We stayed there for 4 nights. I wasn't quite sure about this type of accommodation at first but we couldn't find anything else. So we didn't have any expectation going there. Our host, Divyam, made sure that our taxi driver knew how to get to his place and he stood at the stop near his house to pick us up.... More

We stayed here for 3 nights in winter in Kyoto. It was a very pleasant stay. Divyam has plenty of tips on what to do and what to see - he always asks you what you want to do and gives his recommendations. The house is pretty cool, it's an old Samurai house and was wonderful staying in it. The... More

Straight off the airplane, and Shinkansen to Kyoto then made it to the phone box Divyam told us to call from. Made the call, "I'll be with you in 30 seconds". Less than 30 seconds later we were saying hello to Divyam for the first time. In advance we were booked in the upstairs room, however we had the downstairs... More

We stayed with the family at Divyam and Yasuko the first week of May 2014. There are tow rooms, both of them are very quiet. Some of the guests complain about privacy: these houses are not the typical US place with sound proof walls! It can be cold and warm in Kyoto: staying in a place like Yonbanchi will give... More

I stayed in yonbanchi for 5 nights in total in the winter season. Divyam and yasuko were very welcoming hosts and nothing was too much trouble, yasuko even drove me to the super market and around the local streets on my first day there so I could get my bearings of the place. The location is very beautiful and a... More

The owner needs to add space heaters in the winter. Only the bed was heated at night. You could come back at night and get in bed; it was too cold for anything else. The owner wanted to plan out our trip for us. We had already done extensive research, but he would not accept that we wanted to do... More

I was dissapointed by the lack of privacy at Yonbanchi and all the reviews I'd read were so good. The location is good but the downstairs room opens at the ceiling level and with the owners living in the next room, you cannot have a private conversation. The room doesn't have a kettle nor hot water and it is clear... More

The house of the Samurai puts one in the spirit of visiting nearby Shinnyo-do temple and the many other sites of sacred grounds in Kyoto; owners Divyam and Yosuka are the ultimate guides to a remarkable experience in Kyoto. When I left Yonbanchi after a ten-day stay, it felt as though I was leaving home.

The ryokan stands in a quiet alley located between 2 temples. The house has a traditional taste with authentic minimalist rooms. The ground floor round has a good space, and has a view on a small and cute garden; The bedding is very confortable, I'll let you find out why. Our host Divyam was more than welcoming: we were taken... More

In addition to its excellent location the guesthouse is a beautiful, traditional Japanese dwelling. The owners went above and beyond in both hospitality and advice for sight seeing. Follow their advice and you will be sure to have a memorable trip. Staying in this type of lodging sets the tone for the sights that you will visit in the city.... More

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
