Me and a friend needed to stay in Kyoto for a night and for a 3-4 minute walk away from Kyoto station this location couldn't be beat for the price we stayed at. Multiple shared restrooms, very clean, good facilities. Would definitely stay here again, not sure about the bad reviews here. Thank you!

I'm not sure if the hotel manager was just shy, bored of his life and job or just never learnt how to smile, but this is the wrong job for him. It might sound a little harsh but he made the stay horrible. The 11pm curfew locked doors was a shock since its central Kyoto and it has a nightlife,... More

the ryokan is very nice but the guest is really strict with the rules: doors and showers are closed at 23, so before 23, having the shower is mandatory... it can impact with your vacation plans. The ryocan is really typical and clean. good location no breakfast

Located amazingly close to Kyoto Railway stations with many bus routes and shops nearby. But for this price you have to be prepared to: 1) sleep on "futon" - Japanese matresses laying on the mat. By the morning I had aches in my spine and neck 2) linen is outdated. futons are raped in some places 3) pillow is also... More

We enjoyed our stay here since we looked for a traditional japanese accommodation experience. The staff was very friendly and polite. On the negative, there is a curfew between 11:00pm and 06:00, but we did not mind since we usually were back by those times. Also, there is poor sound proof, and could hear everything that happened on the street.... More

Room was wide and the bed was comfortable. Staff was very helpful and polite. Walls were thin, and it sounds as if you could not close the window completly and you could hear all the street noise but it was not so loud to keep you awake though.Wifi was very good. Never had a problem. Location was very good. very... More

We appreciate the good location next to main train station. Rooms were clean. There were 5 extra futons on a wardrobe but 3 of them we didn't dare to use because of large humidity stains on them. Walls are thin and you can hear neighbour's conversations. Shower can be shocking if you mind being nacked in front of others. The... More

Location was superb. Lodging itself, was clean and functional. I booked the room with attached bath and toilet, so, privacy was not an issue. Air conditioning worked fine. The problem with this establishment is the unfriendly, unsmiling, joy-sapping personas of the staff. I did not feel welcome at all and was relieved at check out time to be leaving the... More

It is my first time staying in a Japanese style bedroom. I must say, it is comfortable even though we were sleeping on the floor. There is a shared Japanese bathroom where all women take shower together. There is even a bathtub where i understand contains hot spring water. This is truly a Japanese style for one if one is... Nihonkan is very strict with its rules and regulations. This did not serve well for me as I had a Skype meeting and wanted a decent space (or even a corner to do it). The curfew aside, you cannot even be at the lobby area after 11pm. I am highly appalled by the gesture of the woman shutting the lights... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
