As with most Super Hotels, this is a clean, comfortable hotel with a great breakfast. There is also an onsen and an evening welcome bar, which is complimentary. The location is great; five minutes to the market and 10 to Gion. You are right on Teramachi Shopping Street and there are plenty of great places to eat nearby.

We had a hard time finding this hotel at first. But after that, we realize that the location of the hotel is amazing! The easiest way to get to this hotel from Kawaramachi train station is via Takashimaya Mall exit. Once you’re in the exit, across the street you will see Zara (the Clothes shop). Beside Zara is an alley. Go to that alley and you will pass by FamilyMart, some local shops and then the hotel. 5 min walk from the Takashimaya exit. The place is perfect for shopping! The hotel is like in the middle of shopping malls and shopping streets!
Breakfast selection is not so much but the croissant and other pastries are good.
They have only 1 onsen so there are specific times of the day for men and for women. Night till morning is for Men, so I went to onsen past midnight because we were out all day & night.
You can get extra pillow (first come first served) in the lobby. The pillow is quite different as I think there are some beads inside or something. Anyways, you can also get robes from the lobby (3rd floor).
Hotel is near a bus stop going to Kyoto Station. Free Wifi. There's no closet. Only hangers and wall hooks.
Our room has double bed and a sofa. The toilet is small. Imagine those toilets in airplanes...but with shower.
Hotel provides maps and instructions on how to get to tourist spots around Kyoto.

Following tips from some of the TripAdvisors, I get a friend who read Japanese to help me book the room through the Japanese Website, it saves me loads of money as I was able to get a good rate.

The location of the hotel was superb. I did not realize it till I arrives there. It was just next to Potoncho, Nishiki and Malls and all the High Street Boutique brands such as LV, etc. It was also a short walk away from Gion. It was easy to access the Shijo Gion subway Station and Kawaramachi subway Station. Everything was just within a couple of blocks walk.

This is the first time I stayed at a Super chain hotel and the concept blew my mind. This hotel is huge, but has the least staff to run it. No door man, no restaurant nor all those labor intensive services. Instead, there is a cafeteria where vending machines serves hot and cold drinks all day long. No bar, but the vending machines provided an assorted brands for your choosing. The checkin counter does not accept cash, for cash payment, there is an ATM like machine that will accept the cash payment and provide the 6 digit room code. Yes, no room Keys, you key in your code in the keypad to enter the room and also to access the hotel at closing times (no door man).

There is an Onsen/Hot Bath next to the lobby. This was great after a long day walking and it helps to relax the body. This onsen has alternate male and female time. There are 3 computers at the cafeteria free to use and a printer, but you will have to purchase papers from the reception. There were LAN lines in the Room, but Wifi only available at the lobby.

The unique feature of this hotel is the availability of different types of pillow or different pillow hardness. You can select your pillow before you go up to your room. You can grab a pajamas there as well. Check in Early to get your choice of pillow.

2 of the 4 drinks vending machines are made free during breakfast time. The free breakfast consist of an assorted types of croissant, Inari Sushi, salads, and different types of Eggs and Meat. The eggs and meat changes in styles everyday.

I would stay back at this hotel in my next Kyoto trip.

I booked this hotel via their website and it took a while to get it finalised due to language barriers but I'm glad things worked out!
Our taxi driver (from Kyoto Station) did not know exactly where the hotel was so dropped us off at the entrance of Shin-Kyogoku shopping arcade. We asked the police "koban" where Super Hotel was. They must have been asked this many times because they had a hand-drawn map of where to find it! Basically, it's the 3rd right down Shin-Kyogoku arcade.
To enter the hotel, you take the lift from the street level. The staff were very friendly, helpful and most spoke English as well. The room itself was small and very clean, as expected. We had a non-smoking double bed room which had all the usual amenities needed like fridge, hair dryer, TV, internet line. It did get a bit noisy in the morning with people talking loudly in the corridors. The hotel had a few policies in place which I found unique but liked. Firstly, if you don't get your bedsheets changed every day, you get a free bottle of water (I thought this was great - the cleaners will still empty your rubbish, make your bed and clean the bathroom). Also, at reception, they have a wall full of pillows of different height and hardness. It's a first-come first-served policy, so we chose ours right after checking in and stuck with those. The original pillows supplied in each room are filled with hard balls, so if you like soft pillows, make sure you get one early. In addition, all females who stay get to choose 5 freebies every day (e.g. face masks, eye masks, feet coolers, shower caps, massage oil etc). The free breakfast buffet each morning ends quite early so this was an incentive to get up early. It was quite basic but enough to sustain us until lunch, and consisted of things like croissants, bread, coleslaw salad, seaweed salad, lotus root salad, mini sausages, milk/juice etc.
As for location, Kawaramachi station is right at the entrance of Shin-Kyogoku so you don't need to walk far at all, however getting around Kyoto is mostly done by bus. We found many attractions in Kyoto walkable (i.e. up to 1hr walking) so we found ourselves walking quite a bit (it was a good chance to look at Kyoto in detail). For instance, we walked to Kiyomizudera for the autumn illumination, which was amazing! Other places to go if you're short on time include Ginkakuji (breathtaking), Kinkakuji, Fushimi Inari, Nanzenji, Chionin. Nearby the hotel, there's plenty to explore including Shin-Kyogoku and Teramachi shopping arcades, Nishiki market, Pontocho alley and Shijo street (the main street).
All in all, we found the hotel comfortable and the little perks made it that bit special. The location was great. We would definitely stay again.

I stayed in transit to some work in Shizuoka city. Though tucked away behind the mains streets, it is relatively easy to get to by bus from the Kyoto central train station.

It is worth noting that this is part of a large chain of hotels in Japan, all of which are virtually identical. There is a very secure entry with a lift. The particular one at this Superhotel is also coded for night access after midnight (if you arrive after midnight, the reception can bypass the codes if you buzz them). At reception, you confirm your booking and pay your cash/credit into a big blue machine which then gives you a code on a printout. the code is for your door.

The rooms themselves are standing room only and dominated by a large reasonably comfortable bed. The room I had was very clean and quiet. The showers and amenities are all modular, somewhat cramped by Western standards but usable. TV is limited to mostly Japanese services though you can use their WiFi to stream content.

The breakfast in the morning is simple but filling with fresh little bread rolls baked on site and a selection of Japanese and Western breakfast foods.

The main attraction of this hotel chain is the price. As a no frills, clean and safe one night place to stay it is very economical. Well worth a look at if you are a bit over Ryokans.

location - hard to find. taxi can only stop at the main road and I walked 2 rounds before I finally managed to find this hotel, which is located in a small alley, by using Google map.

room - tiny. I had to put my luggage on the floor right behind the room door, which was also in front of the bathroom. I had to be very careful to not injuire myself. TV channels suck. Showed mostly Japanese programs. I only managed to catch 1 movie in English when I was in the room.

bathroom - the worst thing about this hotel is the bathroom. pathetically small!! you're almost touching the wall when you sit on the toilet bowl. there is no space to stand at the sink area when you brush your teeth. you have to go up a step to get into the bathroom and down the step when you get out, so you need to be extra careful when the place is so cramped and if the floor is wet.

the only thing I like about this hotel is the staff at the reception. very friendly and helpful. however that is not a reason good enough for me to return to this hotel if I visit Kyoto again.

oh, and do note the check-out time is early at 10am so if you're changing or in the shower at that time you'd better double-lock your room door otherwise you will receive a huge surprise!!

Reservations were done over the phone since we wanted to book 1 room for triple sharing. No down payments whatsoever. They immediately sent a confirmation number and a week prior to the booked dates, they sent another email asking for confirmation. We booked at this hotel for 2 nights and loved everything about it!

Prior to the trip, I printed out the map and directions provided by the website and showed it to the taxi driver which we took from JR Kyoto Station. It was a very near, less than 10 minute ride. Got off by the main road and walked inwards to where the hotel is, just a block away. Having a large suitcase and additional trolley didn't matter because the streets were smooth.

Upon check-in in the lobby, full payment was made and we were given a receipt with the room "key code" printed on it to punch on the numerical keypads to allow entry to the room. The codes are reset for every new guest staying for safety. Before going up to the rooms, there is a variety of pillows available for guests to choose. Although the rooms already have pillows (semi-firm by standard), some Japanese prefer more firm pillows while foreigners prefer the softer-fluffier kinds. You may find these at the pillow corner in the lobby. Bathrobes are also made available for guests use.

Surprisingly, the Super Room (for 3 persons) was very very spacious and was more than enough. It had 2 beds, 1 couch, a television, LAN cable internet access and the bathroom of course. It was of the right size for a typical Japanese hotel bathroom. Just do not expect it to be huge. Nevertheless, it was sparkling clean, complete with shampoo, conditioner, body soap, toothbrush and towels.

An "onsen" is located on the lobby floor with the hours alternating for men and women's use. The lobby floor is also where you have breakfast every morning where they serve different kinds of freshly baked breads with butter and jam, eggs, salads, soup, sausages and the best part is the vending machine for beverages is free during breakfast hours. You can choose among the different drinks available like milk, cold coffee, hot coffee, cold tea, hot tea, juices and softdrinks.

The location was very good. only a block away from the main road where shopping malls are located and the Hankyu Line. The lobby has a lot of printed brochures of the places to go and the staff is ready to handout English versions and maps of the bus stations or train stations you will need to access to get to your destination. During a rainy afternoon, they even lent us umbrellas to use which were to be returned to the front desk upon return. The place is also in a good location for roaming around in the night as it is only a few blocks away from the drinking alleys, where the nightlife is. We just went towards wherever our feet took us and found our way.

Hotel staff also kept our luggage for us for a few hours after we checked out as we still wanted to make the most of our day in Kyoto.

We had a great time at this place and would definitely come back. I highly recommend this place whether you are a solo traveler, with friends or with family and kids.

Just returned from a 2 weeks holiday in Japan including Tokyo and Kyoto. In Kyoto I stayed at the Superhotel Shijo Kawaramachi following tripadvisor reviews…

First of all, I was quite nervous about the location and how easy to find it was supposed to be… It is indeed quite easy… no need to speak Japanese or anything… From Kyoto Station, take a bus (from bus stop A2) to Kawaramachi Shijo… this is a very identifiable area… when you see the big department stores, time to get down… and then just find the OPA store and it is right behind it… if not, just walk on the small aisle between OPA and The Gap… and turn right and its like 50 metres away…

The area is quite commercial, with lots of shops, cafes, restaurants, stores and everything you need… also is quite handy for sightseeing purposes since all buses stop in the area… so from there you can take any bus you want… also is close to Gion and to the red light district and party area in Kyoto…

The service in the hotel was really good! Most of the employees don’t speak a lot of English but they compensate it with lots of attitude and spotless service! They always smile and try their best to make you feel at home! They provide you with free pajamas for your stay and you have a “pillow menu” to choose from… also there is free breakfast (pastries, bread, milk, orange juice, yogurt, salads, soup, coffee and hot cocoa to choose from) and a onsen (hot springs) onsite… the hot springs you have to try it since its amazing!

The rooms are quite small, I had the double and it was like small small, but since I was travelling alone there was not a problem… however, keep that in mind… there is a double bed and a small sofa, maybe for a small girl or child… also there is a tv and a small desk with free LAN internet, which was nice… there are also 3 free computers and they give 3 free minutes to phone some countries… the bathroom was super tiny but super efficient… the bed was rock hard and the pillows not really comfortable… however, the price is dirty cheap and the location is just perfect…

If in Kyoto again, I would certainly consider staying here again, mainly because of the location, the price and the service… the downside is definitely the size of the room (but you are not in Kyoto for spending time in the room, just for sleeping, right?) and the not so comfortable bed and pillow…

But again, the service and attitude of the staff was just remarkable!

This hotel offers a really great value option for the wonderful city of Kyoto.

Pros:
- excellent breakfast, included in the room rate with nice croissants, pastries, yoghurt, a few hot options, tea, coffee, juice, soup, rice etc.
- everything is brand new, smart, clean and tidy
- great service - the staff at the front desk were so genuinely warm, friendly and kind
- free high speed internet access

Cons:
- small, basic room - but that's what I expected, and everything is in great nick
- very firm bed - but that does seem to be typical in Japan
- very uncomfortable pillow on first night - unfortunately whilst this hotel has a great free pillow choice rack in the lobby, by the time we got back in the evening they had all gone so I was left with the pretty uncomfortable pillow from the bed.
- bedroom windows are frosted glass so you can't see the outside world

We loved the location of this hotel right by the main Shijo Dori with lots of bus stops within a two / three minute walk. Also lots of great restaurants and shops right on the door step. This hotel was behind the main street so was still quiet. We accessed the hotel by walking down a covered arcade from Shijo Dori and then turning right at KFC!!

By the way, the bus is a really excellent way to get around Kyoto. As soon as you can, get a bus map from the tourist information centre at the station and you will easily and cheapily get to any temple. Don't be put off the bus - the maps have English and on board there are clear displays and announcements which you can follow.

Also, we found a great noodle restaurant just round the corner which served awesome freshly made udon noodles with tempura at a bargain price. Great experience too...
Google Marugame Udon Noodle Restaurant for more details.

Comparing this budget hotel to those in the UK, this is a great deal. Excellent free breakfast, free internet, kettle, flatscreen TV, good amenities - particularly for women, friendly staff, hot spring baths, great location. This place is an excellent value option for Kyoto.
