water will be out of service after 0100hrs. You will have to sacrifices some of your freedom to enjoy the most traditional Japanese inn experience.

I really didn't know what to expect when booking a Ryokan and cannot speak highly enough about the staff at Sakanoue! When we arrived, the staff was kind and welcoming, explaining everything we needed to know. They asked what time we would like to sit down for dinner and brought us some green tea and a sweet to our room while we settled in. The kaiseki dinner and Japanese breakfast were both phenomenal. The rooms were well sized and the traditional style beds were more comfortable than I'd expected. I absolutely recommend Sakanoue for anyone looking for a great Ryokan experience in Kyoto.

Their service was superb. My friend lost something on the way to the ryokan, and they spent their extra efforts to make calls around affiliated institutions. Also, they genuinely served us to make us feel home in every single possible way.

The facilities were nice and cozy too. It is nearby Kiyomizu-tera and Gion street, so it was easy to travel around Kyoto. However, it was very quiet, so we were able to take a great break as well.

Hi, I am not sure. It’s a very small and traditional Japanese environment, which is very quiet. I did not see any children there, during our stay.

There were a few sittings. 7, 7.30, 8, 8.30 as they have the food laid out at booking time. Choice of Japanese or western style. Both substantial and delicious
