This hotel exceeded our expectations. We had never been to Kyoto before and selected the Cross Hotel based on the good reviews and location. Although the hotel was celebrating its 5th birthday, you would never have known as it appeared brand new. The design and decor is extremely tasteful, the rooms while not overly large are well laid out, very clean, and have a comfortable bed, and the breakfast has many western and Asian choices. The hotel’s location is superb, being close to a large variety of restaurants, bars, and shops. Sanjo Meiten shopping arcade is minutes away and from there you can easily reach Nishiki Market, a short stroll away.
The hotel staff deserve a special mention as they were always keen to help you navigate the way to Kyoto’s various temples, gardens and other places of interest. Extra thanks to Shiori Horio who was exceptionally pleasant and helpful when I needed to book a bus trip, and also gave me a great perspective on where the hotel is located with respect to the many Kyoto landmarks.
We would definitely stay at the Cross Hotel again if we were fortunate enough to return to Kyoto.

This is definitely a hotel worth considering, with decent sized rooms in Japan, where most good accommodation is pricey and rooms generally on the small side…..

The hotel has a minimalistic exterior design and walking up to the hotel, it is obvious that it is new & modern ~ a nice little zen garden on the one corner with some lush shrubbery in the background and a little stream trickling past.

The location is good ~ walking distance to shopping malls and areas, loads of restaurants in the other direction and easily accessible via public transport.

Upon entering through the front door, a fragrant and spacious lobby awaits with friendly & courteous staff ready to help and assist with the check in process. Just beyond the reception counters there is a seating area with comfortable chairs and sofas, facing outwards and providing views of the zen garden through floor to ceiling windows ~ all this while enjoying complimentary coffees.

The ambience & atmosphere of the hotel & interiors are dark and moody, creating a sense of calm and quiet.

The rooms are not excessively big, but the interior design and layout is very effective, efficient and modern ~ every part of the rooms are used & utilized to make it is convenient & comfortable as possible.

The rooms are equipped with the standard drinking water, tea & coffee facilities, safety deposit box, toiletries and even an air purifier. The air can become a bit dry and uncomfortable during those winter nights.
One small thing I noticed and loved, is that magnets are used on the outside of the doors to indicate “Do Not Disturb” and “Please Make Up Room”.

The dining room on the ground floor is big, with a private area for groups, a bar, open kitchen counter, general seating area with raised tables and bar stools, normal tables and chairs, as well as an outside area for summer days.

The breakfast offers a good selection of hot dishes, cold dishes, meats and cheeses, fruits, cereals, juices and tea & coffee. They even have some Japanese breakfast dishes that can be ordered.

My one and only issue I have, is that the breakfast dishes are exactly the same, every day…. Same fruit, same juices, same cold meats, same cheese, same cereals. The only dish that varied was one of the hot dishes. Guests staying for a few days might become a bit bored and frustrated with the daily selection….

Apart from this ~ I thoroughly enjoyed staying at this hotel and couldn’t fault them on anything. Rooms are clean, well equipped and comfortable, staff is friendly & helpful and amenities new & modern.
Well worth staying here when exploring Kyoto!

The location is the best in the city - an easy walk to both the Gion district and the central shopping area. There are a couple of train stations within a 5 min walk and it is easy to walk with your bags to the hotel. It is a big hotel but and it was very busy but everything runs seamlessly. We had breakfast one morning and there was many different options. Our room was clean but small. We did get some noise from the close by clubs but it didn't keep us awake. My only issue was the cleaning - we'd go out early, get back late afternoon and our room hadn't been cleaned. Cleaning would turn up at 4.30pm just when we wanted to have showers/bath and relax for a bit. They do say on their papers that cleaning is until 6pm but it is just too late.

Dear travel-with-vanessa, Thank you for choosing Cross Hotel Kyoto and for sharing your recent experience with us. We are so pleased to hear that you enjoyed our central location, seamless service and varied breakfast. However, we would like to apologize that our room cleaning service did not meet your expectations. Although the cleaning is being done in order from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., we are more than happy to accommodate a request from our guests where possible should the cleaning be finished at a specific time. Thank you again for your valuable feedback and leaving us a generous review despite the inconvenience experienced due to the delayed room cleaning. My wife and I just spent two nights at the Cross Hotel in Kyoto. We had been at another hotel for two nights, and it was pretty good, but a.bkt dark and we also wanted to spend our last 2 nights more in the downtown area near the river. As we typically do, we worked our way down the top hotels on Trip Advisor, and were about to the point where we were going to extend at the hotel we were already in. At that point we happened to walk by the Cross Hotel and both noticed how nice it looked. Long story shortened.. it was fabulous. We were given a room on the top floor with a great view of the city and mountains for less than 1/2 of what we were quoted by one of the higher ranked hotels. The lesson we learned was to not bank so heavily on the top 10 ranked hotels..

This is clearly a brand new property and everything was pristine. We had a deluxe double room which was spacious by international standards, by Japanese standards, it was exceptional. A huge TV, an amazingly comfortable bed, ultra fast wifi and the bathroom - wow! Possibly the best designed bathroom we have had anywhere in the world. Would love to import one for our new house it was that good.

We have stayed in many, many hotels around the world and I am hard pressed to think of one that compares to this I; terms of te amount of thought that has gone into the design.

We expected a few teething problems which are common with newly opened places. however, the staff were universally excellent. On arrival as we were room only we were offered western breakfast at 50% of the walk in rate. A bargain at £10 considering that the deal was an amazing buffet that included all you can eat lobster and steak. Incredible quality food at an excellent price.

Cross hotel is the best hotel I have stayed not only Tokyo but in Japan. The price is really affordable even though I visited during Christmas. The staff were very professional and went above and beyond to make sure my stay was pleasant. The location is also perfect, it is in a smaller street from the main street so there is not a lot of noise at night, but very close to Nishiki Market, Potoncho, Kamo River. I have stayed at some five star hotels but this hotel quality and service is on par if not better than some of those. Definitely I will choose this place and not looking else where next time I am visiting Kyoto.

This hotel has a great location next to all the restaurants, shops and bars. The hotel is very nice and modern with very large rooms. We had breakfast included which had a large selection of western as well as Japanese offerings. Should I come back to Kyoto I would definitely stay here again. There is no iron nor ironing board in the room but a quick call to the check-in and one was brought up within 5 minutes.

The hotel's location is as good as it gets. Within a 5 minute walking distance to the train station and bus stops serving most of Kyoto. Kyoto station is a short 10 minute taxi ride away as well. The main shopping street is literally steps away with ample amounts of dining, retail and entertainment options. The hotel's pricing is appropriate for the quality of the rooms. Simple and nicely decorated rooms with all the amenities that you would require. Although offering a small spread, the breakfast buffet had high quality ingredients. The only issue we had during the stay was that one side of the hotel overlooks the adjacent bar street and there were noise issues in the room. I am quite sensitive to noise and had to sleep with ear plugs.

Dear BryanCLR, Thank you for choosing to stay with Cross Hotel Kyoto. Although we are delighted to read that you enjoyed our convenient location, well-appointed room and high-quality breakfast, we are very sorry for the noise from the street and the inconvenience this has caused. Our hotel is located in the downtown area, and while this offers an easy access to many restaurants/bars, attractions and subway/bus stations, this also makes it difficult for us to ensure perfect quietness in the room, especially during the festive season. However, we understand that unbearable noise should be addressed properly; we will continue to monitor the noise level in the surrounding area at night and work closely with the local police to ensure necessary actions can be taken quickly. Thank you again for taking the time to write us your feedback. We hope to be able to welcome you back to our hotel the next time your travel plans bring you back to Kyoto. The rooms are very comfortable. We stayed in a standard twin room. The layout was nice. The beds were not pushed together like the nearby Solaria Hotel. There's a separate sink, shower, and restroom.

Our room faced the backside of the hotel opposite the entrance. Even though we were on the 8th floor, we could hear music and people singing from the adjacent clubs and bars nearby. They were especially loud around 3-4am.

There's a nice restaurant inside the hotel, but they were closed for a private event. The event ended around 9:30pm. However, when we went to the hotel bar near 10pm, we were told they were closing.

I would stay at this hotel again, but I would request a room facing the front of the hotel (assuming it's quieter than the back side). If you prefer a quiet night sleep, then I would reccomend the Solaria Hotel.

Located in the vibrant neighborhood of Pontocho, the Cross Hotel Kyoto is an affordable bang for your buck stay when visiting Kyoto. While it may not be close to the gigantic Kyoto Station, it is within walking distance to the Gion District. The room is spacious. The bathroom is uniquely designed in that the toilet is separated from the bathing area. I must admit that the toilet room is small and confining. The staff is accommodating to a T, pleasant and all to eager to answer the needs of the hotel guest. The breakfast from 7-10 offers a wide variety of American/European style breakfast and Japanese fare. You can't go wrong when you offer steak slices cooked medium rare, buttery taste and tender. I recommend this hotel whole heartedly.

Thank you very much for choosing Cross Hotel Kyoto from among so many hotels. We are sorry to hear the toilet was too small for your needs. As you mentioned, our rooms come with a separate toilet and a bathroom which is equipped with a Japanese-style soaking tub in a wet area for added convenience, so you may feel that the toilet room is a little bit small. We will pass your comment to the management team for review and improvement of guest experience. However, we are delighted to have exceeded your expectations with a lot of points including not only our tangible aspects, but also the intangible aspects. Our restaurant “KIHARU Brasserie” offers a delicious grilled menu including chicken, bacon and sausage, as well as freshly prepared salads and fruits, egg menus along with classic Japanese menus to boost your energy. We have received positive feedback from many of our guests and it is good to see that you enjoyed it as well. Thank you again for taking the time to write us such wonderful feedback. We look forward to welcoming you back to us soon. Warm regards, Cross Hotel Kyoto

I did not experience any queue for the breakfasts at all. This will depend on whether the hotel is busy or not but I did not experience that problem. You could contact the notel and ask. I really enjoyed the breakfasts at the nice surroundings of their dining room. Hotel breakfasts are usually dearer but it is a matter of convenience and having the variety of foods available.

Yes, it is an easy 5 minute walk from the station. We used Exit 1 and walked down the road, turning right at the Solari Hotel. Following the stream, keeping it on the right, and crossing the road with the 7/11 on the left, the hotel is then just over the bridge and on the right.
