We stayed in early July at the Junei Hotel Kyoto Imperial Palace West for two nights in a Deluxe Twin Room. We found the hotel to be in a good location for our literary, as we used taxis or the bus stop several minutes’ walk away on the main road. The bus stop is located at a strip of restaurants, convenience store and laundromat. This is a small boutique two story hotel just inside an alleyway type street. The exterior entrance and lobby are inviting with the traditional wooden structure and lattice, lit with warm lantern lighting, especially when returning from an excursion. The staff were always very friendly, helpful and welcoming.

We found the room to be very spacious, and the décor aesthetically pleasing. The raised tatami mat area with low table, is not only functional for eating and sleeping (there are two beds and I used the roll out mattress from the cupboard on the mats) but this area fused traditional with modern.

There is a separate toilet located inside the door. The bathroom contains a shower and a large free standing bath adjacent to a balcony window containing a small bonsai type garden. This was a relaxing place to soak and unwind as the heated recirculating water burbled back into the bath, and light filtered in through the window and garden. The speakers in the bathroom complemented the scene with soothing tranquil music and nature sounds. In fact it was so good, we played this often via the room speakers too. A separate basin area outside the bathroom provides access to the balcony. It’s small, but I enjoyed standing out there when eating my BYO breakfast.

We stayed at bigger brand hotels in the other cities, but we enjoyed the Junei Hotel Kyoto Imperial Palace West the most, and we plan to stay here again on our next visit to Japan.

Tip:
Make sure if giving a taxi driver the hotel name that you state “The Junei Hotel Kyoto Imperial Palace West’ as there is another hotel similarly named “The Junei Hotel Kyoto”, but further out.

Dear Mr. Sydney_Robster, Thank you very much for you kind and detailed review. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us and found our staff to be helpful and welcoming. One of our goal is to bring to our guests a mix between traditional Japanese hospitality and the convenience of a modern hotel. While we are constantly striving to improve, your review makes us think that we are going in the right direction. We are specially happy to hear that you like the tatami space. As you well perceived, its high functionality has been one of the defining traits of traditional Japanese home designs for generations, allowing people to dine, sleep and spend their free time comfortably in the same room. It is a one of a kind, very Japanese experience, and it we are sincerely happy to see guests enjoying it. Similarly, our bathtubs are made of Shigaraki ceramic, made in the town of the same name which is known as one of the oldest kilns in Japan. Not only they are aesthetically pleasant, but also keep the heat and help warm the body to the core, providing a relaxing effect that is amplified by the hydrogen bath. As they are order made by artisans and only availble in a few places in Japan, by using them we hope more people from outside the country get the opportunity to hear about Japanese ceramics. Lastly we would like to thank you again for your visit. The staff hopes to have the pleasure of your visit again in the future. Meanwhile we wish that you have safe travels and make many new found memories wherever you go. Kindest regards, The staff of THE JUNEI HOTEL Kyoto Imperial Palace West

We had the best stay. Very comfortable and clean. We especially enjoyed the free coffee and hot tea amenities. The bronze hot tub with hydrogen bath was amazing. Hotel staff is so nice and patient with us. The train station was a little far but easily walkable. The bus route stopped very close across the Main Street. We would stay here again.

Dear Ms. Melissa C, Thank you very much for your kind words. We are happy to hear that the hotel was up to your standards and that you were able to enjoy the Kyoto coffee, premium tea and also the Shigaraki pottery bathtub with hydrogen bath. Differently from other major cities in Japan, Kyoto has a rather simple rail map, which sometimes can be inconvenient for those trying to dislocate only by train, hence why we always recommend the city bus for those looking for convenient means of transportation here. We are happy to hear that you soon were able to use it to its fullest. We are looking forward to your visit again in the future. Kindest regards, The staff of THE JUNEI HOTEL Kyoto Imperial Palace West

Love this hotel. Have it 4 out of 5 stars as the rooms do show slight wear and the location means lots of taxis. But the service is above average as the staff gets five stars. Also, the rooms really grow on you and the bathtubs are amazing after a long day walking. Stayed with friends and tall husband expressed great appreciation for the shower (amazing water pressure and height for a tall guy).

Got the traditional Japanese breakfast which was hearty and varied enough that the picky eaters had enough to eat. Was a good option as the rooms were large enough for all of us to sit around on the tatami mats of raised platform and enjoy. We were on the first floor and will warn that romping children on above floor platforms could be heard but luckily only around dinner time. Rooms were quiet and comfortable at night. They were a bit cave-like as the street side window meant we kept the shades down. But putting on music and lounging in the giant tub with continual heat and waterfall meant minor complaints were forgotten.

Small complaints: distance to things. Light in bathroom turns on automatically and because of glass between bathroom and bedroom may mean light waking person in bedroom in middle of night. Would suggest hotel design a night light option for bathroom (ability to dim?)

Prose: Excellent staff. Room sizes and of course the amazing zen bathtubs.

Dear Ms. Michele L, Thank you very much for providing us with your precious and detailed feedback. It was our pleasure to receive you and your cherished ones, as are happy to hear that our staff was up to your standards and that you were able to enjoy your rooms and the Shigaraki ceramic bathtubs, among others. Regarding the hotel location, as well noted in your review, aiming to provide a quiet environment to our guests we opted for a residential area next to the traditional Nishijin area, outside the busy city center. For said reason, taxis are indeed the most convenient form of transportation. However, differently from other major cities in Japan, Kyoto city bus tend to be more convenient than the city railway system, and very accessible from the hotel (about 3 min walk to the closest bus stop). We hope the taxis did not provide a detrimental experience. As for the room bathroom lights and the slight wear of the rooms, we will take your precious opinion in account when remodeling in the near future. We would also like to apologize for any inconvenience that might have been caused. We hope to have the opportunity of receiving you again in the future. Meanwhile, we wish safe travels and many good new memories in your future travels. Kindest regards, THE JUNEI HOTEL Kyoto Imperial Palace West

The staffs are extremely friendly and helpful providing us the map of amenities nearby and even gave us a detailed explanation of how to use the different functions and details of our room.

I noticed the hotel has no lifts, so going up and down might be a challenge for disabled person. You might want to notify the hotel in advance for a room on the ground floor.

Room is really huge for two person. Large sitting area, a huge bathroom and just lots of space. The room comes soft music and a separate music for the bath. Totally zen feeling.

The only downside is the location - the nearest train station is a 15mins walk away but at the same time I love the quiet neighborhood away from all the tourist and crowd. I would recommend taking a bus to visit all the popular attractions since Kyoto is not as well connected via the train compared to Osaka or Tokyo. The bus stop is a short 3-4mins walk away. Bus 12 brings you to the downtown Shijo area (20mins ride).

The nearest FamilyMart/convenience store is 4mins walk if you wanted to grab snacks or drinks.

We loved our time at the Junei Hotel Kyoto West Imperial Palace. The whole staff were very welcoming, friendly and helpful. We loved the amenities like daily pajamas and slippers for our whole family and treats such as crackers, Japanese sweets and daily quality coffe and tea. Also, the spa like hydrogen bath with shower, all situated in a zen like outdoor setting was the best I’ve experienced. We definitely will come back to the Junei for our next trip to Kyoto. Thank you everyone at Junei Hotel!

Attentive friendly service. A decent size room with a really lovely bed. The excellent Japanese breakfast was served in our room, sitting on a tatami mat (as in a ryokan). The bathroom has a copper bath with room for two - a little like an onsen. The only reason that I have given 4 and not 5 stars was the location. The Imperial Palace and Nijo Castle are within 15 minutes walk, but the everything requires use of the good public transport system (eg Gion is 45-60 minutes walk) or a taxi.

Wonderful hotel! We loved the location—in a quiet neighborhood away from the hustle and bustle of the touristy areas. We could walk to restaurants, Nijo Castle, and the Imperial Palace Gardens, which were lovely! The bed was comfortable, the bathtub was divine, and we very much enjoyed the tatami mat dining area, which was a traditional low table with cushions. (But there was also a desk with a chair for any work that needed to be done.) No elevator, but that was no problem for us. The staff spoke excellent English and were very helpful in making suggestions and helping with dinner reservations. I’d definitely stay there again!

This small boutique hotel is located in quite area of Kyoto, close to the imperial palace.
The staff made our stay very pleasant and were always ready to accommodate any request or questions we had.
The rooms where large even by western standards, more than 40 m2 and the bathroom with the tub was wondwrful
I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone that goes to Kyoto.

Really cute “boutique” hotel with a serious Japanese vibe. We strive to provide a good balance between traditional Japanese room layout with some of the comforts of a western style room. We also understand that one of our roles is to introduce to our guests some of our favorite aspects of Kyoto life, thus why our tea is produced locally and breakfast prepared by traditional Japanese restaurants nearby.
