I stayed at Mume again after several years away. It is still as wonderful as I remember. The rooms are so beautifully decorated, with great facilities, and the location is perfect; about 5 minutes walk from Gion.

But the thing that sets this hotel head and shoulders above other hotels is the level of service. I have been fortunate to stay in some top class hotels over the years but the service at Mume is second to none. The staff go out of their way to make sure you have everything you need including wonderful suggestions for dinner and drinks.

I know there are travel restrictions at the moment to enter Japan but if you are lucky enough to be in Japan already take advantage of the quieter situation in Kyoto and spend some time at Mume. You’ll have a fantastic time. I know I’m going back again soon.

Hotel Mume is our favorite hotel in the world. The warm and gracious manager, Hisako-san, and her kind staff make us feel truly welcomed, and at home. They think of everything that adds to a guest’s comfort and enjoyment. The location of this small hotel is just right. It’s on a quiet street on the edge of Gion, a pretty and historic area. The rooms are not only super comfortable but exquisitely decorated with the most beautiful antiques and handmade decorative papers. The included breakfast is scrumptious and includes freshly baked rolls and three different homemade jams every day, fresh fruit and juice, yogurt, soup and egg. The hotel is a calm, beautiful oasis. We always feel both pampered, and as though we are amongst our favorite friends and family. Hotel Mume is not just a hotel to stay in, it is a hotel to love.

We have never stayed at a place that was more hospitable than Hotel Mume. Every review about this place is true: the friendly staff, lovely rooms and common areas, amazing food, and great location were all spot on. We had some of the best dinners of our lives thanks to their suggestions and reservations made for us. Breakfasts were homemade with different soup, breads, jam and fruit every morning. Location was on a quiet Gion side street that made it easy to walk everywhere but very quiet and peaceful at night to sleep. But the staff are what made it truly special. Our stay was impacted by Typhoon Lan and they were more than accommodating with our altered plans, even greeting us late at night when we finally arrived with homemade shaved ice (which they continued to make for us every night of the rest of our stay as a late night treat!). They packed up breakfast for us two days when we weren’t going to be able to eat in, and showed us directions to anywhere we needed to go for each day. They truly took the time to get to know their guests and were some of the nicest people we’ve ever met. Absolutely fantastic experience and we will be back and recommending this little gem to everyone we know!

Outstanding service. Really looks after you. Understands (and remembers) your needs. Will recommend and make reservations at the best restaurants or at typical lower cost places if you want a break from fine dining and local culture. Strongly recommend for independent travelers new to Kyoto, but many return visitors. Thankful to be able to return post-pandemic, for our 7th visit.

I will be completely transparent here folks. I am 100% biased. It was our (with Wife) 5th trip to Japan from Australia since 2010 (?), and our 4th time at Mume. It has become our home away from home in Kyoto.

Our affection for Mume and its Owner Hisako doubles each time we go. We consider Hisako and the wonderful Nana (2nd in charge) to be firm friends, and we would welcome them into our home, should they ever visit Australia.

Mume is so much more than a place to sleep. It is place to unwind after a long day strolling around the many sites of Kyoto.

The Mume 'Happy Hour' is legendary. Unlike other larger Hotels, where you are literally 'just a number', Hisako, Nana and the entire support staff make you feel like Mume is an extension of your own home.

Happy Hour is a time to relax, have a drink and a chance to sit with other guests and actually converse about your respective Kyoto adventures. The lounge area makes for a cozy atmosphere that encourages shared experiences and laughter.

People who have visited Mume, initially come for the Bed. Now those guests return for the genuine kindness and empathy shown by Hisako and her staff. As I tell all newcomers to Mume, be prepared to let yourself be smothered with affection and good-will.

Mume is so much more than a Hotel. It is an experience that will enrich your stay in Kyoto. Hisako and Nana will help you eat like the locals and take all the stress out of finding somewhere to eat.

They will match your budget to your needs. Whether it be cheap, medium or more than medium, they will recommend a great place to dine. They will sort the reservation and provide you with a detailed map of how to find the location. It is all part of their great service.

If you a visiting Kyoto, please give Mume a chance. I want Mume and Hisako to survive and prosper because genuinely good people deserve to have good things happen to them in life.

See you soon Hisako and Nana. Much love. xxxxx

Regards Paul and Caz

We had a fantastic stay at Hotel Mume and would highly recommend to others. The hotel has beautiful rooms and bar, the breakfasts were delicious and the service from the hotel Mume team was fantastic. They went well out their way to ensure we had a fantastic stay in the city with recommendations and restaurant bookings and even helped us book a difficult to book restaurant in Tokyo for the next leg of our trip. We would definitely stay again if returning to Kyoto.

It would only be selfish if I kept this gem of a hotel to myself. I visited here in March with my husband and I cannot reccomend Mume enough. Hisako has created a truly special experience in her hotel. Her staff and the overall service was better than some 5 star resorts.

I reserved the Sakura room which is beautiful by design and really comfortable to sleep in. The area was very quiet and peaceful at night, and while March can be chilly the room had good heating features.

During the run up and including my stay Nana and Hikaru were very helpful both by email to reply to queries and helping to book restaurants and organise luggage delivery service. The breakfast was really pleasant and filling each morning and the breakfast time as well as check out time are very generous and flexible.

The hotel also runs a happy hour in the evening and it was a great way to decompress after the day and also get to know some of the other guests. It was a very intimate environment. The location was fantastic and very easily accessible by local bus, train and taxi. The immediate area is also close to some key tourist attractions and restaurants so it was easy to head out both by day and night on foot to experience the local atmosphere. It is a spot I will be sure to visit again. Thanks so much to Hisako as the host and her lovely team.

A lovely boutique hotel. The bedrooms were comfortable with plenty of amenities. The breakfast room which is also a day room, was intimate but well decorated and an enjoyable place to hang out, especially during the complimentary evening cocktail hour. Breakfasts are very hearty and will keep you going throughout the day. Every day some of the breakfast courses changed and it was always exciting waiting to see what treats would be brought to the table.

The staff are delightful and can never do enough for you. Truly excellent service - always with a smile.

The location of the hotel is great and within walking distance to the key spots in Kyoto. And after a busy day of exploring, you'll feel a sense of relief as you see the red entrance door to this lovely cozy hotel.

We had a great three-night stay at Hotel Mume. My mom was unfortunately ill for much of our time in Kyoto, but the staff at Hotel Mume was kind and accommodating in making sure she was doing okay. The location is about as good as you can get in Kyoto, in the heart of Gion and alongside a canal where the cherry blossoms had just started to bloom. (I recommend a room overlooking the canal, but even if one isn't available, there's still a great view of it from the dining room.) So many of the top sites in Kyoto are within walking distance, and the atmosphere in the neighborhood is just magical in the evening. I would definitely stay here again when back in Kyoto.

If you want a true taste of Japanese hospitality, extreme kindness, comfortable accommodation, delicious breakfasts, great location and personal attention, then MUME is the place for you. Despite the stress, staff shortage and financial hardship that the most gracious hotel owner (Hisako) has suffered during Covid, the level of care, attention and service have remained the best that we have experienced in all of our numerous travel experiences. We have stayed at Mume several times and our stays there have never been short of just being wonderful every single time. We can't recommend any other hotel more than Mume. If you try it, you will not be disappointed. The level of care and service is absolutely outstanding! We just can't wait to return!

The breakfast isn't one that is sitting out, instead ten minutes prior to you wanting it served you call down and they bring it out hot. Each morning is fresh fruit cup, soup, breads and homemade jams, hard boiled egg, and choice of juice and coffee/tea. The service I believe started at 7 a.m..
