After hearing my good friend (a sucker for value-for-money) raved about Toyoko Inn, I am finally staying in a Toyoko Inn. She has even convinced me to sign up for their International Membership card at JPY1,500....which I did. I did not realised that I arrived at this hotel on a Public Holiday. By being a member, I was entitled to a 30% discount, and this brings my hotel bill to below JPY5,500 for two persons. That is a REAL deal. This means my membership is now free!

No wonder my brother raves about Toyoko Inn. The best type of advertisement is by word-of-mouth. So what do I think?

Think, McDonald's. Every city/country you go, the look/feel, brand, layout is identical. So whichever city you stay, if you stay at a Toyoko Inn, you haven't got a clue which city you are in. It is characterless, functional, but it is EXCELLENT value for money for those who need a clean roof over the head, internet and good location (most are within walking distance from subway/train station). It is suited for both the business/leisure traveller who is either out working or out playing most of the time.

On the POSITIVE side, this hotel is functional. Truly, it has everything you can bargain for. Everything you ever need as a traveller is there. It WORKS and it is CLEAN: Hairdryer, Fridge, Slippers, Pyjamas, Toiletries, TV, Bible (yes, you don't have to lug your bible around for your daily devotion)......go check out the full list on Toyoko Inn's website.

What else I possibly review for this hotel to help independent international travellers?

LOCATION
I booked this hotel last minute as all the other Toyoko Inns in Kyoto are fully booked. I would have preferred staying at along Shijio-Dori where it is the main drag (shopping street) and easy access to Gion. The website says exit 2 of Gojo station, but it doesn't say which direction after exit 2. Turn RIGHT and look for McDonald's across the road. Do not cross. Turn left and walk ahead. It was dark when we arrived, so it took a while for us to find. Gojo station is just one station from Kyoto station, but a 15 mins walk with luggage may seem forever....

PREPARATION
--Sightseeing
Toyoko Inn is largely catered to domestic travellers. Do not expect a high level of spoken English. So if you are travelling independently, please prepare your homework in advance or enquire at the Kyoto Tourist Information at Kyoto train station. Always equip yourself with a Kyoto City Map and a Kyoto Bus Map., Both are free. It is good to move by bus instead of subway because you get to see Kyoto City instead of being underground.

--If you have JR pass
Your JR pass is valid for JR buses operating within Kyoto City. It goes to the Kinkakuji/Uzumasa Area. You can even use it use the local rail (JR Nara line) to go to Fushimi-Inari Shrine. 2nd stop at Inari.
We were a little annoyed because we bought the Kyoto Bus Day Pass.....only to find out later in the day, that the JR pass would have served us well.

--Breakfast
Toyoko Inn serves basic Japanese breakfast comprising of toast (only jam, no butter), ongiri, miso soup, pickles, white porridge, coffee. This is not the westerner's idea of breakfast. But for Asians, this type of breakfast is more than adequate. If you are fastidious about your breakfast, take a short walk to MacDonalds across the road.

--Television
Mostly Japanese channels. Bring your own laptop to watch your own movies/dvd. I do that whenever travelling in Japan.

CONCLUSION
There is no need to post any pictures for Toyoko Inn because they are all the same. It is like take pictures of Big Mac in every city/country you visit. I would stay in Toyoko Inn if it is just an overnight stay (check-in late, check-in early) and I want the convenience. The rooms are small...you would not want to hibernate in your hotel room!

I have stayed at this Toyoko inn location several times already. The price performance of this chain has always exceeded my expectation.
The hotel is within a 5 minute walk to the gojo karasuma subway station and about a 5 minute walk to Shijo karasuma ( a big intersection with shops, restaurants and subway interchange). There is a family mart convenience store right next to the hotel. I have also walked to Kyoto station. It took about 15 minutes one way. Very convenient location.
I have reserved a twin non-smoking room for my husband and myself. Everything in the room worked. We stored our 26-inch luggage under the beds and that cleared the walkway to the bathroom.
Breakfast is served every day from 7 am to 9:30 am. It varied a little bit everyday but always included rice, miso soup, coffee, tea and bread. When I visited, they also served curry pasta, tofu/veggie in soy sauce for breakfast. Nothing elaborate but it served my purpose for rehydration in the morning.

I have joined the Toyoko inn club. It offers advance reservation ( 6 months ahead) and discounts on certain days( Sunday's and holidays). Worth looking into if you are considering repeated visits.

As far as transportation to and from the hotel is concerned, I have reserved MK sky gate shuttle online 48 hours before arrival at kansai airport. The shuttle provided kansai airport to and from the hotel. Otherwise, catching a taxi from the station after getting off Haruka is simple and convenient.

Will stay again.

So stayed at yet another Toyoko Inn. Stayed here in June '06. Most of the Toyoko Inns are similar. These are like the Best Westerns back in the US. They're nice business budget hotels with good amenities. All the Toyokos have a dining room/area close to the lobby. On the ground floor there's usually a small laundry room with pay washer and dryer. There are also vending machines with water, coffee, snacks, and soft drinks. Word for those who may not be aware, breakfast is Japanese style, which means tea, miso soup, and choice of a few types of onigiri.

Each Toyoko room I stayed at was a single room with a clean comfy bed. Room also came with a desk, fridge, small closet, and small all-in-one bathroom. For the uninitiated, the bathroom is quite a technological innovation. The bathroom is a step up from the rest of the room. The tub is large and deep Japanese style tub. The toilet seat has a bunch of buttons to control the warmth of the seat, activate the bidet function, and do some other things that I don't remember. Toiletries are great and are all in one convenient location, no more little bottles.

For the price, the value you get from a Toyoko is outstanding.

Since all Toyokos are fairly similar, this review will be more about the city in which it was located.

This hotel is a bit away from the main Kyoto JR station. If you can, take the subway and get off at the Gojo station. It leaves you close to the hotel. This makes this hotel a good spot as there are also buses that go up and down the main street and take you to various sights. The train also takes you to plenty of sights. There are so many to see in Kyoto so this hotel makes it a great base camp to get around. Kyoto is worth staying and exploring for at least 3 days at a brisk pace or 5 days at a relaxed pace. Summers are warm, but wonderful to experience any time of year.

This budget hotel had been booked by our tour company and as we travelled around Japan for just over two weeks, we stayed in Toyoko Inns in Matsumoto, Hiroshima, Kyoto and Yokohama (but they're everywhere) and found them convenient, clean, friendly places to stay.
The hotel is located on a direct route from the Shin-Kyoto railway station, aa short five-minute ride by taxi.
Let's be honest - you're in a big city so getting a hotel close to everything you want to see is going to be difficult; BUT even though the hotel is not close to most of the sights in Kyoto, everywhere is just a taxi ride away - ten minutes to the castle, ten minutes to the geisha area and main market and about 10-15 minutes from the Kiyomuzi Dera temple area. There's also a subway station not far away.
Reception is simliar to most Toyoko Inns - plain and has a few tables and chairs where breakfast is served in the morning. Staff were friendly and helpfully spoke English. Check in time of 3.00pm is strictly enforced so you won't get into your room until then.
Rooms are clean and well maintained and have 'module' bathrooms with deep baths, shower and 'electronic' toilets with bidet-type spray washes. Breakfast is Japanese style with rice triangles, miso soup, seaweed and pickled vegetables, rice, noodles and to drink green tea and coffee.
The hotel has free wi-fi in the reception area, where there are also drinks machines (water, beer, cans of coffee, juices etc.).
Don't expect fancy and all the extras of a luxury hotel but you won't beat the value for what you get.

You don't get much better than the chain of Toyoko Inns. They are always clean, decent, have internet access, include breakfast, and are always in the center of downtown or right next to the train stations. This one in particular is within walking distance of everything in central Kyoto. They even give you gifts upon arrival! (a little alarm clock and some socks!) The breakfast is a simple Japanese breakfast, with miso soup, rice, tea etc. And it's about £40 per night. Bargain! The rooms are small-ish, but not claustrophobic - and if you get a higher floor, you get a nice view. They speak basic English at the desk, and everything is spotlessly clean. What more could you want?? If you are travelling in Japan for a few weeks, I suggest saving your money for a few luxurious Ryokans out in the mountains, and staying in a cheap Toyoko while in the cities. They are everywhere!!!

Have a look at other Toyoko Inn reviews and you'll know what to expect. Again, there's no Dining Room - breakfast is taken in a space off the Front Lobby which is inadequate for the numbers of guests coming down for it. We didn't bother to fight for a seat and preferrred a nearby Cafe / Bakery. Room 508 had a fire escape running across the window and a wall beyond, so there was no view. It was small, with the bed pushed up against the window and adequate only for an active small person used to crawling across beds! Storage space is minimal so you're in trouble if you have large luggage. But the hotel is comfortable enough - particularly if, like me, you like a good firm bed. The drawback here are the logistics of getting to the place. It's beyond comfortable walking distance from Kyoto station. The nearer (5 minutes) Gojo Subway has 6 exits and isn't user friendly when you're lugging cases.

It is true that having just one elevator becomes a problem during the morning rush hours especially if your room is on the lower non-smoking floors. We were booked in a non-smoking room but luckily were given the top, 13th, floor room so the lift was not an issue for us. However, if you are sensitive to smoke like us, be warned that the smoking floors are from around the 7th to 12th floors, so we were literally sitting atop a smoke "stack" and sometimes did smell smoke seeping into our room : ( Location is ok but not as good as that for the TI at Shijo Karasuma. For the latter and also this hotel, the most convenient way to get to/from Osaka is to use the Hankyu line between Hankyu Karasuma and Hankyu Umeda stations.

Unfortunately, I could not get a weekend reservation because this hotel is very popular. So I had to break up my trip. If you are a Toyoko Inn member, you can reserve up to 6 months ahead, 3 months ahead if you're not. See their website. This staff speaks English well, was nice to tell me that I had enough points to earn a free night, explained that I didn't have to renew my Toyoko membership because once you join it's forever. The breakfast room was full, but if you wait a minute, someone leaves. Breakfast consisted of sausages and various rice and pickle dishes. No eggs. I did my laundry one afternoon in the hotel, no problems. The only disappointment I had was that the taxi driver took me to the wrong Toyoko Inn when I first arrived. Even after I showed him a map. My Kyoto friend told me that many taxi drivers are now retired military who do not know the area. If you're not tired, and not intimidated by the ant hill that is Kyoto station, ask around for the subway line and take the Karasuma subway one stop to Gojo. I believe you get out at exit 2. MacDonald's is on your right, (across the street), and you are at Lawsons. The big street in between is Karasuma. Walk about 10 mins and the hotel is on the left. Look for the white sign (like a banner) with blue Japanese lettering and the dining area in the front. If you hit Circle K, you've passed it. If you hit Shijo station, you've really passed it. If you get lost, just remember you are on Karasuma street between Gojo and Shijo stations.

I stayed here 3 days from 17-19th of April. I really enjoyed the stay for the price I paid. The price includes the japanese style breakfast. The hotel is little far from the JR Kyoto station a bus or taxi ride to the hotel is needed. It is close by the Gojo Subway. The bus stop near this hotel Gojo-Karasuma a 600-700Meter walk will onnect you to the entire Kyoto city. A one day pass for 500 yen will let you cover the Kyoto city and most attractions in and around the places.

--Sightseeing
So if you are travelling independently, please prepare your homework in advance or enquire at the Kyoto Tourist Information at Kyoto train station. Always equip yourself with a Kyoto City Map and a Kyoto Bus Map available free at the staion or at the hotel. It is good to move by bus instead of subway because you get to see Kyoto City instead of being underground.

--Breakfast
Toyoko Inn serves Japanese breakfast comprising of toast, ongiri, miso soup, pickles, white porridge, coffee.

--Television
Mostly Japanese channels. Bring your own laptop to watch your own movies/dvd.

The Family mart is just next to the hotel and there is a McDonalds just 50 Meters away.
Toyoko Inn has clean room, clean sheets, hot water, a kettle, a safe, and in room internet access wifi and pay and use laundry. The rooms are small just like any other Japanese hotel but comfortable. I recommend for this hotel for a budget stay.

Ask for a non-smoking room if you are a non-smoker. The smoking room is intolerable if you are a non-smoker.

I will definitely recommend this place for all. Had a pleasant stay.

Toyoko Inn offers great value rooms with free internet in the lobby and free breakfast. Rooms are clean and large enough (Japanese standard) for this price. This Kyoto branch, however, is not exactly close to the train station (although close to the bus stop, a couple of stops from the main station).
