Nazuna Kyoto Tsubaki St., a luxury ryokan renovated from an entire L-shaped alleyway of machiya (traditional Japanese townhouses) spanning 1,400 sqm, built over 110 years ago. The reception building on an unassuming street serves as both an entrance to welcome guests, as well as a passage from the outside world into Tsubaki St. On the other side, guests are greeted by an otherworldly, nostalgic street view – a world reminiscent of the historical geisha districts of Kyoto known as Hanamachi. At dusk, guests can experience the luster of Tsubaki St. as the chochin (Japanese paper lanterns) and oki-andon (Japanese paper lamps) illuminate the stone-cobbled path. The 23 machiya lining the street have transformed into 23 individual guest rooms with a private semi open-air bath, named and decorated according to elements of nature that have long been cherished in Kyoto: TAKE (bamboo), MIZU (water), IWA (stone), HANA (flower), and HA (leaf). The 9 twin rooms of TAKE and MIZU feature a first-floor living room alongside a space with a semi open-air bath, and a second-floor bedroom. The 14 deluxe rooms of IWA, HANA, and HA feature a first-floor bedroom alongside a space with a semi open-air bath, and a second-floor tatami area where futons can be used for additional guests. Throughout each room, guests can enjoy the unique décor and interior design inspired by each of the five elements.

My wife and I were excited and held high expectations prior to arriving at the hotel due to its price point, and yet the hotel and staff still managed to exceed our expectations. The room, lobby and amenities were all great and made you feel like you could experience Kyoto on your own private street away from crowded "Kyoto".

The staff were exceptional in helping to create a great experience as well - we booked the private tea experience, as well as the dinner at their Bungo restaurant and we had a very enjoyable time. Special mention to Aki who had went out of her way to help create a very memorable and special stay for us! :)

Location is very easy to find, it’s a short walk from the train station. Greeted with smiles, welcome tea, and sweets. While being escorted to royakan, our host offered to take our photo in the middle of the ground, and I’m so glad she did. This place looks amazing. It’s like a private piece of Kyoto all to yourself. We got the bamboo room & it looks so cool! Our bedroom was on the second floor, which is separate from the bathroom. So if you’re unsure about climbing steep stairs, I would suggest to get the rooms with the bedroom on the first floor. The bathroom was well stocked, even included pj, face wash, and face moisturizer, they thought about everything. We opt in and got the whole dinner/breakfast package. Wagyu dinner was delicious, somewhat theatrical, and I loved it & they accommodated my boyfriend’s allergies & preference for a western breakfast instead of Japanese style. I had a special request for an anniversary setup while we were away & they did not disappoint. This was my first experience with royakan so unsure the pricing for other establishments, but I would book this place again. Oh and also the drinks, even the alcoholic drinks in the mini bar are included and freely to drink. Not only that but also offer a late night snack, an egg sando which is hand delivered in the late evening.

We had a wonderful stay. The rooms have all you need, including traditional seating area, very comfortable bed, great shower, and awesome semi-outdoor hotbath for which they provide mineral salts. Staff speak excellent English and accommodate everything you need.

We stayed two nights. The staff were very kind and catered very well to our needs. They spoke both Japanese and English. The hotel was a small L shaped street of cute mini Japanese style townhouses. The rooms were 2 floors. Our room had a king sized bed, washroom equipped with a large shower and open air private onsen on the first floor. The second floor was for entertainment with a tatami area that you can have tea at. There are also a small western style coffee table and chairs, along with a tv and drink area. To our surprise there was also a fridge full of free drinks, a scent diffuser souvenir, and late night free egg sandwiches that get delivered to the rooms. We also enjoyed the dinner at the hotel restaurant where they served an exquisite 11 course meal.

Located around 10 minutes from Kyoto station, it was a pleasure to stay at this ryokan. The rooms are clean and modern, and the private open-air bath was very relaxing. The mini ‘street’ is very photo-worthy. Ryokan has its own restaurant where you can choose to have a full course dinner and/or breakfast too. The staff are really friendly and helpful!

Fabulous! Wonderful hideaway in Kyoto. Lovely staff, beautiful room and the onsen was such a treat. A perfect break during our 2 weeks in Japan. We travelled with our two college aged sones and had two equally amazing rooms. You will be welcomed with tea and cookies, or wine if you prefer. The staff are lovely. Dinner at Bungo on the property is worth the added expense. We had a fabulous server, who made the experience even better. We requested that the beef be cooked, and it was no problem.

The cons are that the location is not close to anything. The rooms are not good for older people and anyone with mobility issues. Neither of these were an issue for us. However, upon checkout we requested a taxi to take us to our the hotel we were staying in for the duration of our time in Kyoto. It was pouring (literally a typhoon). The staff member at the desk told us it would be 30-45 minutes because of the rain. After an hour we inquired about where the taxi was and were told that he did not call because it is so hard to get a cab in a storm, and that if he did call it would be another 45 minutes We ended up having to walk in a storm. (As an aside, the next hotel requested a taxi for us to go to a museum and it arrived within 10 minutes). I'm not sure if this was a language issue or just bad service.

I still highly recommend the Nazuna as it was an overall amazing experience, and we considered walking through the typhoon part of the adventure. We would definitely return.

Nazuna is even more beautiful in person than in photos. And to make the stay feel even more special, the staff’s hospitality is better than many five star hotels in the United States.

We were welcomed with tea, sweets, and an essential oil diffuser upon arrival. They also stocked the mini fridge with complementary wine, beer, and nonalcoholic drinks.

The traditional Japanese breakfast, ochazuke, was tasty and the perfect amount of food for the first meal of the day. They also offer a western style breakfast.

The semi-open private bath was the perfect way to end a long day of sightseeing and walking. No need to worry the rain, since the bath is covered.

I would gladly stay at Nazuna again.

This is the most beautiful ryokan my husband and I have ever been to. The private onsen makes for a very secluded and serene experience, so much so that we bathed before and after dinner. The set wagyu menu at the restaurant on the premises was amazing from start to finish. The staff here are all so very helpful, and made our experience that much better. Couldn't recommend this place more! We hope to be back.

Thank you for sharing your feedback on your stay at Nauzna Kyoto Tsubakidori. At the Wagyu ryotei bungo restaurant in Tsubakidori, guests can enjoy Oita Prefecture's Bungo Wagyu beef on an all-serve basis. The staff will explain the parts of the beef and suggest how to eat them right in front of you, and depending on what you want, will even demonstrate how the beef is cooked and served. The restaurant satisfies customers from both the visual and the gustatory point of view. We look forward to seeing you again. Nazuna Kyoto Tsubaki St.

What can I say but wow!! From the moment you step into Nazuna Kyoto Tsubaki St, you are welcomed into another world.

You are greeted by staff with a lovely green tea and local Japanese snack which is delicious.

From then on you step into a private oasis which is tsubaki st, which is reminiscent of Kyoto’s roots and provides a gateway into traditional ryokan style living

From here your room is introduced to you which is stunning and every aspect is well planned to your entry hallway which provides a sneak peak to the open air bath to the most spacious bedroom I have ever had the pleasure of encountering in Japan.

And it doesn’t stop there, we were fortunate enough to dine at Bungo with the waygu degustation which was a triumph in local produce and classic Japanese dining. Our waiter explained every dishes origins to us with details on how to eat which made the experience even more enjoyable.

All guesses have access to lounge word the main Lobby which has delicious snacks and refreshments which is needed after a long day of exploring Kyoto.

We were also celebrating our wedding anniversary and the hotel made it all the more special.

I loved my stay here and am counting the days I can come back.

The staff is very friendly and accomodating. The rooms are lovely, my favourite is the private onsen. My friends and I had a great time hanging out and chatting in our rooms. The private onsen was perfect for soaking our tired feet from traveling and walking around all day. The breakfast was really good too.
