We stayed here for 5 nights while in Kyoto and had a great experience. The rooms are small, yes, but you're not here to spend a majority of your time in the room. We loved the feel of the lobby and having the bar open late was a plus! The hotel is located right off the main drag and a 5 minute walk from the subway station and 2 stops from the JR line making it easy to get around everywhere. My wife used the public bath every day after a long day of walking around the city and loved having access to it before heading out for the night. The breakfast buffet in the morning was great to hit before exploring for the day.

Tip- Ask the front desk to purchase a day bus pass if you need it. They have them for sale and it beats going to the JR station to grab one if you didn't when you arrived. The buses are easy to grab and will take you places some of the trains won't get you. 600 Yen for the day and it's a lot easier then feeding the bus every time you hop on even if you are just using it for the day.

I was a bit anxious to stay at this hotel, as I had just stayed at their sister hotel, the Granbell Shibuya in Tokyo, which I was not overly fond of due to their hard beds and cramped rooms. But there was no need to worry as my stay at the Granbell Kyoto was fantastic.

An American couple checked into the room next to mine and were shocked at how tiny it was. Apparently they hadn’t been to Tokyo yet, and I explained to them that this room was like a suite compared to the one I had stayed in there.

Now, the room isn’t huge, but it’s totally fine. It’s quite narrow. To the left was dresser with a sink, electric water boiler and toiletries. To the right was the bathroom. Next was a small seating area with a little two seater sofa and table and a generous flatscreen TV with Apple TV. I had hoped to be able to stream from my iphone, but for some reason their Apple TV wasn’t connected to the same network as my phone, so that wasn’t possible. Finally is the huge bed which takes up the entire width of the room at the far end. It was quite comfortable, much more so than the one I had tried to sleep on in Tokyo.

In the basement floor there is a public bath, which was lovely. Very relaxing. There was information that you can’t use the bath if you have tattoos, but there was no one there to check, and it was mostly empty when I used it. If I could make one small suggestion it would be to also have a small cold pool. I had been to the Saito Yu Sento (tattoo friendly) in Tokyo a few days earlier, and it was delightful to soak in a cold pool after walking around in the sun all day.

There is also a small laundry room in the basement with one or two washer dryers. However, the room has zero ventilation, so prepare for your clothes taking longer than usual to dry.

The location is great, right in the old city and within walking distance of the river and what seems to be the main drag. Communications via bus or train to places like Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, Nara and Kiyomizu-dera was easy, and with stops close to the hotel.

The breakfast was good, with a wide selection of both Eastern and Western style breakfast.

Lastly, I have to mention the staff which was wonderful. A big thank you to Shiori, Arisa, Jessica, Yuto, Shoko and everyone else whose names now escape me for making this a great stay. If I ever come back to Kyoto, I would gladly stay here again.

So happy we stayed here. Great location, just one block from the Main Street of Gion, easy to get to and from with access to trains, buses, bars and food just metres or minutes away. So much to love in this hotel. The staff are very kind and happy and helpful. The place is spotlessly clean and well maintained. It feels comfortable, secure and safe, especially with the additional pass required for the women’s onsen. The onsen is divine. Big, quiet, clean and nicely fitted out, with the right lighting for soaking and relaxing. We both used the onsens (one for men, one for women) and this was one of the reasons we chose to stay at the Granbell, as very few Japanese hotels have onsens.

Our room was lovely. Clean, lots of natural light, small fridge, safe, a good bathroom with a deep soaker bath (which we only used once as we did all our cleaning and soaking in the onsens), hanging space for clothes and a very comfortable bed. Add in Apple TV where we were able to log into our Netflix account as well as catching up with English language news and it was almost perfect. My one criticism is that there is no drawer or even a basket for putting clothes that don’t hang. Under bed storage or a small box for day-to-day items would be helpful. It’s a small thing and wouldn’t stop me from staying again. The room size was good. We had a double room and with two large suitcases and two carry-ons there was still plenty of room to get around without feeling cramped.

The hotel loaned us umbrellas for the one very rainy day and were so helpful when it came to directions and local knowledge. We will definitely stay again

The property is tastefully designed and sits in the heart of old Kyoto, so it's an attractive option for first time visitors to Kyoto. First impressions were very positive - the entry and lobby is striking, modern and warm. However, the room (largest in the property) was smaller than we found to be workable for 3 nights with bags. The bathroom was equally small. We're accustomed to small rooms in HK, NY, Tokyo, but this was probably beyond expectations.

The on-site hot spa is lovely. The breakfast is pretty great too.

Just finished 4 nights here. Good points - very handy location, nice onsen, super beds, quiet, bikes, staff are friendly. Bad points - very small rooms, but you adjust. Very bad breakfast which you can’t adjust. Please granbell people go out and buy a decent coffee machine and source some edible bread. Would be really easy to get 5 stars. Kyoto is an excellent town too.

This was our first time in Kyoto and the Kyoto Granbell is in the perfect position to explore the city. The hotel is very modern and chic, and the onsen was impeccably kitted out and was a very ambient and chilled out place to relax after a day of exploring! The room was indeed very small, and we had quite large suitcases, but we made it work, and the room was always clean and well put together.
We went to see the Maiko show at the hotel on our first night which was a fascinating art form and it was wonderful to learn more about Maiko and Geisha culture.
The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, and when I left something at the hotel they shipped it all the way to Tokyo for me, going above and beyond! I would not hesitate to recommend the Granbell and look forward to hopefully returning in the future.

This has been one of our favorite stays in Japan. Firstly, the hotel is located in the heart of an old town, in a walking distance to the city’s iconic traditional buildings and pagodas (pic added).

Secondly, the hotel itself is very modern and made with great attention to details. Shoe cleaner, JBL bluetooth speaker in the room, Shiseido toiletry... that small details really matter. And they have really big beds - the largest we’ve seen in Japan so far :)

Thirdly, their Onsen is a must-do experience. It is very neat, new and beautifully lighted in the evenings.

Breakfast offers quite a wide selection - great both for veggies and meat eaters.

Would stay here again!

Great value for money. Clean and new hotel. Beautiful design!! This hotel is in a beautiful old area of Kyoto. It is nice going for a walk at night in this area. The restaurants in this area are expensive, however if you walk 10 minutes, you will find millions of restaurants for all budgets. The rooms are small, but the bed is HUGE! We had a king room. The onsen was very nice after a day of walking. The breakfast was ok. We stayed 4 nights. If you stay for 2 or 3 nights, the breakfast is fine. The 4th day, you might be sick of it. It’s the same buffet everyday, but the price was great for what you get.

Spent four nights at this cute hotel in Gion. We arrived late to our hotel the night we got into Kyoto and the staff was very understanding and accommodating. English-speaking staff made check in and other tasks easy. Room is somewhat small which made it difficult to have our large luggage in the room, but we made it work. New clean towels every night delivered to the room. We were able to do some laundry as well as the hotel has coin laundry on site. Lots of free amenities for you if you forget or need something. One of our group members lost their bag on a train on the first night and the staff was so helpful to contact the train company to help us track down the bag. Additionally, the hotel provides luggage shipping which was super convenient for us as we were traveling to Tokyo next. Overall, a great hotel with value-added services at a great nightly rate!

Small ? I can cope with that…. but this is not a functional hotel. Don’t bring a bag there’s no room for it. Have to climb over huge bed to turn lights off and on. Kettle, cups not tea bags no coffee satchels just hot water. This is absolutely nuts, better suited to a specific clientele. $500 per night ?
Location is excellent.

I cannot remember the location or the name of the sister hotel. It is about 10 minutes walk from the Kyoto Granbell which is more expensive. The hotel is very popular with Japanese tourists and management's attitude with our issue was cavalier and business like. As we had no other choice (terminally ill family member) we forked out the extra charged. All the paper work showed we had paid for the Kyoto Granbell but management insisted this was an error and that we had been charged for the sister hotel. Lack of communication in Japanese on our side further complicated the matter.

Can't really remember, I think we used an adapter. There is a smart device already in room for taking out and about for restaurants and sites, so can probably use that charger
