It is beautifully wabi-sabi (google it) decorated small place in very convenient location-5-7 min walk to the restaurants, train and bus stops. Close (10-15 min walk) to some "must see in Kyoto" temples. What makes it great is the people working there. Friendly, very helpful and knowledgeable. While one person gives you direction to some temple second already printed it...

I was planning our first trip to Kyoto and of course the Mume was booked for our dates. I sent an email asking them if they could contact me if they had a cancellation and two weeks prior to our trip it was my lucky day. My daughter and I stayed in the Butterfly room, which was fantastic. The service,...

It was our second stay at Mume, and, unbelievably it surpassed the first! Mume has an ideal location hidden within the cherry blossoms and Fall colours of Gion. The decor and the rooms have a unique blend of antiques and modernism. Perhaps the most outstanding feature is the staff and the services they provide. No detail, no task, direction, or...

With just eight rooms, Hotel Mume is something of a cross between a boutique hotel and a B&B but, whatever label might be affixed, it is a very special place. Kyoto was our first stop on our first visit to Japan. We're experienced independent travelers but we were a bit apprehensive about going solo in a country with a significant...

The staff at Hotel Mume are the nicest people I've met and their service is absolutely impeccable - from the moment of booking (despite that I requested a million changes) all the way through til the stay, their attention to detail superseded all my expectations. They were always there to help out during my trip in japan, even though I...

Definately one of the best boutique hotel we've ever stayed . Brilliant location in the Gion area. Plenty to see within walking distance from lovely temples to traditional wooden houses and shopping . Should you need to take a bus, the bus stop is just a few minutes walk away. Not to mention plenty of restaurants for you to choose...

Hotel Mume is an absolutely wonderful place to stay in Kyoto. The service provided by the staff in this hotel is the best I have ever received. Nothing is too much trouble from suggesting restaurants to making a very welcome pot of tea after a day of tiring sightseeing. They even assisted with train times, printed off maps and on...

It was wihout a doubt, my best experience in a hotel. I am sure that I will never stay in a similar hotel in my whole life. We booked the Flower Suite, I cannot describe how amazing the room was. Absolutely perfect. I will live there for the rest of my life. The staff was incredibly nice. I have NEVER...

There's not much I can say that hasn't already been said about what a wonderful place Hotel Mume is. We stayed for 2 nights because that was all that was available (book early- like way earlier than you think you should) but would have loved to have stayed for our entire time in Kyoto. We stayed in the Moon room...

We stayed here for 2 nights and it was a wonderful stay. The staff are the most friendliest and helpful that I have ever come across in all the hotels I have ever stayed. Breakfast was continental style and tea and coffee could be had at any time of the day or night without cost. Happy hour is from 17.00-19.00...

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
