Hotel is beautiful. About a ten minute walk from Kyoto Station (make sure you walk out the JR side - it's the modern side of the Station with the department store). And about a 10-15 minute walk to the downtown area. The staff are very friendly.

We were looking for a Ryokan-styled property but with all the modern amenities. Kanra hotel definitely satisfied this for us. The hotel is beautifully designed, very new and very clean. The room was huge for Japanese standards. The bed was enormous and super comfortable. The bathroom had a big cedar-wood tub. Most importantly for me, their shower had good water... More

First of all the location is around the central station, but enough far to walk with the luggage and to close for the taxis to take you. The room and the lobby have a very nice modern Japanese design, but the service needs improvement. There is no room service(maximum if you insist they will bring you a coffe in the... More

We stayed here 2 nights last weekend to explore Kyoto foliage. Hotel is 2 minutes walk from subway, and 10 minutes from Kyoto train station. Staffs speak well English, friendly and offer assistance. There's also bus stop not far away from hotel. Location wise, it's great. Our room is on Annex building which connect from main building. Room is New... More

We were looking for a hotel that was Japanese style, but modern and a touch special - this was perfect. The location is very close to the Kyoto station, which is convenient for arriving and for visiting some of the sites. We would have preferred being slightly further up town, but public transport is very easy and it's within a... More

After staying at "chain" hotels in other Japanese cities we were keen on something different for Kyoto and the Kanra absolutely fit the bill. Well designed, large and beautiful rooms with an amazing shower. Staff were impeccably friendly and helpful - you will not be unhappy staying here. A few things to know though. 1.It seems close to the station... More

This hotel is absolutely wonderful. The customer service is fantastic--the entire front desk staff stands up to greet you when you walk in the door. They provide a hot towel and cup of green tea while you are checking in. There is a lovely bar/coffee counter in the front as well. The room is impeccable and beautifully designed. It has... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
