We stayed here as part of our new years trip and had a lovely experience. The staff is super friendly and helpful and the premises have a really nice charm with rooms that strongly references a rich heritage.
It’s situated one stop away between the main JR station and the part of town with great food and shops when using the north-south subway which has a station close by.
The temple grounds next door are frequently overlooked as they are not deemed a heritage site (yet) but well worth a visit. We discovered a lovely view upon it behind the screens right from our room.
I highly recommend this hotel.

This should really be at the top of your list for places to stay in Kyoto. It's very central: just a ten minute stroll, or one train stop from Kyoto station. Right next to the impressive Higashi-Honganj Temple. There's a bus stop, convenience store, and metro station all within about a 2 minute walk from the front door. Then there is the hotel itself. A very clean minimal Japanese esthetic but still warm and inviting. The rooms have their own semiprivate entrance with a small rock garden outside and are spacious. The bathroom is a true retreat with a large steam shower room and an amazing wooden bath tub. Side note: our room had an oval-shaped tub which was the prefect size and shape for a long relaxing soak, but our friends had one that was round and said it was a bit too short to really stretch out your legs if you are on the taller side (5"11"+). In any case, if I can figure out how to put one of those wooden baths in my home and not need an army of housekeepers to maintain it, I'm getting one. The bed was so comfortable, maybe a little low if you have bad knees or aren't flexible, but perfect for us. The lobby, gift shop, cafe and restaurants are all tastefully done and, and the service is great. In other words a wonderful all around experience and the only place I will be looking at booking for my next trip to Kyoto.

We stayed at the Kanra with our two kids and the room and service were perfect. The service was amazing and the attention to detail was great. The room was big enough to accommodate a family of four (one teenager) in all 1 room which is a rarity in Japan. The modern room matched the pictures and the lobby and breakfast were great too. One day my son was sick and couldn’t make breakfast so they sent up a plate of bread/croissants for him. So nice!

We recently stayed at Kanra Hotel in Kyoto from Jan 6th - 10th. We had a wonderful time and highly recommend this hotel if your staying in Kyoto.

Location is excellent, it is a 15 min walk from Kyoto Station. Gojo station is right next door making the subway system close and easily accessible. Nishiki Market is a 20 minute walk from hotel while Chion-in and Kiyomizu-dera is about a 45 minute walk. On a nice day these are quite pleasant walks.

The staff is extremely friendly and accommodating. They took care of making lunch/dinner reservations for us as well as upgrading us to a larger room.

The room was clean and super comfortable. The wooden bath was a highlight.

The hotel has a wonderful cafe in the lobby that is good for a quick bite or a coffee.
Teppan Hanaroku is an excellent restaurant at the hotel.

Excellent place to stay if in Kyoto.

We spent a week and had a great time. Room was spacious, modern but with nice Japanese touches like the tatami area, wooden bathtub and a very big bed (2 queen sized beds joined together) plus a sitting area (even after adding an additional fur on for our daughter). Breakfasts were good (with Japanese/Western options) and the Kanra Kitchen served up great pizzas and pastas (the four cheese with honey was a real hit with us). Very well located for subway and trains. Would stay here again.

We are local residents of Kyoto and we were looking for a "stay-cation" place to spend our daughter's 2nd birthday and the Hotel Kanra was incredible. We have travelled all across Japan and have stayed at a variety of hotels, traditional inns and resorts. The Kanra is a nice blend of the comfort of a western hotel with the traditional touches of a Japanese inn. First, it is in a great location, just 10 mins walk from Kyoto station and next to a beautiful temple. The restaurant offered delicious food that we enjoyed for both lunch and breakfast. The rooms are amazing with all the little details to make you really feel like you are in Kyoto too. Even the entrances to the rooms have a beautiful little sand and moss garden to greet you. The beds are super soft and the sinker tub made of cedar is super cool too. The main thing I liked about the stay was the service. They went out of their way to help make our daughter's day special and the service was top quality. I recommend everyone to book this hotel for their stay in Kyoto!

In kanra you can enjoy a luxurious traditional japanese style. The room is japanese style, decoration was amazing. We like the room so much :) the location is very near with gojo station. The staffs all very nice and helpful. They provided us the special welcome, with honeymoon notes and matcha premium chocolate. This very thoughtful. We chose breakfast option and very sophisticated breakfast.

However Our room has noise problem, 1 night from the AC and because have lots of wood, sometimes have cracking sound from the woods due to temperature difference. Hope they can improve this problem in future

We had three days in Kanra. The rooms are indeed strongly traditional with Tatami mats and wooden floors and screens. In our bathroom he had both Square and round baths made of wood (cycad) which were beautiful if a little impractical (the round one took the best part of 45 minutes to fill). The shower was good and double sinks made the bathroom usable for a family. There was an elevated tatami area in our suite (511) which was pretty but useless owning to no furniture suites to westerners being in there. We considered moving our mattress there are the suite room had twin beds pushed together which was less than ideal when sharing with a kid. The TV came with an Amazon Firestick so our daughter was able to get only Netflix and Prime. The fridge was stocked with complementary water and sake daily: nice touch. We were in the main building (not annex) and so were on the main road. Decent curtains eliminated the road noise but these are hidden behind the traditional wooden screens. Breakfast was an odd affair, with lots of food but little to eat. I’d recommend the hotel undertake a review of what guests would prefer to eat. Seriously there was loads of stuff, but it is a bit of a struggle to find something to eat. On balance we did enjoy our time here. Some small improvements would make it a great place.

Hotel Kanra is the best hotel in Kyoto for discerning travelers looking for comfort, style, and character in their accommodation. Our first impression was intrigued the moment we arrived to Hotel Kanra. The beautiful Zen garden immediately put you into a Kyoto state of mind, followed by the welcoming smiles & gracious staff upon checking in. The best parts of our room was our mini zen garden in our private foyer, the stylish traditional Japanese furnishings featuring "raku" platform bed, cedar ofuro bathtub. In addition to the many offerings such as luxury skin & body care products, in house curated gift shops, & amazing spa. It was the amazing staff that goes up and above to assist you in every aspect of your travels & stay here. As a seasoned traveler who works in the high end luxury spa industry before retirement, i highly recommend Hotel Kanra Kyoto for your authentic experience in Kyoto. We will be back !

This is a beautiful hotel very conveniently located in walking distance to the Kyoto train station. Our room was very large with a huge bathroom (double sinks and gigantic bathtub) and nice seating area outside the bedroom area. The staff was extremely helpful with any questions or suggestions. They all speak English well which helped us. There is coffee available in the lobby. While there are restaurants onsite we didn’t eat there so I can’t comment. It would be nice if they had a bar. The hotel was in walking distance from 3 of our favorite dining experiences in Kyoto - Ginjo-Ramen Kubota (ramen shop), Kashin (Kaiseki) and Kura Kura (Izakaya).

We found it convenient to all the things we wanted to do in Kyoto - it is a block from a subway line and we used taxis, which were plentiful right outside the hotel, and uber to get to places at a distance. We are walkers so had no trouble strolling after dinner back if we were in a bit a field and it is safe day and night. The train station is about a 15 minute walk. We loved the hotel and not being in a purely touristy area.

We stayed in a Twin Annexe room (annexe is the original building) Two beds were enormous, side by side with little/no gap. We both slept in one, easily a large double size. So depending on your teens you may not even need a futon, but that would be set up in the tatami seating area at one end of the room. Plenty of space! Hotel website states bed sizes as 1300-1400mm width
